RÄjÄ ÄhaāThe king asked:
ābhante nÄgasena, kena atÄ«taį¹ cirakataį¹ saratÄ«āti? āVenerable NÄgasena, how does one remember what was done long ago in the past?ā
āSatiyÄ, mahÄrÄjÄāti. āWith mindfulness, your majesty.ā
āNanu, bhante nÄgasena, cittena sarati no satiyÄāti? āIs it not, venerable NÄgasena, that one remembers with oneās mind and not with mindfulness?ā
āAbhijÄnÄsi nu tvaį¹, mahÄrÄja, kiƱcideva karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ katvÄ pamuį¹į¹hanāti? āDo you not know personally, your majesty, about some task you have done and have forgotten?ā
āÄma, bhanteāti. āYes, venerable sir.ā
āKiį¹ nu kho tvaį¹, mahÄrÄja, tasmiį¹ samaye acittako ahosÄ«āti? āThen were you, your majesty, on that occasion without a mind?ā
āNa hi, bhante, sati tasmiį¹ samaye nÄhosÄ«āti. āCertainly not, venerable sir, on that occasion there was no mindfulness.ā
āAtha kasmÄ tvaį¹, mahÄrÄja, evamÄhaāāSo, why do you say, your majesty, that
ācittena sarati, no satiyÄāāti? one remembers with oneās mind and not with mindfulness?ā
āKallosi, bhante nÄgasenÄāti. āYou are clever, venerable NÄgasena.ā
