11. AbhijÄnantasatipaƱha Question on Directly Knowing
RÄjÄ ÄhaāThe king asked:
ābhante nÄgasena, sabbÄ sati abhijÄnantÄ« uppajjati, udÄhu kaį¹umikÄva satÄ«āti? āVenerable NÄgasena, does all mindfulness arise through knowing directly or does it come with outside help?ā
āAbhijÄnantÄ«pi, mahÄrÄja, kaį¹umikÄpi satÄ«āti. āBy knowing directly, your majesty, and with outside help.ā
āEvaƱhi kho, bhante nÄgasena, sabbÄ sati abhijÄnantÄ«, natthi kaį¹umikÄ satÄ«āti? āIf thus, venerable NÄgasena, all mindfulness is from directly knowing, there is none with outside help.ā
āYadi natthi, mahÄrÄja, kaį¹umikÄ sati, natthi kiƱci sippikÄnaį¹ kammÄyatanehi vÄ sippÄyatanehi vÄ vijjÄį¹į¹hÄnehi vÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, niratthakÄ ÄcariyÄ, yasmÄ ca kho, mahÄrÄja, atthi kaį¹umikÄ sati, tasmÄ atthi kammÄyatanehi vÄ sippÄyatanehi vÄ vijjÄį¹į¹hÄnehi vÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, attho ca ÄcariyehÄ«āti. āIf there were no mindfulness with outside help, your majesty, then artisans would have no need for practice, or craftsmanship, or schooling, and teachers would be useless, but since there is mindfulness with outside help, the opposite is true.ā
āKallosi, bhante nÄgasenÄāti. āYou are clever, venerable NÄgasena.ā
