Bahujanahitasutta For the Welfare of the People
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āTayome puggalÄ loke uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. āThese three people, mendicants, arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.
Katame tayo? What three?
Idha, bhikkhave, tathÄgato loke uppajjati arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄ. Itās when a Realized One arises in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.
So dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. He proclaims a teaching that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And he reveals a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo puggalo loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. This is the first person who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tasseva satthu sÄvako arahaį¹ hoti khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto. Furthermore, itās when a mendicant is a perfected one, with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment.
So dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. They teach Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And they reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo puggalo loke uppajjamÄno uppajjati bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹. This is the second person who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, tasseva satthu sÄvako sekho hoti pÄį¹ipado bahussuto sÄ«lavatÅ«papanno. Furthermore, itās when a disciple of that Teacher is a trainee, a learned practitioner with precepts and observances intact.
Sopi dhammaį¹ deseti ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄseti. This is the third person who arises in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalÄ loke uppajjamÄnÄ uppajjanti bahujanahitÄya bahujanasukhÄya lokÄnukampÄya atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnanāti. These are the three people who arise in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSatthÄ hi loke paį¹hamo mahesi, āThe Teacher is the first, the great seer,
Tassanvayo sÄvako bhÄvitatto; following whom is the evolved disciple,
AthÄparo pÄį¹ipadopi sekho, and then a trainee, a practitioner,
Bahussuto sīlavatūpapanno. learned, with precepts and observances intact.
Ete tayo devamanussaseį¹į¹hÄ, These three are first among gods and humans,
Pabhaį¹
karÄ dhammamudÄ«rayantÄ; beacons proclaiming the teaching!
ApÄpuranti amatassa dvÄraį¹, They fling open the door to freedom from death,
YogÄ pamocenti bahujjanaį¹ te. freeing many from yokes.
Ye satthavÄhena anuttarena, Following the path so well taught
Sudesitaį¹ maggamanukkamanti; by the unsurpassed caravan leader,
Idheva dukkhassa karonti antaį¹, those who are diligent in the Holy Oneās teaching
Ye appamattÄ sugatassa sÄsaneāti. make an end of suffering in this very life.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
