Brāhmaį¹‡adhammayāgavagga The Chapter on the Brahminā€™s Offering of the Teaching

SÄ«lasampannasutta Accomplished in Ethics

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œYe te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sÄ«lasampannā samādhisampannā paƱƱāsampannā vimuttisampannā vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanasampannā ovādakā viƱƱāpakā sandassakā samādapakā samuttejakā sampahaį¹sakā alaį¹samakkhātāro saddhammassa dassanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi; ā€œMendicants, take a mendicant who is accomplished in ethics, immersion, wisdom, freedom, and the knowledge and vision of freedom. They advise and instruct. They educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire, and can rightly explain the true teaching. Even the sight of those mendicants is very helpful, I say.

savanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi; Even to hear them,

upasaį¹…kamanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi; approach them,

payirupāsanampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi; pay homage to them,

anussaraį¹‡ampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi; recollect them,

anupabbajjampahaį¹, bhikkhave, tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bahÅ«pakāraį¹ vadāmi. or go forth after them is very helpful, I say.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

TathārÅ«pe, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« sevato bhajato payirupāsato aparipÅ«ropi sÄ«lakkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi samādhikkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi paƱƱākkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttikkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati, aparipÅ«ropi vimuttiƱāį¹‡adassanakkhandho bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. For one who frequents and associates with such mendicants, their incomplete spectrum of ethics is completed. Their incomplete spectrum of immersion ā€¦ wisdom ā€¦ freedom ā€¦ knowledge and vision of freedom is completed.

EvarÅ«pā ca te, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« satthārotipi vuccanti, satthavāhātipi vuccanti, raį¹‡aƱjahātipi vuccanti, tamonudātipi vuccanti, ālokakarātipi vuccanti, obhāsakarātipi vuccanti, pajjotakarātipi vuccanti, ukkādhārātipi vuccanti, pabhaį¹…karātipi vuccanti, ariyātipi vuccanti, cakkhumantotipi vuccantÄ«ā€ti. Such mendicants are called ā€˜teachersā€™, ā€˜leaders of the caravanā€™, ā€˜vice-discardersā€™, ā€˜dispellers of darknessā€™, ā€˜bringers of lightā€™, ā€˜luminariesā€™, ā€˜lampsā€™, ā€˜candlebearersā€™, ā€˜beaconsā€™, ā€˜noble onesā€™, and ā€˜clear-eyed onesā€™.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œPāmojjakaraį¹‡aį¹ į¹hānaį¹, ā€œThis is a reason for joy

etaį¹ hoti vijānataį¹; for those who understand:

Yadidaį¹ bhāvitattānaį¹, that is, those who are evolved,

ariyānaį¹ dhammajÄ«vinaį¹. the noble ones living righteously.

Te jotayanti saddhammaį¹, They illuminate the true teaching,

bhāsayanti pabhaį¹…karā; beacons beaming light,

Ālokakaraį¹‡Ä dhÄ«rā, the attentive ones bringing light,

cakkhumanto raį¹‡aƱjahā. clear-eyed ones with vices discarded.

Yesaį¹ ve sāsanaį¹ sutvā, Having heard their instruction,

sammadaƱƱāya paį¹‡įøitā; the astute, understanding rightly,

JātikkhayamabhiƱƱāya, directly know the ending of rebirth,

nāgacchanti punabbhavanā€ti. they come not back to future lives.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

PaƱcamaį¹.
