Rājā āhaā€”The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, kiį¹lakkhaį¹‡Ä paƱƱāā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, what is the distinguishing characteristic of wisdom?ā€

ā€œPubbeva kho, mahārāja, mayā vuttaį¹ā€”ā€œPreviously, your majesty, I said that

ā€˜chedanalakkhaį¹‡Ä paƱƱāā€™ti, api ca obhāsanalakkhaį¹‡Ä paƱƱāā€ti. severing is a distinguishing characteristic of wisdom, and also illuminating is a distinguishing characteristic of wisdom.ā€

ā€œPaƱƱā, mahārāja, uppajjamānā avijjandhakāraį¹ vidhameti, vijjobhāsaį¹ janeti, Ʊāį¹‡Älokaį¹ vidaį¹seti, ariyasaccāni pākaį¹Äni karoti. ā€œWisdom arising, your majesty, dispels the darkness of ignorance, generates the radiance of true knowledge, displays the light of understanding, and makes evident the noble truths.

Tato yogāvacaro ā€˜aniccanā€™ti vā ā€˜dukkhanā€™ti vā ā€˜anattāā€™ti vā sammappaƱƱāya passatÄ«ā€ti. Then, a spiritual practitioner sees with right wisdom what is ā€˜impermanentā€™, ā€˜sufferingā€™, or ā€˜not selfā€™.ā€

ā€œOpammaį¹ karohÄ«ā€ti. ā€œPlease give me an analogy.ā€

evameva kho, mahārāja, paƱƱā uppajjamānā avijjandhakāraį¹ vidhameti, vijjobhāsaį¹ janeti, Ʊāį¹‡Älokaį¹ vidaį¹seti, ariyasaccāni pākaį¹Äni karoti. In the same way, your majesty, wisdom arising dispels the darkness of ignorance, generates the radiance of true knowledge, displays the light of understanding, and makes evident the noble truths.

Tato yogāvacaro ā€˜aniccanā€™ti vā ā€˜dukkhanā€™ti vā ā€˜anattāā€™ti vā sammappaƱƱāya passati. Then, a spiritual practitioner sees with right wisdom what is ā€˜impermanentā€™, ā€˜sufferingā€™, or ā€˜not selfā€™.

Evaį¹ kho, mahārāja, obhāsanalakkhaį¹‡Ä paƱƱāā€ti. Thus, your majesty, is illuminating a distinguishing characteristic of wisdom.ā€
