14. SukhumapaƱha Question on the Subtle
RÄjÄ ÄhaāThe king asked:
ābhante nÄgasena, sakkÄ sabbaį¹ sukhumaį¹ chinditunāti? āVenerable NÄgasena, is it possible to cut through the subtlest of all things?ā
āÄma, mahÄrÄja, sakkÄ sabbaį¹ sukhumaį¹ chinditunāti. āYes, your majesty, it is possible to cut through the subtlest of all things.ā
āKiį¹ pana, bhante, sabbaį¹ sukhumanāti? āThen what, venerable sir, is the subtlest of all things?ā
āDhammo kho, mahÄrÄja, sabbasukhumo, na kho, mahÄrÄja, dhammÄ sabbe sukhumÄ, āsukhumanāti vÄ āthÅ«lanāti vÄ dhammÄnametamadhivacanaį¹. āThe Dhamma, your majesty, is the subtlest of all things. But not all qualities are subtle, your majesty, subtle or coarse is a designation for a quality.
Yaį¹ kiƱci chinditabbaį¹, sabbaį¹ taį¹ paƱƱÄya chindati, natthi dutiyaį¹ paƱƱÄya chedananāti. Whatever is to be cut through, all that is cut through by wisdom. There is nothing else other than wisdom for cutting through.ā
āKallosi, bhante nÄgasenÄāti. āYou are clever, venerable NÄgasena.ā
