Nadīsotasutta A River
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso nadiyÄ sotena ovuyheyya piyarÅ«pasÄtarÅ«pena. āSuppose a person was being carried along by a river current that seemed nice and pleasant.
Tamenaį¹ cakkhumÄ puriso tÄ«re į¹hito disvÄ evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw them, theyād say:
ākiƱcÄpi kho tvaį¹, ambho purisa, nadiyÄ sotena ovuyhasi piyarÅ«pasÄtarÅ«pena, atthi cettha heį¹į¹hÄ rahado saÅ«mi sÄvaį¹į¹o sagaho sarakkhaso yaį¹ tvaį¹, ambho purisa, rahadaį¹ pÄpuį¹itvÄ maraį¹aį¹ vÄ nigacchasi maraį¹amattaį¹ vÄ dukkhanāti. āWorthy man, even though the river current carrying you along seems nice and pleasant, downstream there is a lake with waves and whirlpools, saltwater crocodiles and monsters. When you reach there it will result in death or deadly pain.ā
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso tassa purisassa saddaį¹ sutvÄ hatthehi ca pÄdehi ca paį¹isotaį¹ vÄyameyya. Then, when they heard what was said, theyād paddle against the stream using their hands and feet.
UpamÄ kho me ayaį¹, bhikkhave, katÄ atthassa viƱƱÄpanÄya. Iāve made up this simile to make a point.
AyaƱcettha attho: And this is the point.
ānadiyÄ sotoāti kho, bhikkhave, taį¹hÄyetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āRiver currentā is a term for craving.
āPiyarÅ«paį¹ sÄtarÅ«panāti kho, bhikkhave, channetaį¹ ajjhattikÄnaį¹ ÄyatanÄnaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āSeeming nice and pleasantā is a term for the six interior sense fields.
āHeį¹į¹hÄ rahadoāti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āA downstream lakeā is a term for the five lower fetters.
āÅŖmibhayanāti kho, bhikkhave, kodhupÄyÄsassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āDanger of wavesā is a term for anger and distress.
āÄvaį¹į¹anāti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannetaį¹ kÄmaguį¹Änaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āWhirlpoolā is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation.
āGaharakkhasoāti kho, bhikkhave, mÄtugÄmassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āSaltwater crocodiles and monstersā is a term for females.
āPaį¹isotoāti kho, bhikkhave, nekkhammassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āAgainst the streamā is a term for renunciation.
āHatthehi ca pÄdehi ca vÄyÄmoāti kho, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyÄrambhassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. āPaddling with hands and feetā is a term for rousing energy.
āCakkhumÄ puriso tÄ«re į¹hitoāti kho, bhikkhave, tathÄgatassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹ arahato sammÄsambuddhassÄāti. āA person with clear eyesā is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āSahÄpi dukkhena jaheyya kÄme, āIn pain theyād give up sensual pleasures,
Yogakkhemaį¹ Äyatiį¹ patthayÄno; aspiring to the future sanctuary from the yoke.
SammappajÄno suvimuttacitto, With deep understanding and heart well freed,
VimuttiyÄ phassaye tattha tattha; theyād experience universal liberation.
Sa vedagū vūsitabrahmacariyo, That knowledge master who has completed the spiritual journey,
LokantagÅ« pÄragatoti vuccatÄ«āti. and gone to the end of the world, is called āone who has gone beyondā.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
