KÄmayogasutta Yoked to Sensual Pleasures
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āKÄmayogayutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto ÄgÄmÄ« hoti ÄgantÄ itthattaį¹. āMendicants, one yoked to both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a returner, who comes back to this place.
KÄmayogavisaį¹yutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto anÄgÄmÄ« hoti anÄgantÄ itthattaį¹. One unyoked from sensual pleasures but still yoked to rebirth is a non-returner, who comes not back to this place.
KÄmayogavisaį¹yutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogavisaį¹yutto arahÄ hoti, khÄ«į¹Äsavoāti. One unyoked from both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a perfected one, who has ended defilements.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āKÄmayogena saį¹yuttÄ, āYoked to both sensual pleasures
bhavayogena cÅ«bhayaį¹; and the desire to be reborn in a future life;
SattÄ gacchanti saį¹sÄraį¹, sentient beings continue to transmigrate,
jÄtimaraį¹agÄmino. with ongoing birth and death.
Ye ca kÄme pahantvÄna, Those whoāve given up sensual pleasures
appattÄ Äsavakkhayaį¹; without attaining the end of defilements,
Bhavayogena saį¹yuttÄ, and are still yoked to being reborn,
anÄgÄmÄ«ti vuccare. are said to be non-returners.
Ye ca kho chinnasaį¹sayÄ, Those who have cut off doubt,
khÄ«į¹amÄnapunabbhavÄ; and ended conceit and future lives,
Te ve pÄraį¹
gatÄ loke, theyāre the ones in this world whoāve truly crossed over,
ye pattÄ Äsavakkhayanāti. having reached the ending of defilements.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
