VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āSaį¹
ghÄį¹ikaį¹į¹e cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu gahetvÄ piį¹į¹hito piį¹į¹hito anubandho assa pÄde pÄdaį¹ nikkhipanto, āMendicants, suppose a mendicant were to hold the corner of my cloak and follow behind me step by step.
so ca hoti abhijjhÄlu kÄmesu tibbasÄrÄgo byÄpannacitto paduį¹į¹hamanasaį¹
kappo muį¹į¹hassati asampajÄno asamÄhito vibbhantacitto pÄkatindriyo; Yet they covet sensual pleasures; theyāre infatuated, full of ill will and malicious intent. They are unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties.
atha kho so ÄrakÄva mayhaį¹, ahaƱca tassa. Then they are far from me, and I from them.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
DhammaƱhi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na passati. Because that mendicant does not see the teaching.
Dhammaį¹ apassanto na maį¹ passati. Not seeing the teaching, they do not see me.
Yojanasate cepi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya. Suppose a mendicant were to live a hundred leagues away.
So ca hoti anabhijjhÄlu kÄmesu na tibbasÄrÄgo abyÄpannacitto apaduį¹į¹hamanasaį¹
kappo upaį¹į¹hitassati sampajÄno samÄhito ekaggacitto saį¹vutindriyo; Yet they do not covet sensual pleasures; theyāre not infatuated, or full of ill will and malicious intent. They have established mindfulness, situational awareness and immersion, with unified mind and restrained faculties.
atha kho so santikeva mayhaį¹, ahaƱca tassa. Then they are close to me, and I to them.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
DhammaƱhi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu passati; Because that mendicant sees the teaching.
dhammaį¹ passanto maį¹ passatÄ«āti. Seeing the teaching, they see me.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āAnubandhopi ce assa, āOne full of desire and distress
mahiccho ca vighÄtavÄ; may follow close behind,
EjÄnugo anejassa, yet see how distant they areā
nibbutassa anibbuto; the stirred from the still,
Giddho so vītagedhassa, the burning from the quenched,
passa yÄvaƱca ÄrakÄ. the greedy from the greedless.
Yo ca dhammamabhiƱƱÄya, An astute person who has understood
dhammamaƱƱÄya paį¹įøito; and directly known the teaching,
Rahadova nivÄte ca, grows calm,
anejo vūpasammati. like a lake unstirred by the wind.
Anejo so anejassa, See how close they areā
nibbutassa ca nibbuto; the still to the still,
Agiddho vītagedhassa, the quenched to the quenched,
passa yÄvaƱca santikeāti. the greedless to the greedless.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
