Karaį¹Ä«yamatthakusalena, Those who are skilled in the meaning of scripture
Yanta santaį¹ padaį¹ abhisamecca; should practice like this so as to realize the state of peace.
Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, Let them be capable and sincere, very sincere,
SÅ«vaco cassa mudu anatimÄnÄ«. easy to speak to, gentle and humble;
Santussako ca subharo ca, content and unburdensome,
Appakicco ca sallahukavutti; unbusied, living lightly,
Santindriyo ca nipako ca, alert, with senses calmed,
Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho. courteous, not fawning on families.
Na ca khuddamÄcare kiƱci, Let them not do the slightest thing
Yena viĆ±Ć±Å« pare upavadeyyuį¹; that others might blame with reason.
Sukhino va khemino hontu, May they be happy and safe!
SabbasattÄ bhavantu sukhitattÄ. May all beings be happy!
Ye keci pÄį¹abhÅ«tatthi, Whatever living creatures there are
TasÄ vÄ thÄvarÄ vanavasesÄ; with not a one left outā
DÄ«ghÄ vÄ ye va mahantÄ, frail or firm, long or large,
MajjhimÄ rassakÄ aį¹ukathÅ«lÄ. medium, small, tiny or round,
Diį¹į¹hÄ vÄ ye va adiį¹į¹hÄ, seen or unseen,
Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre; living far or near,
BhÅ«tÄ va sambhavesÄ« va, those who have been born and those about to be bornā
SabbasattÄ bhavantu sukhitattÄ. may all beings be happy!
Na paro paraį¹ nikubbetha, Let none deceive another,
NÄtimaƱƱetha katthaci na kaƱci; nor look down on anyone anywhere.
ByÄrosanÄ paį¹ighasaƱƱa, Though provoked or aggrieved,
NÄƱƱamaƱƱassa dukkhamiccheyya. let them not wish pain on each other.
MÄtÄ yathÄ niyaį¹ puttam Even as a mother would protect with her life
ÄyusÄ ekaputtamanurakkhe; her child, her only child,
Evampi sabbabhūtesu, so too for all creatures
MÄnasaį¹ bhÄvaye aparimÄį¹aį¹. unfold a boundless heart.
MettaƱca sabbalokasmi, With love for the whole world,
MÄnasaį¹ bhÄvaye aparimÄį¹aį¹; unfold a boundless heart:
Uddhaį¹ adho ca tiriyaƱca, above, below, all round,
AsambÄdhaį¹ averamasapattaį¹. unconstricted, without enemy or foe.
Tiį¹į¹haį¹ caraį¹ nisinno va, When standing, walking, sitting,
SayÄno yÄvatÄssa vitamiddho; or lying down while yet unweary,
Etaį¹ satiį¹ adhiį¹į¹heyya, keep this ever in mind;
Brahmametaį¹ vihÄramidhamÄhu. for this, they say, is a divine meditation in this life.
Diį¹į¹hiƱca anupaggamma, Avoiding harmful views,
SÄ«lavÄ dassanena sampanno; virtuous, accomplished in insight,
KÄmesu vinaya gedhaį¹, with desire for sensual pleasures dispelled,
Na hi jÄtuggabbhaseyya punaretÄ«ti. they never return to a womb again.
