VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āJÄnatohaį¹, bhikkhave, passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayaį¹ vadÄmi, no ajÄnato no apassato. āMendicants, I say that the ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see.
KiƱca, bhikkhave, jÄnato, kiį¹ passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti? For one who knows and sees what?
Idaį¹ dukkhanti, bhikkhave, jÄnato passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti. Ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoti, bhikkhave, jÄnato passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti. Ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoti, bhikkhave, jÄnato passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti. Ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄti, bhikkhave, jÄnato passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti. The ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, jÄnato evaį¹ passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hotÄ«āti. The ending of the defilements is for one who knows and sees this.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSekhassa sikkhamÄnassa, āAs a trainee trains,
ujumaggÄnusÄrino; following the straight road,
Khayasmiį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ ƱÄį¹aį¹, first they know about ending;
tato aĆ±Ć±Ä anantarÄ. enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.
Tato aƱƱÄvimuttassa, Then to one freed through enlightenment
vimuttiƱÄį¹amuttamaį¹; the knowledge of ending arises,
Uppajjati khaye ƱÄį¹aį¹, the supreme knowledge of freedom,
khÄ«į¹Ä saį¹yojanÄ iti. with the ending of the fetters.
Na tvevidaį¹ kusÄ«tena, This is not for the lazy,
bÄlenamavijÄnatÄ; the fools donāt understand,
NibbÄnaį¹ adhigantabbaį¹, extinguishment is realized
sabbaganthappamocananāti. with release from all ties.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
