Nadīsotasutta A River

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso nadiyā sotena ovuyheyya piyarÅ«pasātarÅ«pena. ā€œSuppose a person was being carried along by a river current that seemed nice and pleasant.

Tamenaį¹ cakkhumā puriso tÄ«re į¹­hito disvā evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw them, theyā€™d say:

ā€˜kiƱcāpi kho tvaį¹, ambho purisa, nadiyā sotena ovuyhasi piyarÅ«pasātarÅ«pena, atthi cettha heį¹­į¹­hā rahado saÅ«mi sāvaį¹­į¹­o sagaho sarakkhaso yaį¹ tvaį¹, ambho purisa, rahadaį¹ pāpuį¹‡itvā maraį¹‡aį¹ vā nigacchasi maraį¹‡amattaį¹ vā dukkhanā€™ti. ā€˜Worthy man, even though the river current carrying you along seems nice and pleasant, downstream there is a lake with waves and whirlpools, saltwater crocodiles and monsters. When you reach there it will result in death or deadly pain.ā€™

Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso tassa purisassa saddaį¹ sutvā hatthehi ca pādehi ca paį¹­isotaį¹ vāyameyya. Then, when they heard what was said, theyā€™d paddle against the stream using their hands and feet.

Upamā kho me ayaį¹, bhikkhave, katā atthassa viƱƱāpanāya. Iā€™ve made up this simile to make a point.

AyaƱcettha attho: And this is the point.

ā€˜nadiyā sotoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, taį¹‡hāyetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜River currentā€™ is a term for craving.

ā€˜PiyarÅ«paį¹ sātarÅ«panā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, channetaį¹ ajjhattikānaį¹ āyatanānaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Seeming nice and pleasantā€™ is a term for the six interior sense fields.

ā€˜Heį¹­į¹­hā rahadoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜A downstream lakeā€™ is a term for the five lower fetters.

ā€˜ÅŖmibhayanā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, kodhupāyāsassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Danger of wavesā€™ is a term for anger and distress.

ā€˜Ä€vaį¹­į¹­anā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannetaį¹ kāmaguį¹‡Änaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Whirlpoolā€™ is a term for the five kinds of sensual stimulation.

ā€˜Gaharakkhasoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Saltwater crocodiles and monstersā€™ is a term for females.

ā€˜Paį¹­isotoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, nekkhammassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Against the streamā€™ is a term for renunciation.

ā€˜Hatthehi ca pādehi ca vāyāmoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, vÄ«riyārambhassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹. ā€˜Paddling with hands and feetā€™ is a term for rousing energy.

ā€˜Cakkhumā puriso tÄ«re į¹­hitoā€™ti kho, bhikkhave, tathāgatassetaį¹ adhivacanaį¹ arahato sammāsambuddhassāā€ti. ā€˜A person with clear eyesā€™ is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSahāpi dukkhena jaheyya kāme, ā€œIn pain theyā€™d give up sensual pleasures,

Yogakkhemaį¹ āyatiį¹ patthayāno; aspiring to the future sanctuary from the yoke.

Sammappajāno suvimuttacitto, With deep understanding and heart well freed,

Vimuttiyā phassaye tattha tattha; theyā€™d experience universal liberation.

Sa vedagū vūsitabrahmacariyo, That knowledge master who has completed the spiritual journey,

LokantagÅ« pāragatoti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. and gone to the end of the world, is called ā€˜one who has gone beyondā€™.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
