3. Mahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡apaƱha Characteristics of a Great Person Question

Rājā āhaā€”The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, buddho dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgato asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjito suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡o kaƱcanasannibhattaco byāmappabhoā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, was the Buddha endowed with the thirty-two characteristics of a great person and distinguished with the eighty secondary features, with radiant complexion, skin like gold, and a halo that extends for one fathom?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, mahārāja, bhagavā dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgato asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjito suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡o kaƱcanasannibhattaco byāmappabhoā€ti. ā€œYes, your majesty, he was.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ panassa, bhante, mātāpitaropi dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgatā asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjitā suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kaƱcanasannibhattacā byāmappabhāā€ti? ā€œBut, venerable sir, were his mother and father endowed with the thirty-two characteristics of a great person ā€¦ and a halo that extends for one fathom?ā€

ā€œNo cassa, mahārāja, mātāpitaro dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgatā asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjitā suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kaƱcanasannibhattacā byāmappabhāā€ti. ā€œNo, your majesty, they were not.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹ sante kho, bhante nāgasena, na uppajjati buddho dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgato asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjito suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡o kaƱcanasannibhattaco byāmappabhoti, api ca mātusadiso vā putto hoti mātupakkho vā, pitusadiso vā putto hoti pitupakkho vāā€ti. ā€œThat being so, venerable sir, is it not then that the Buddha arose endowed with the thirty-two characteristics of a great person ā€¦ and a halo that extends for one fathom? But surely a child is like their mother or those on the motherā€™s side or like their father or those on their fatherā€™s side.ā€

Thero āhaā€”The elder said,

ā€œatthi pana, mahārāja, kiƱci padumaį¹ satapattanā€ti? ā€œBut is there, your majesty, any lotus with a hundred leaves?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, atthÄ«ā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, there is.ā€

ā€œTassa pana kuhiį¹ sambhavoā€ti? ā€œAnd where then is the origin for that?ā€

ā€œKaddame jāyati udake āsÄ«yatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIt is born from mud and it thrives in water.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, mahārāja, padumaį¹ kaddamena sadisaį¹ vaį¹‡į¹‡ena vā gandhena vā rasena vāā€ti? ā€œThen, your majesty, is the lotus like the mud in colour, smell, or taste?ā€

ā€œNa hi, bhanteā€ti. ā€œCertainly not, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œAtha udakena vā gandhena vā rasena vāā€ti? ā€œOr is it like the water in smell or taste?ā€

ā€œNa hi, bhanteā€ti. ā€œCertainly not, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, bhagavā dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgato asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjito suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡o kaƱcanasannibhattaco byāmappabho, no cassa mātāpitaro dvattiį¹samahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡ehi samannāgatā asÄ«tiyā ca anubyaƱjanehi pariraƱjitā suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡Ä kaƱcanasannibhattacā byāmappabhāā€ti. ā€œIn the same way, your majesty, the Buddha was endowed with the thirty-two characteristics of a great person and distinguished with the eighty secondary features, with radiant complexion, skin like gold, and a halo that extends for one fathom, and his parents were not.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
