Thero āhaā€”The elder asked:

ā€œloį¹‡aį¹, mahārāja, cakkhuviƱƱeyyanā€ti. ā€œIs salt, your majesty, cognizable by the eye?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, cakkhuviƱƱeyyanā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, it is cognizable by the eye.ā€

ā€œSuį¹į¹hu kho, mahārāja, jānāhÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThink carefully, your majesty.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bhante, jivhāviƱƱeyyanā€ti? ā€œIs it then, venerable sir, cognizable by the tongue?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, jivhāviƱƱeyyanā€ti. ā€œYes, your majesty, it is cognizable by the tongue.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bhante, sabbaį¹ loį¹‡aį¹ jivhāya vijānātÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen, venerable sir, is all salt cognizable by the tongue?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, sabbaį¹ loį¹‡aį¹ jivhāya vijānātiā€. ā€œYes, your majesty, all salt is cognizable by the tongue.ā€

ā€œNa sakkā, mahārāja, loį¹‡ameva āharituį¹ ekatobhāvagatā ete dhammā gocaranānattagatā loį¹‡aį¹ garubhāvo cāti. ā€œIt is not possible to bring just salt, your majesty, since these things arise together with a diversity in their range, and as well, salt has heaviness.

Sakkā pana, mahārāja, loį¹‡aį¹ tulāya tulayitunā€ti? Is it possible to weigh salt on scales?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, sakkāā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, it is possible.ā€

ā€œNa sakkā, mahārāja, loį¹‡aį¹ tulāya tulayituį¹, garubhāvo tulāya tuliyatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIt is not possible, your majesty, to weigh salt on scales. One weighs the heaviness on scales.ā€
