11. AbhijānantasatipaƱha Question on Directly Knowing

Rājā āhaā€”The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, sabbā sati abhijānantÄ« uppajjati, udāhu kaį¹umikāva satÄ«ā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, does all mindfulness arise through knowing directly or does it come with outside help?ā€

ā€œAbhijānantÄ«pi, mahārāja, kaį¹umikāpi satÄ«ā€ti. ā€œBy knowing directly, your majesty, and with outside help.ā€

ā€œEvaƱhi kho, bhante nāgasena, sabbā sati abhijānantÄ«, natthi kaį¹umikā satÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIf thus, venerable Nāgasena, all mindfulness is from directly knowing, there is none with outside help.ā€

ā€œYadi natthi, mahārāja, kaį¹umikā sati, natthi kiƱci sippikānaį¹ kammāyatanehi vā sippāyatanehi vā vijjāį¹į¹hānehi vā karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, niratthakā ācariyā, yasmā ca kho, mahārāja, atthi kaį¹umikā sati, tasmā atthi kammāyatanehi vā sippāyatanehi vā vijjāį¹į¹hānehi vā karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, attho ca ācariyehÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIf there were no mindfulness with outside help, your majesty, then artisans would have no need for practice, or craftsmanship, or schooling, and teachers would be useless, but since there is mindfulness with outside help, the opposite is true.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
