VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āBahukÄrÄ, bhikkhave, brÄhmaį¹agahapatikÄ tumhÄkaį¹ ye vo paccupaį¹į¹hitÄ cÄ«varapiį¹įøapÄtasenÄsanagilÄnapaccayabhesajjaparikkhÄrehi. āMendicants, brahmins and householders are very helpful to you, as they provide you with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.
Tumhepi, bhikkhave, bahukÄrÄ brÄhmaį¹agahapatikÄnaį¹ yaį¹ nesaį¹ dhammaį¹ desetha ÄdikalyÄį¹aį¹ majjhekalyÄį¹aį¹ pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹aį¹ sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹, kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ pakÄsetha. And you are very helpful to brahmins and householders, as you teach them the Dhamma thatās good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And you reveal a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure.
Evamidaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ nissÄya brahmacariyaį¹ vussati oghassa nittharaį¹atthÄya sammÄ dukkhassa antakiriyÄyÄāti. That is how this spiritual path is lived supporting each other in order to cross over the flood and make a complete end of suffering.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSÄgÄrÄ anagÄrÄ ca, āThe home-dweller and the homeless,
ubho aƱƱoƱƱanissitÄ; supporting each other,
ÄrÄdhayanti saddhammaį¹, find success in the true teaching,
yogakkhemaį¹ anuttaraį¹. the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.
SÄgÄresu ca cÄ«varaį¹, The homeless receive requisites
paccayaį¹ sayanÄsanaį¹; from the home-dwellers:
AnagÄrÄ paį¹icchanti, robes and lodgings
parissayavinodanaį¹. to shelter from harsh conditions.
Sugataį¹ pana nissÄya, Relying on the Holy One,
gahaį¹į¹hÄ gharamesino; home-loving layfolk
SaddahÄnÄ arahataį¹, place faith in the perfected ones,
ariyapaƱƱÄya jhÄyino. meditators of noble wisdom.
Idha dhammaį¹ caritvÄna, Having practiced the teaching here,
maggaį¹ sugatigÄminaį¹; the path that goes to a good place,
Nandino devalokasmiį¹, they delight in the heavenly realm,
modanti kÄmakÄminoāti. enjoying all the pleasures they desire.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
