Kāmayogasutta Yoked to Sensual Pleasures

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œKāmayogayutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto āgāmÄ« hoti āgantā itthattaį¹. ā€œMendicants, one yoked to both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a returner, who comes back to this place.

Kāmayogavisaį¹yutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto anāgāmÄ« hoti anāgantā itthattaį¹. One unyoked from sensual pleasures but still yoked to rebirth is a non-returner, who comes not back to this place.

Kāmayogavisaį¹yutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogavisaį¹yutto arahā hoti, khÄ«į¹‡Äsavoā€ti. One unyoked from both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a perfected one, who has ended defilements.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œKāmayogena saį¹yuttā, ā€œYoked to both sensual pleasures

bhavayogena cÅ«bhayaį¹; and the desire to be reborn in a future life;

Sattā gacchanti saį¹sāraį¹, sentient beings continue to transmigrate,

jātimaraį¹‡agāmino. with ongoing birth and death.

Ye ca kāme pahantvāna, Those whoā€™ve given up sensual pleasures

appattā āsavakkhayaį¹; without attaining the end of defilements,

Bhavayogena saį¹yuttā, and are still yoked to being reborn,

anāgāmīti vuccare. are said to be non-returners.

Ye ca kho chinnasaį¹sayā, Those who have cut off doubt,

khÄ«į¹‡amānapunabbhavā; and ended conceit and future lives,

Te ve pāraį¹…gatā loke, theyā€™re the ones in this world whoā€™ve truly crossed over,

ye pattā āsavakkhayanā€ti. having reached the ending of defilements.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
