Tikanipāta The Book of the Threes

Catutthavagga Chapter Four

Sakkārasutta Esteem

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDiį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. ā€œIā€™ve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. Iā€™ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. Iā€™ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

Taį¹ kho panāhaį¹, bhikkhave, nāƱƱassa samaį¹‡assa vā brāhmaį¹‡assa vā sutvā vadāmi; Now, I donā€™t say this because Iā€™ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.

(ā€¦) api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva me sāmaį¹ Ʊātaį¹ sāmaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sāmaį¹ viditaį¹ tamevāhaį¹ vadāmi. I only say it because Iā€™ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.ā€

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā.

Diį¹į¹hā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannāā€ti.

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYassa sakkariyamānassa, ā€œWhether theyā€™re honored

asakkārena cÅ«bhayaį¹; or not honored, or both,

Samādhi na vikampati, their immersion doesnā€™t waver

appamādavihārino. as they live diligently.

Taį¹ jhāyinaį¹ sātatikaį¹, They persistently practice absorption

sukhumadiį¹į¹hivipassakaį¹; with subtle view and discernment.

Upādānakkhayārāmaį¹, Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,

āhu sappuriso itÄ«ā€ti. theyā€™re said to be a true person.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Dutiyaį¹.
