Puttasutta A Child

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, puttā santo saį¹vijjamānā lokasmiį¹. ā€œThese three kinds of children are found in the world.

Katame tayo? What three?

Atijāto, anujāto, avajātoti. One who betters their birth, one who equals their birth, one who fails their birth.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, putto atijāto hoti? And how does a child better their birth?

Idha, bhikkhave, puttassa mātāpitaro hontiā€”Itā€™s when a childā€™s parents

na buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatā, na dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatā, na saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatā; have not gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha.

pāį¹‡Ätipātā appaį¹­iviratā, adinnādānā appaį¹­iviratā, kāmesumicchācārā appaį¹­iviratā, musāvādā appaį¹­iviratā, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā appaį¹­iviratā, dussÄ«lā pāpadhammā. They kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, and consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Theyā€™re immoral, of bad character.

Putto ca nesaį¹ hotiā€”But their child

buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato, dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato, saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato; has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha.

pāį¹‡Ätipātā paį¹­ivirato, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato, sÄ«lavā kalyāį¹‡adhammo. They donā€™t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Theyā€™re ethical, of good character.

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œAtijātaį¹ anujātaį¹, ā€œThe astute wish for a child

puttamicchanti paį¹‡įøitā; who betters or equals their birth;

Avajātaį¹ na icchanti, not one who fails their birth,

yo hoti kulagandhano. disgracing their family.

Ete kho puttā lokasmiį¹, These are the children in the world

ye bhavanti upāsakā; who become lay devotees;

Saddhā sīlena sampannā, faithful, accomplished in ethics,

vadaĆ±Ć±Å« vÄ«tamaccharā; bountiful, rid of stinginess.

Cando abbhaghanā mutto, Like the moon freed from clouds,

parisāsu virocareā€ti. they shine in the assemblies.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
