āTayome, bhikkhave, puttÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āThese three kinds of children are found in the world.
Katame tayo? What three?
AtijÄto, anujÄto, avajÄtoti. One who betters their birth, one who equals their birth, one who fails their birth.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, putto atijÄto hoti? And how does a child better their birth?
Idha, bhikkhave, puttassa mÄtÄpitaro hontiāItās when a childās parents
na buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, na dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ, na saį¹
ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatÄ; have not gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹
gha.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āAtijÄtaį¹ anujÄtaį¹, āThe astute wish for a child
puttamicchanti paį¹įøitÄ; who betters or equals their birth;
AvajÄtaį¹ na icchanti, not one who fails their birth,
yo hoti kulagandhano. disgracing their family.
Ete kho puttÄ lokasmiį¹, These are the children in the world
ye bhavanti upÄsakÄ; who become lay devotees;
SaddhÄ sÄ«lena sampannÄ, faithful, accomplished in ethics,
vadaĆ±Ć±Å« vÄ«tamaccharÄ; bountiful, rid of stinginess.
Cando abbhaghanÄ mutto, Like the moon freed from clouds,
parisÄsu virocareāti. they shine in the assemblies.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
