VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āDiį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ. āIāve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ asakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ. Iāve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena ca asakkÄrena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ. Iāve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Taį¹ kho panÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, nÄƱƱassa samaį¹assa vÄ brÄhmaį¹assa vÄ sutvÄ vadÄmi; Now, I donāt say this because Iāve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.
(ā¦) api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva me sÄmaį¹ ƱÄtaį¹ sÄmaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sÄmaį¹ viditaį¹ tamevÄhaį¹ vadÄmi. I only say it because Iāve known, seen, and realized it for myself.ā
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ asakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena ca asakkÄrena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄāti.
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYassa sakkariyamÄnassa, āWhether theyāre honored
asakkÄrena cÅ«bhayaį¹; or not honored, or both,
SamÄdhi na vikampati, their immersion doesnāt waver
appamÄdavihÄrino. as they live diligently.
Taį¹ jhÄyinaį¹ sÄtatikaį¹, They persistently practice absorption
sukhumadiį¹į¹hivipassakaį¹; with subtle view and discernment.
UpÄdÄnakkhayÄrÄmaį¹, Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,
Ähu sappuriso itÄ«āti. theyāre said to be a true person.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
Dutiyaį¹.
