12. SamuddapaƱha Question on the Sea

Rājā āhaā€”The king asked:

ā€œbhante nāgasena, ā€˜samuddo samuddoā€™ti vuccati, kena kāraį¹‡ena udakaį¹ ā€˜samuddoā€™ti vuccatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œVenerableĀ Nāgasena, it is called ā€˜the sea, the seaā€™. Why is the water called the sea?ā€

Thero āhaā€”The elder replied,

ā€œyattakaį¹, mahārāja, udakaį¹, tattakaį¹ loį¹‡aį¹. ā€œJust as much as there is water, your majesty, so much there is salt.

Yattakaį¹ loį¹‡aį¹, tattakaį¹ udakaį¹. Just as much as there is salt, so much there is water.

Tasmā ā€˜samuddoā€™ti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. Therefore, it is calledĀ  the sea.ā€

ā€œKallosi, bhante nāgasenāā€ti. ā€œYou are clever, venerable Nāgasena.ā€
