VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œDhammenāhaį¹, bhikkhave, tevijjaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ paƱƱāpemi, nāƱƱaį¹ lapitalāpanamattena. ā€œMendicants, I define a brahmin in terms of the teaching as one who is master of the three knowledges, not the other who merely repeats what they are told.

KathaƱcāhaį¹, bhikkhave, dhammena tevijjaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ paƱƱāpemi, nāƱƱaį¹ lapitalāpanamattena? How so?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ekampi jātiį¹ dvepi jātiyo tissopi jātiyo catassopi jātiyo paƱcapi jātiyo dasapi jātiyo vÄ«sampi jātiyo tiį¹sampi jātiyo cattālÄ«sampi jātiyo paƱƱāsampi jātiyo jātisatampi jātisahassampi jātisatasahassampi anekepi saį¹vaį¹­į¹­akappe anekepi vivaį¹­į¹­akappe anekepi saį¹vaį¹­į¹­avivaį¹­į¹­akappe: ā€˜amutrāsiį¹ evaį¹nāmo evaį¹…gotto evaį¹vaį¹‡į¹‡o evamāhāro evaį¹sukhadukkhappaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« evamāyupariyanto. Iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati. Itā€™s when a mendicant recollects many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. They remember: ā€˜There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.ā€™ And so they recollect their many kinds of past lives, with features and details.

Ayamassa paį¹­hamā vijjā adhigatā hoti, avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā, tamo vihato, āloko uppanno, yathā taį¹ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato. This is the first knowledge they achieved. Ignorance was destroyed and knowledge arose; darkness was destroyed and light arose, as happens for a meditator who is diligent, keen, and resolute.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti: ā€˜ime vata bhonto sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā. Te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. Ime vā pana bhonto sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«sucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ anupavādakā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā. Te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti. Furthermore, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, a mendicant sees sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds: ā€˜These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They denounced the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never denounced the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€™ And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

Ayamassa dutiyā vijjā adhigatā hoti, avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā, tamo vihato, āloko uppanno, yathā taį¹ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato. This is the second knowledge they achieved. Ignorance was destroyed and knowledge arose; darkness was destroyed and light arose, as happens for a meditator who is diligent, keen, and resolute.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Furthermore, a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Ayamassa tatiyā vijjā adhigatā hoti, avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā, tamo vihato, āloko uppanno, yathā taį¹ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato. This is the third knowledge which they achieved. Ignorance was destroyed and knowledge arose; darkness was destroyed and light arose, as happens for a meditator who is diligent, keen, and resolute.

Evaį¹ kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, dhammena tevijjaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ paƱƱāpemi, nāƱƱaį¹ lapitalāpanamattenāā€ti. Thatā€™s how I define a brahmin in terms of the teaching as one who is master of the three knowledges, not the other who merely repeats what they are told.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œPubbenivāsaį¹ yoveti, ā€œOne who knows their past lives,

saggāpāyaƱca passati; sees heaven and places of loss,

Atho jātikkhayaį¹ patto, and has attained the end of rebirth,

abhiƱƱāvosito muni. is a sage of perfect insight.

Etāhi tīhi vijjāhi, Because of these three knowledges

tevijjo hoti brāhmaį¹‡o; a brahmin is a master of the three knowledges.

Tamahaį¹ vadāmi tevijjaį¹, Thatā€™s who I call a three-knowledge master,

nāƱƱaį¹ lapitalāpananā€ti. and not the other who repeats what they are told.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

aggi upaparikkhayā;
