Hemavatasutta With Hemavata
āAjja pannaraso uposatho, āToday is the fifteenth day sabbath,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira, the native spirit of mount SÄtÄ,
DibbÄ ratti upaį¹į¹hitÄ; āa holy night is at hand.
AnomanÄmaį¹ satthÄraį¹, Come now, let us see Gotama,
Handa passÄma gotamaį¹ā. the Teacher of peerless name.ā
āKacci mano supaį¹ihito, āIsnāt his mind well-disposed,ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata, the native spirit of the Himalayas,
SabbabhÅ«tesu tÄdino; āimpartial toward all creatures?
Kacci iį¹į¹he aniį¹į¹he ca, And arenāt his thoughts under control
Saį¹
kappassa vasÄ«katÄā. when it comes to likes and dislikes?ā
āMano cassa supaį¹ihito, āHis mind is well-disposed,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira,
SabbabhÅ«tesu tÄdino; āimpartial towards all creatures.
Atho iį¹į¹he aniį¹į¹he ca, His thoughts are under control
Saį¹
kappassa vasÄ«katÄā. when it comes to his likes and dislikes.ā
āKacci adinnaį¹ nÄdiyati, āDoesnāt he not steal?ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,
Kacci pÄį¹esu saƱƱato; āAnd doesnāt he harm not a creature?
Kacci ÄrÄ pamÄdamhÄ, Isnāt he far from negligence?
Kacci jhÄnaį¹ na riƱcatiā. And doesnāt he not neglect absorption?ā
āNa so adinnaį¹ Ädiyati, āHe does not take what is not given,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira,
Atho pÄį¹esu saƱƱato; āand he harms not a creature.
Atho ÄrÄ pamÄdamhÄ, He is far from negligenceā
Buddho jhÄnaį¹ na riƱcatiā. the Buddha does not neglect absorption.ā
āKacci musÄ na bhaį¹ati, āDoesnāt he avoid lying?ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,
Kacci na khÄ«į¹abyappatho; āAnd doesnāt he not speak sharply?
Kacci vebhÅ«tiyaį¹ nÄha, Doesnāt he avoid divisive speech,
Kacci samphaį¹ na bhÄsatiā. as well as speaking nonsense?ā
āMusÄ ca so na bhaį¹ati, āHe does not lie,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira,
Atho na khÄ«į¹abyappatho; ānor does he speak sharply.
Atho vebhÅ«tiyaį¹ nÄha, He avoids divisive speech,
MantÄ atthaƱca bhÄsatiā. and thoughtfully speaks wise counsel.ā
āKacci na rajjati kÄmesu, āDoesnāt he find sensual pleasures unattractive?ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,
Kacci cittaį¹ anÄvilaį¹; āAnd isnāt his mind unclouded?
Kacci mohaį¹ atikkanto, Hasnāt he escaped delusion?
Kacci dhammesu cakkhumÄā. Does his eye see clearly in all things?ā
āNa so rajjati kÄmesu, āHe does not find sensual pleasures attractive,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira,
Atho cittaį¹ anÄvilaį¹; āand his mind is unclouded.
Sabbamohaį¹ atikkanto, He has escaped all delusionā
Buddho dhammesu cakkhumÄā. the Buddha, whose eye sees clearly in all things.ā
āKacci vijjÄya sampanno, āIsnāt he accomplished in knowledge?ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,
Kacci saį¹suddhacÄraį¹o; āAnd doesnāt he live a pure life?
Kaccissa ÄsavÄ khÄ«į¹Ä, Arenāt his defilements all ended?
Kacci natthi punabbhavoā. Doesnāt he have no future lives?ā
āVijjÄya ceva sampanno, āHe is accomplished in knowledge,ā
(iti sÄtÄgiro yakkho) said SÄtÄgira,
Atho saį¹suddhacÄraį¹o; āand he does live a pure life.
Sabbassa ÄsavÄ khÄ«į¹Ä, His defilements are all ended,
Natthi tassa punabbhavoā. thereāll be no more future lives for him.ā
āSampannaį¹ munino cittaį¹, āAccomplished is the sageās mind
KammunÄ byappathena ca; in action and in speech,
VijjÄcaraį¹asampannaį¹, and heās accomplished in knowledge and conduct
Dhammato naį¹ pasaį¹satiā. as per the teaching you praise.ā
āSampannaį¹ munino cittaį¹, āAccomplished is the sageās mind
KammunÄ byappathena ca; in action and in speech,
VijjÄcaraį¹asampannaį¹, and heās accomplished in knowledge and conduct
Dhammato anumodasi. as per the teaching you rejoice in.

ghaį¹ kisaį¹ vÄ«raį¹, āThe hero so lean, with antelope calves,
AppÄhÄraį¹ alolupaį¹; not greedy, eating little,
Muniį¹ vanasmiį¹ jhÄyantaį¹, the sage meditating alone in the forest,
Ehi passÄma gotamaį¹. come now, let us see Gotama.
SÄ«haį¹vekacaraį¹ nÄgaį¹, A giant, wandering alone like a lion,
KÄmesu anapekkhinaį¹; unconcerned for sensual pleasures,
Upasaį¹
kamma pucchÄma, letās approach him and ask about
MaccupÄsappamocanaį¹. release from the snare of death.ā
AkkhÄtÄraį¹ pavattÄraį¹, āThe communicator, the instructor,
SabbadhammÄna pÄraguį¹; who has gone beyond all things,
Buddhaį¹ verabhayÄtÄ«taį¹, Awakened, beyond enmity and fear,
Mayaį¹ pucchÄma gotamaį¹ā. let us ask Gotama.ā
āKismiį¹ loko samuppanno, āWhat has the world arisen in?ā
(iti hemavato yakkho) said Hemavata,
Kismiį¹ kubbati santhavaį¹; What does it get close to?
Kissa loko upÄdÄya, By grasping what
Kismiį¹ loko vihaƱƱatiā. is the world troubled in what?ā
āChasu loko samuppanno, āThe worldās arisen in six,ā
(hemavatÄti bhagavÄ) said the Buddha to Hemavata.
Chasu kubbati santhavaį¹; āIt gets close to six.
Channameva upÄdÄya, By grasping at these six,
Chasu loko vihaƱƱatiā. the worldās troubled in six.ā
āKatamaį¹ taį¹ upÄdÄnaį¹, āWhat is that grasping
Yattha loko vihaƱƱati; by which the world is troubled?
NiyyÄnaį¹ pucchito brÅ«hi, Tell us the exit when asked:
Kathaį¹ dukkhÄ pamuccatiā. how is one released from all suffering?ā
āPaƱca kÄmaguį¹Ä loke, āThe world has five kinds of sensual stimulation,
Manochaį¹į¹hÄ paveditÄ; and the mind is said to be the sixth.
Ettha chandaį¹ virÄjetvÄ, When youāve discarded desire for these,
Evaį¹ dukkhÄ pamuccati. youāre released from all suffering.
Etaį¹ lokassa niyyÄnaį¹, This is the exit from the world,
AkkhÄtaį¹ vo yathÄtathaį¹; explained in accord with the truth.
Etaį¹ vo ahamakkhÄmi, The way Iāve explained it is how
Evaį¹ dukkhÄ pamuccatiā. youāre released from all suffering.ā
āKo sÅ«dha tarati oghaį¹, āWho here crosses the flood,
Kodha tarati aį¹į¹avaį¹; Who crosses the deluge?
Appatiį¹į¹he anÄlambe, Who, not standing and unsupported,
Ko gambhÄ«re na sÄ«datiā. does not sink in the deep?ā
āSabbadÄ sÄ«lasampanno, āSomeone who is always endowed with ethics,
PaƱƱavÄ susamÄhito; wise and serene,
AjjhattacintÄ« satimÄ, inwardly reflective, mindful,
Oghaį¹ tarati duttaraį¹. crosses the flood so hard to cross.
Virato kÄmasaƱƱÄya, Someone who desists from sensual perception,
Sabbasaį¹yojanÄtigo; who has escaped all fetters,
NandÄ«bhavaparikkhÄ«į¹o, and has ended relish for rebirth,
So gambhÄ«re na sÄ«datiā. does not sink in the deep.ā
āGambhÄ«rapaƱƱaį¹ nipuį¹atthadassiį¹, āBehold him of wisdom deep who sees the subtle meaning,
AkiƱcanaį¹ kÄmabhave asattaį¹; who has nothing, unattached to sensual life,
Taį¹ passatha sabbadhi vippamuttaį¹, everywhere free,
Dibbe pathe kamamÄnaį¹ mahesiį¹. the great seer treading the holy road.
AnomanÄmaį¹ nipuį¹atthadassiį¹, Behold him of peerless name who sees the subtle meaning,
PaƱƱÄdadaį¹ kÄmÄlaye asattaį¹; giver of wisdom, unattached to the realm of sensuality:
Taį¹ passatha sabbaviduį¹ sumedhaį¹, see him, the all-knower, so very intelligent,
Ariye pathe kamamÄnaį¹ mahesiį¹. the great seer treading the noble road.ā
Sudiį¹į¹haį¹ vata no ajja, āIt was a fine sight for us today,
SuppabhÄtaį¹ suhuį¹į¹hitaį¹; a good dawn, a good rising,
Yaį¹ addasÄma sambuddhaį¹, to see the Awakened One,
Oghatiį¹į¹amanÄsavaį¹. the undefiled one who has crossed the flood.
Ime dasasatÄ yakkhÄ, These thousand native spirits
Iddhimanto yasassino; powerful and glorious,
Sabbe taį¹ saraį¹aį¹ yanti, all go to you for refuge,
Tvaį¹ no satthÄ anuttaro. you are our supreme Teacher.
Te mayaį¹ vicarissÄma, We shall journey
GÄmÄ gÄmaį¹ nagÄ nagaį¹; village to village, peak to peak,
NamassamÄnÄ sambuddhaį¹, paying homage to the Buddha,
Dhammassa ca sudhammatanāti. and the natural excellence of the teaching!ā
Hemavatasuttaį¹ navamaį¹.
