9. UttarakurukādigamanapaƱha Question on Traveling to Uttarakuru and Other Places

Rājā āhaā€”The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, atthi koci, yo iminā sarÄ«rena uttarakuruį¹ vā gaccheyya, brahmalokaį¹ vā, aƱƱaį¹ vā pana dÄ«panā€ti? ā€œVenerable Nāgasena, is there anybody who, with this mortal body, could go to Uttarakuru or to the Brahma world or to another continent?ā€

ā€œAtthi, mahārāja, yo iminā cātummahābhÅ«tikena kāyena uttarakuruį¹ vā gaccheyya, brahmalokaį¹ vā, aƱƱaį¹ vā pana dÄ«panā€ti. ā€œThere is, your majesty, someone who could, with this body composed of the four great elements, go to Uttarakuru or to the Brahma world or to another continent.ā€

ā€œKathaį¹, bhante nāgasena, iminā cātummahābhÅ«tikena kāyena uttarakuruį¹ vā gaccheyya, brahmalokaį¹ vā, aƱƱaį¹ vā pana dÄ«panā€ti? ā€œHow, venerable Nāgasena, could one, with this body composed of the four great elements, go to Uttarakuru or to the Brahma world or to another continent?"

ā€œAbhijānāsi nu tvaį¹, mahārāja, imissā pathaviyā vidatthiį¹ vā ratanaį¹ vā laį¹…ghitāā€ti? ā€œYour majesty, have you had the direct experience of jumping a hand span or a cubit on this earth?ā€

ā€œÄ€ma, bhante, abhijānāmi ā€˜ahaį¹, bhante nāgasena, aį¹­į¹­hapi rataniyo laį¹…ghemÄ«ā€™ā€ti. ā€œYes, venerable sir, I have had that direct experience,in fact I jump even eight cubits.ā€

ā€œKathaį¹ tvaį¹, mahārāja, aį¹­į¹­hapi rataniyo laį¹…ghesÄ«ā€ti? ā€œHow, your majesty, do you jump even eight cubits?ā€

ā€œAhaƱhi, bhante, cittaį¹ uppādemi ā€˜ettha nipatissāmÄ«ā€™ti saha cittuppādena kāyo me lahuko hotÄ«ā€ti. ā€œVenerable sir, I generate the thought ā€˜I will land here,ā€™ and with that thought my body is buoyant.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, mahārāja, iddhimā bhikkhu cetovasippatto kāyaį¹ citte samāropetvā cittavasena vehāsaį¹ gacchatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIn the same way, your majesty, a bhikkhu with psychic power and who has achieved mastery over his own mind, having entrusted his body to his mind, travels in the sky by means of this mind mastery.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
