VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āDvemÄni, bhikkhave, dÄnÄniāāThere are, mendicants, these two gifts.
ÄmisadÄnaƱca dhammadÄnaƱca. A gift of things of the flesh and a gift of the teaching.
Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ dÄnÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammadÄnaį¹. The better of these two gifts is the gift of the teaching.
Dveme, bhikkhave, saį¹vibhÄgÄāThere are these two kinds of sharing.
Ämisasaį¹vibhÄgo ca dhammasaį¹vibhÄgo ca. Sharing things of the flesh and sharing the teaching.
Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammasaį¹vibhÄgo. The better of these two kinds of sharing is sharing the teaching.
Dveme, bhikkhave, anuggahÄāThere are these two kinds of support.
ÄmisÄnuggaho ca dhammÄnuggaho ca. Support in things of the flesh and support in the teaching.
Etadaggaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ dvinnaį¹ anuggahÄnaį¹ yadidaį¹ dhammÄnuggahoāti. The better of these two kinds of support is support in the teaching.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYamÄhu dÄnaį¹ paramaį¹ anuttaraį¹, āIt is said to be the supreme, ultimate gift,
Yaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgaį¹ bhagavÄ avaį¹į¹ayi; and the sharing praised by the Buddha;
Aggamhi khettamhi pasannacitto, what wise and sensible person, confident in the best of fields,
ViĆ±Ć±Å« pajÄnaį¹ ko na yajetha kÄle. would not sow a such timely gift?
Ye ceva bhÄsanti suį¹anti cÅ«bhayaį¹, For those who are diligent in the dispensation of the Holy One,
PasannacittÄ sugatassa sÄsane; both those who speak and those who listen,
Tesaį¹ so attho paramo visujjhati, confident in the dispensation of the Holy One,
Ye appamattÄ sugatassa sÄsaneāti. such a gift purifies the highest goal.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
