Hemavatasutta With Hemavata

ā€œAjja pannaraso uposatho, ā€œToday is the fifteenth day sabbath,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira, the native spirit of mount Sātā,

Dibbā ratti upaį¹­į¹­hitā; ā€œa holy night is at hand.

Anomanāmaį¹ satthāraį¹, Come now, let us see Gotama,

Handa passāma gotamaį¹ā€. the Teacher of peerless name.ā€

ā€œKacci mano supaį¹‡ihito, ā€œIsnā€™t his mind well-disposed,ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata, the native spirit of the Himalayas,

SabbabhÅ«tesu tādino; ā€œimpartial toward all creatures?

Kacci iį¹­į¹­he aniį¹­į¹­he ca, And arenā€™t his thoughts under control

Saį¹…kappassa vasÄ«katāā€. when it comes to likes and dislikes?ā€

ā€œMano cassa supaį¹‡ihito, ā€œHis mind is well-disposed,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira,

SabbabhÅ«tesu tādino; ā€œimpartial towards all creatures.

Atho iį¹­į¹­he aniį¹­į¹­he ca, His thoughts are under control

Saį¹…kappassa vasÄ«katāā€. when it comes to his likes and dislikes.ā€

ā€œKacci adinnaį¹ nādiyati, ā€œDoesnā€™t he not steal?ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,

Kacci pāį¹‡esu saƱƱato; ā€œAnd doesnā€™t he harm not a creature?

Kacci ārā pamādamhā, Isnā€™t he far from negligence?

Kacci jhānaį¹ na riƱcatiā€. And doesnā€™t he not neglect absorption?ā€

ā€œNa so adinnaį¹ ādiyati, ā€œHe does not take what is not given,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira,

Atho pāį¹‡esu saƱƱato; ā€œand he harms not a creature.

Atho ārā pamādamhā, He is far from negligenceā€”

Buddho jhānaį¹ na riƱcatiā€. the Buddha does not neglect absorption.ā€

ā€œKacci musā na bhaį¹‡ati, ā€œDoesnā€™t he avoid lying?ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,

Kacci na khÄ«į¹‡abyappatho; ā€œAnd doesnā€™t he not speak sharply?

Kacci vebhÅ«tiyaį¹ nāha, Doesnā€™t he avoid divisive speech,

Kacci samphaį¹ na bhāsatiā€. as well as speaking nonsense?ā€

ā€œMusā ca so na bhaį¹‡ati, ā€œHe does not lie,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira,

Atho na khÄ«į¹‡abyappatho; ā€œnor does he speak sharply.

Atho vebhÅ«tiyaį¹ nāha, He avoids divisive speech,

Mantā atthaƱca bhāsatiā€. and thoughtfully speaks wise counsel.ā€

ā€œKacci na rajjati kāmesu, ā€œDoesnā€™t he find sensual pleasures unattractive?ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,

Kacci cittaį¹ anāvilaį¹; ā€œAnd isnā€™t his mind unclouded?

Kacci mohaį¹ atikkanto, Hasnā€™t he escaped delusion?

Kacci dhammesu cakkhumāā€. Does his eye see clearly in all things?ā€

ā€œNa so rajjati kāmesu, ā€œHe does not find sensual pleasures attractive,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira,

Atho cittaį¹ anāvilaį¹; ā€œand his mind is unclouded.

Sabbamohaį¹ atikkanto, He has escaped all delusionā€”

Buddho dhammesu cakkhumāā€. the Buddha, whose eye sees clearly in all things.ā€

ā€œKacci vijjāya sampanno, ā€œIsnā€™t he accomplished in knowledge?ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,

Kacci saį¹suddhacāraį¹‡o; ā€œAnd doesnā€™t he live a pure life?

Kaccissa āsavā khÄ«į¹‡Ä, Arenā€™t his defilements all ended?

Kacci natthi punabbhavoā€. Doesnā€™t he have no future lives?ā€

ā€œVijjāya ceva sampanno, ā€œHe is accomplished in knowledge,ā€

(iti sātāgiro yakkho) said Sātāgira,

Atho saį¹suddhacāraį¹‡o; ā€œand he does live a pure life.

Sabbassa āsavā khÄ«į¹‡Ä, His defilements are all ended,

Natthi tassa punabbhavoā€. thereā€™ll be no more future lives for him.ā€

ā€œSampannaį¹ munino cittaį¹, ā€œAccomplished is the sageā€™s mind

Kammunā byappathena ca; in action and in speech,

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampannaį¹, and heā€™s accomplished in knowledge and conduct

Dhammato naį¹ pasaį¹satiā€. as per the teaching you praise.ā€

ā€œSampannaį¹ munino cittaį¹, ā€œAccomplished is the sageā€™s mind

Kammunā byappathena ca; in action and in speech,

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampannaį¹, and heā€™s accomplished in knowledge and conduct

Dhammato anumodasi. as per the teaching you rejoice in.

Sampannaį¹ munino cittaį¹, Accomplished is the sageā€™s mind

Kammunā byappathena ca; in action and in speech,

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampannaį¹, and heā€™s accomplished in knowledge and conduct:

Handa passāma gotamaį¹ā€. come now, let us see Gotama.ā€

ā€œEį¹‡ijaį¹…ghaį¹ kisaį¹ vÄ«raį¹, ā€œThe hero so lean, with antelope calves,

Appāhāraį¹ alolupaį¹; not greedy, eating little,

Muniį¹ vanasmiį¹ jhāyantaį¹, the sage meditating alone in the forest,

Ehi passāma gotamaį¹. come now, let us see Gotama.

SÄ«haį¹vekacaraį¹ nāgaį¹, A giant, wandering alone like a lion,

Kāmesu anapekkhinaį¹; unconcerned for sensual pleasures,

Upasaį¹…kamma pucchāma, letā€™s approach him and ask about

Maccupāsappamocanaį¹. release from the snare of death.ā€

Akkhātāraį¹ pavattāraį¹, ā€œThe communicator, the instructor,

Sabbadhammāna pāraguį¹; who has gone beyond all things,

Buddhaį¹ verabhayātÄ«taį¹, Awakened, beyond enmity and fear,

Mayaį¹ pucchāma gotamaį¹ā€. let us ask Gotama.ā€

ā€œKismiį¹ loko samuppanno, ā€œWhat has the world arisen in?ā€

(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,

Kismiį¹ kubbati santhavaį¹; What does it get close to?

Kissa loko upādāya, By grasping what

Kismiį¹ loko vihaƱƱatiā€. is the world troubled in what?ā€

ā€œChasu loko samuppanno, ā€œThe worldā€™s arisen in six,ā€

(hemavatāti bhagavā) said the Buddha to Hemavata.

Chasu kubbati santhavaį¹; ā€œIt gets close to six.

Channameva upādāya, By grasping at these six,

Chasu loko vihaƱƱatiā€. the worldā€™s troubled in six.ā€

ā€œKatamaį¹ taį¹ upādānaį¹, ā€œWhat is that grasping

Yattha loko vihaƱƱati; by which the world is troubled?

Niyyānaį¹ pucchito brÅ«hi, Tell us the exit when asked:

Kathaį¹ dukkhā pamuccatiā€. how is one released from all suffering?ā€

ā€œPaƱca kāmaguį¹‡Ä loke, ā€œThe world has five kinds of sensual stimulation,

Manochaį¹­į¹­hā paveditā; and the mind is said to be the sixth.

Ettha chandaį¹ virājetvā, When youā€™ve discarded desire for these,

Evaį¹ dukkhā pamuccati. youā€™re released from all suffering.

Etaį¹ lokassa niyyānaį¹, This is the exit from the world,

Akkhātaį¹ vo yathātathaį¹; explained in accord with the truth.

Etaį¹ vo ahamakkhāmi, The way Iā€™ve explained it is how

Evaį¹ dukkhā pamuccatiā€. youā€™re released from all suffering.ā€

ā€œKo sÅ«dha tarati oghaį¹, ā€œWho here crosses the flood,

Kodha tarati aį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹; Who crosses the deluge?

Appatiį¹­į¹­he anālambe, Who, not standing and unsupported,

Ko gambhÄ«re na sÄ«datiā€. does not sink in the deep?ā€

ā€œSabbadā sÄ«lasampanno, ā€œSomeone who is always endowed with ethics,

PaƱƱavā susamāhito; wise and serene,

Ajjhattacintī satimā, inwardly reflective, mindful,

Oghaį¹ tarati duttaraį¹. crosses the flood so hard to cross.

Virato kāmasaƱƱāya, Someone who desists from sensual perception,

Sabbasaį¹yojanātigo; who has escaped all fetters,

NandÄ«bhavaparikkhÄ«į¹‡o, and has ended relish for rebirth,

So gambhÄ«re na sÄ«datiā€. does not sink in the deep.ā€

ā€œGambhÄ«rapaƱƱaį¹ nipuį¹‡atthadassiį¹, ā€œBehold him of wisdom deep who sees the subtle meaning,

AkiƱcanaį¹ kāmabhave asattaį¹; who has nothing, unattached to sensual life,

Taį¹ passatha sabbadhi vippamuttaį¹, everywhere free,

Dibbe pathe kamamānaį¹ mahesiį¹. the great seer treading the holy road.

Anomanāmaį¹ nipuį¹‡atthadassiį¹, Behold him of peerless name who sees the subtle meaning,

PaƱƱādadaį¹ kāmālaye asattaį¹; giver of wisdom, unattached to the realm of sensuality:

Taį¹ passatha sabbaviduį¹ sumedhaį¹, see him, the all-knower, so very intelligent,

Ariye pathe kamamānaį¹ mahesiį¹. the great seer treading the noble road.ā€

Sudiį¹­į¹­haį¹ vata no ajja, ā€œIt was a fine sight for us today,

Suppabhātaį¹ suhuį¹­į¹­hitaį¹; a good dawn, a good rising,

Yaį¹ addasāma sambuddhaį¹, to see the Awakened One,

Oghatiį¹‡į¹‡amanāsavaį¹. the undefiled one who has crossed the flood.

Ime dasasatā yakkhā, These thousand native spirits

Iddhimanto yasassino; powerful and glorious,

Sabbe taį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ yanti, all go to you for refuge,

Tvaį¹ no satthā anuttaro. you are our supreme Teacher.

Te mayaį¹ vicarissāma, We shall journey

Gāmā gāmaį¹ nagā nagaį¹; village to village, peak to peak,

Namassamānā sambuddhaį¹, paying homage to the Buddha,

Dhammassa ca sudhammatanā€ti. and the natural excellence of the teaching!ā€

Hemavatasuttaį¹ navamaį¹.
