Dhātusosaį¹sandanasutta Converging Elements

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDhātuso, bhikkhave, sattā sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samenti. ā€œMendicants, sentient beings come together and converge because of an element:

HÄ«nādhimuttikā sattā hÄ«nādhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samenti, Those who have bad convictions come together and converge with those who have bad convictions.

kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikā sattā kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samenti. Those who have good convictions come together and converge with those who have good convictions.

AtÄ«tampi, bhikkhave, addhānaį¹ dhātusova sattā sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandiį¹su samiį¹su. In the past ā€¦

HÄ«nādhimuttikā sattā hÄ«nādhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandiį¹su samiį¹su,

kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikā sattā kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandiį¹su samiį¹su.

Anāgatampi, bhikkhave, addhānaį¹ dhātusova sattā sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandissanti samessanti. In the future ā€¦

HÄ«nādhimuttikā sattā hÄ«nādhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandissanti samessanti,

kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikā sattā kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandissanti samessanti.

Etarahipi, bhikkhave, paccuppannaį¹ addhānaį¹ dhātusova sattā sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samenti. At present, too, sentient beings come together and converge because of an element.

HÄ«nādhimuttikā sattā hÄ«nādhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samenti, Those who have bad convictions come together and converge with those who have bad convictions.

kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikā sattā kalyāį¹‡Ädhimuttikehi sattehi saddhiį¹ saį¹sandanti samentÄ«ā€ti. Those who have good convictions come together and converge with those who have good convictions.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSaį¹saggā vanatho jāto, ā€œSocializing promotes entanglements;

asaį¹saggena chijjati; theyā€™re cut off by being aloof.

Parittaį¹ dārumāruyha, If youā€™re lost in the middle of a great sea,

yathā sÄ«de mahaį¹‡į¹‡ave. and you clamber up on a little log, youā€™ll sink.

Evaį¹ kusÄ«tamāgamma, So too, a person who lives well

sādhujīvīpi sīdati; sinks by relying on a lazy person.

Tasmā taį¹ parivajjeyya, Hence you should avoid such

kusÄ«taį¹ hÄ«navÄ«riyaį¹. a lazy person who lacks energy.

Pavivittehi ariyehi, Dwell with the noble ones

pahitattehi jhāyibhi; who are secluded and determined

Niccaį¹ āraddhaviriyehi, constantly energetic,

paį¹‡įøitehi sahāvaseā€ti. the astute who practice absorption.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
