Saį¹…ghāį¹­ikaį¹‡į¹‡asutta The Corner of the Cloak

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œSaį¹…ghāį¹­ikaį¹‡į¹‡e cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu gahetvā piį¹­į¹­hito piį¹­į¹­hito anubandho assa pāde pādaį¹ nikkhipanto, ā€œMendicants, suppose a mendicant were to hold the corner of my cloak and follow behind me step by step.

so ca hoti abhijjhālu kāmesu tibbasārāgo byāpannacitto paduį¹­į¹­hamanasaį¹…kappo muį¹­į¹­hassati asampajāno asamāhito vibbhantacitto pākatindriyo; Yet they covet sensual pleasures; theyā€™re infatuated, full of ill will and malicious intent. They are unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties.

atha kho so ārakāva mayhaį¹, ahaƱca tassa. Then they are far from me, and I from them.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

DhammaƱhi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na passati. Because that mendicant does not see the teaching.

Dhammaį¹ apassanto na maį¹ passati. Not seeing the teaching, they do not see me.

Yojanasate cepi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya. Suppose a mendicant were to live a hundred leagues away.

So ca hoti anabhijjhālu kāmesu na tibbasārāgo abyāpannacitto apaduį¹­į¹­hamanasaį¹…kappo upaį¹­į¹­hitassati sampajāno samāhito ekaggacitto saį¹vutindriyo; Yet they do not covet sensual pleasures; theyā€™re not infatuated, or full of ill will and malicious intent. They have established mindfulness, situational awareness and immersion, with unified mind and restrained faculties.

atha kho so santikeva mayhaį¹, ahaƱca tassa. Then they are close to me, and I to them.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

DhammaƱhi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu passati; Because that mendicant sees the teaching.

dhammaį¹ passanto maį¹ passatÄ«ā€ti. Seeing the teaching, they see me.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œAnubandhopi ce assa, ā€œOne full of desire and distress

mahiccho ca vighātavā; may follow close behind,

Ejānugo anejassa, yet see how distant they areā€”

nibbutassa anibbuto; the stirred from the still,

Giddho so vītagedhassa, the burning from the quenched,

passa yāvaƱca ārakā. the greedy from the greedless.

Yo ca dhammamabhiƱƱāya, An astute person who has understood

dhammamaƱƱāya paį¹‡įøito; and directly known the teaching,

Rahadova nivāte ca, grows calm,

anejo vūpasammati. like a lake unstirred by the wind.

Anejo so anejassa, See how close they areā€”

nibbutassa ca nibbuto; the still to the still,

Agiddho vītagedhassa, the quenched to the quenched,

passa yāvaƱca santikeā€ti. the greedless to the greedless.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
