Lokasutta The World

VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œLoko, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho, ā€œMendicants, the world has been understood by the Realized One;

lokasmā tathāgato visaį¹yutto. and he is detached from the world.

Lokasamudayo, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho, The origin of the world has been understood by the Realized One;

lokasamudayo tathāgatassa pahīno. and he has given up the origin of the world.

Lokanirodho, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddho, The cessation of the world has been understood by the Realized One;

lokanirodho tathāgatassa sacchikato. and he has realized the cessation of the world.

LokanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā, bhikkhave, tathāgatena abhisambuddhā, The practice that leads to the cessation of the world has been understood by the Realized One;

lokanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā tathāgatassa bhāvitā. and he has developed the practice that leads to the cessation of the world.

Yaį¹, bhikkhave, sadevakassa lokassa samārakassa sabrahmakassa sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya diį¹­į¹­haį¹ sutaį¹ mutaį¹ viƱƱātaį¹ pattaį¹ pariyesitaį¹ anuvicaritaį¹ manasā yasmā taį¹ tathāgatena abhisambuddhaį¹, In this worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansā€”whatever is seen, heard, thought, known, attained, sought, and explored by the mind, all that has been understood by the Realized One.

tasmā ā€˜tathāgatoā€™ti vuccati. Thatā€™s why heā€™s called the ā€˜Realized Oneā€™.

YaƱca, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ tathāgato anuttaraį¹ sammāsambodhiį¹ abhisambujjhati, yaƱca rattiį¹ anupādisesāya nibbānadhātuyā parinibbāyati, yaį¹ etasmiį¹ antare bhāsati lapati niddisati, sabbaį¹ taį¹ tatheva hoti no aƱƱathā, From the night when the Realized One understands the supreme perfect awakening until the night he becomes fully extinguishedā€”in the element of extinguishment with no residueā€”everything he speaks, says, and expresses is real, not otherwise.

tasmā ā€˜tathāgatoā€™ti vuccati. Thatā€™s why heā€™s called the ā€˜Realized Oneā€™.

Yathāvādī, bhikkhave, tathāgato tathākārī, yathākārī tathāvādī, The Realized One does as he says, and says as he does.

iti yathāvādī tathākārī yathākārī tathāvādī, Since this is so,

tasmā ā€˜tathāgatoā€™ti vuccati. thatā€™s why heā€™s called the ā€˜Realized Oneā€™.

Sadevake, bhikkhave, loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya tathāgato abhibhÅ« anabhibhÅ«to aƱƱadatthudaso vasavattÄ«, In this worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humansā€”the Realized One is the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power.

tasmā tathāgatoti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s why heā€™s called the ā€˜Realized Oneā€™.ā€

Etamatthaį¹ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSabbalokaį¹ abhiƱƱāya, ā€œDirectly knowing the whole world as it is,

sabbaloke yathātathaį¹; and everything in it,

Sabbalokavisaį¹yutto, he is detached from the whole world,

sabbaloke anūpayo. disengaged from the whole world.

Sa ve sabbābhibhū dhīro, That attentive one is the champion

sabbaganthappamocano; who is released from all ties.

Phuį¹­į¹­hāssa paramā santi, He has reached ultimate peace:

nibbānaį¹ akutobhayaį¹. extinguishment, fearing nothing from any quarter.

Esa khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo buddho, He is the Buddha, with defilements ended,

anÄ«gho chinnasaį¹sayo; untroubled, with doubts cut off.

Sabbakammakkhayaį¹ patto, He has attained the end of all deeds,

vimutto upadhisaį¹…khaye. freed with the ending of attachments.

Esa so bhagavā buddho, That Blessed One is the Buddha,

esa sīho anuttaro; he is the supreme lion,

Sadevakassa lokassa, in all the world with its gods,

brahmacakkaį¹ pavattayi. he turns the divine wheel.

Iti devā manussā ca, And so those gods and humans,

ye buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatā; who have gone to the Buddha for refuge,

Saį¹…gamma taį¹ namassanti, come together and revere him,

mahantaį¹ vÄ«tasāradaį¹. even the deities revere him:

Danto damayataį¹ seį¹­į¹­ho, ā€˜Tamed, he is the best of tamers,

santo samayataį¹ isi; peaceful, he is the seer among the peaceful,

Mutto mocayataį¹ aggo, liberated, he is the foremost of liberators,

tiį¹‡į¹‡o tārayataį¹ varo. crossed over, he is the most excellent of guides across.ā€™

Iti hetaį¹ namassanti, And so they revere him,

mahantaį¹ vÄ«tasāradaį¹; great of heart and intrepid.

Sadevakasmiį¹ lokasmiį¹, In the world with its gods,

natthi te paį¹­ipuggaloā€ti. he has no rival.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Terasamaį¹.

Catukkanipāto niį¹­į¹­hito.

Tassuddānaį¹

Brāhmaį¹‡asulabhā jānaį¹,

Samaį¹‡asÄ«lā taį¹‡hā brahmā;

Bahukārā kuhapurisā,

Cara sampannalokena terasāti.

Suttasaį¹…gaho

Sattavisekanipātaį¹,

Dukkaį¹ bāvÄ«sasuttasaį¹…gahitaį¹;

SamapaƱƱāsamathatikaį¹,

Terasa catukkaƱca iti yamidaį¹.

Dvidasuttarasuttasate,

Saį¹…gāyitvā samādahiį¹su purā;

Arahanto ciraį¹­į¹­hitiyā,

Tamāhu nāmena itivuttanti.

Itivuttakapāįø·i niį¹­į¹­hitā. The So it Was Said is finished.
