5. Dvinnaį¹lokuppannānaį¹samakabhāvapaƱha Question on Arising in Two Places Taking the Same Time

Rājā āhaā€”The king said,

ā€œbhante nāgasena, yo idha kālaį¹…kato brahmaloke uppajjeyya, yo ca idha kālaį¹…kato kasmÄ«re uppajjeyya, ko cirataraį¹ ko sÄ«ghataranā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, for one who having passed away is reborn in the Brahma world, and for one who having passed away is reborn in Kashmir, which one takes the longer time, and which the shorter?ā€

ā€œSamakaį¹, mahārājāā€ti. ā€œThey are the same, your majesty.ā€

ā€œOpammaį¹ karohÄ«ā€ti. ā€œGive me an analogy.ā€

ā€œKuhiį¹ pana, mahārāja, tava jātanagaranā€ti? ā€œWhere then, your majesty, is your town of birth?ā€

ā€œAtthi, bhante, kalasigāmo nāma, tatthāhaį¹ jātoā€ti. ā€œThere is a place called Kalasigāma, there I was born.ā€

ā€œKÄ«va dÅ«ro, mahārāja, ito kalasigāmo hotÄ«ā€ti. ā€œHow far away, your majesty, is Kalasigāma from here?ā€

ā€œDvimattāni, bhante, yojanasatānÄ«ā€ti. ā€œAbout 200 yojanas, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œKÄ«va dÅ«raį¹, mahārāja, ito kasmÄ«raį¹ hotÄ«ā€ti? ā€œHow far away, your majesty, is Kashmir from here?ā€

ā€œDvādasa, bhante, yojanānÄ«ā€ti. ā€œTwelve yojanas, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œIį¹…gha tvaį¹, mahārāja, kalasigāmaį¹ cintehÄ«ā€ti. ā€œGo on then, your majesty, think about Kalasigāma.ā€

ā€œCintito, bhanteā€ti. ā€œI have thought about it, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œIį¹…gha tvaį¹, mahārāja, kasmÄ«raį¹ cintehÄ«ā€ti. ā€œGo on then, your majesty, think about Kashmir.ā€

ā€œCintitaį¹, bhanteā€ti. ā€œI have thought about it, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œKatamaį¹ nu kho, mahārāja, cirena cintitaį¹, katamaį¹ sÄ«ghataranā€ti? ā€œWhich thinking took a long time, your majesty, and which a short time?ā€

ā€œSamakaį¹, bhanteā€ti. ā€œThey are the same, your majesty.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, yo idha kālaį¹…kato brahmaloke uppajjeyya, yo ca idha kālaį¹…kato kasmÄ«re uppajjeyya, samakaį¹yeva uppajjantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œJust so, your majesty, for one who having passed away is reborn in the Brahma world, and for one who having passed away is reborn in Kashmir, they happen in the same time.ā€

ā€œBhiyyo opammaį¹ karohÄ«ā€ti. ā€œGive me another analogy.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, mahārāja, dve sakuį¹‡Ä ākāsena gaccheyyuį¹, tesu eko ucce rukkhe nisÄ«deyya, eko nÄ«ce rukkhe nisÄ«deyya, tesaį¹ samakaį¹ patiį¹­į¹­hitānaį¹ katamassa chāyā paį¹­hamataraį¹ pathaviyaį¹ patiį¹­į¹­haheyya, katamassa chāyā cirena pathaviyaį¹ patiį¹­į¹­haheyyāā€ti? ā€œWhat do you think, your majesty, if two birds fly in the sky and one sits in a high tree, and the other in a low tree, if these happen at the same time, the shadow of which one would settle on the ground first, and which one later?ā€

ā€œSamakaį¹, bhanteā€ti. ā€œAt the same time, venerable sir.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, yo idha kālaį¹…kato brahmaloke uppajjeyya, yo ca idha kālaį¹…kato kasmÄ«re uppajjeyya, samakaį¹yeva uppajjantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œJust so, your majesty, for one who having passed away is reborn in the Brahma world, and for one who having passed away is reborn in Kashmir, they happen in the same time.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
