āCarato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kÄmavitakko vÄ byÄpÄdavitakko vÄ vihiį¹sÄvitakko vÄ. āMendicants, suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.
TaƱce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhivÄseti nappajahati na vinodeti na byantÄ«karoti na anabhÄvaį¹ gameti. They tolerate it and donāt give it up, get rid of it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a mendicant is said to be ānot keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energyā when walking.

āCaraį¹ vÄ yadi vÄ tiį¹į¹haį¹, āWhether walking or standing,
nisinno uda vÄ sayaį¹; sitting or lying down,
Yo vitakkaį¹ vitakketi, one who thinks a bad thought
pÄpakaį¹ gehanissitaį¹. to do with the domestic life
Kummaggaį¹ paį¹ipanno so, is practicing the wrong way,
mohaneyyesu mucchito; lost among things that delude;
Abhabbo tÄdiso bhikkhu, such a mendicant is incapable
phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamaį¹. of experiencing the highest awakening.
Yo ca caraį¹ vÄ tiį¹į¹haį¹ vÄ, But one who, whether standing or walking,
Nisinno uda vÄ sayaį¹; sitting or lying down,
Vitakkaį¹ samayitvÄna, has calmed their thoughts,
Vitakkūpasame rato; loving peace of mind;
Bhabbo so tÄdiso bhikkhu, such a mendicant is capable
Phuį¹į¹huį¹ sambodhimuttamanāti. of experiencing the highest awakening.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
