Paramaį¹­į¹­hakasutta Eight on the Ultimate

Paramanti diį¹­į¹­hÄ«su paribbasāno, If, maintaining that theirs is the ā€œultimateā€ view,

Yaduttari kurute jantu loke; a person makes it out to be highest in the world;

HÄ«nāti aƱƱe tato sabbamāha, then they declare all others are ā€œlesserā€;

Tasmā vivādāni avÄ«tivatto. thatā€™s why theyā€™re not over disputes.

YadattanÄ« passati ānisaį¹saį¹, If they see an advantage for themselves

Diį¹­į¹­he sute sÄ«lavate mute vā; in whatā€™s seen, heard, or thought; or in precepts or vows,

Tadeva so tattha samuggahāya, in that case, having adopted that one alone,

NihÄ«nato passati sabbamaƱƱaį¹. they see all others as inferior.

Taį¹ vāpi ganthaį¹ kusalā vadanti, Those who are skilled say that, too, is a knot,

Yaį¹ nissito passati hÄ«namaƱƱaį¹; relying on which people see others as lesser.

Tasmā hi diį¹­į¹­haį¹ va sutaį¹ mutaį¹ vā, Thatā€™s why a mendicant ought not rely

SÄ«labbataį¹ bhikkhu na nissayeyya. on whatā€™s seen, heard, or thought, or on precepts and vows.

Diį¹­į¹­himpi lokasmiį¹ na kappayeyya, Nor would they form a view about the world

Ƒāį¹‡ena vā sÄ«lavatena vāpi; through a notion or through precepts and vows.

Samoti attānamanÅ«paneyya, They would never represent themselves as ā€œequalā€,

HÄ«no na maƱƱetha visesi vāpi. nor conceive themselves ā€œworseā€ or ā€œbetterā€.

Attaį¹ pahāya anupādiyāno, What was picked up has been set down and is not grasped again;

Ƒāį¹‡epi so nissayaį¹ no karoti; they form no dependency even on notions.

Sa ve viyattesu na vaggasārī, They follow no side among the factions,

Diį¹­į¹­himpi so na pacceti kiƱci. and believe in no view at all.

YassÅ«bhayante paį¹‡idhÄ«dha natthi, One here who has no wish for either endā€”

Bhavābhavāya idha vā huraį¹ vā; for any state of existence in this life or the nextā€”

Nivesanā tassa na santi keci, has adopted no dogma at all

Dhammesu niccheyya samuggahÄ«taį¹. after judging among the teachings.

TassÄ«dha diį¹­į¹­he va sute mute vā, For them not even the tiniest idea is formulated here

Pakappitā natthi aį¹‡Å«pi saƱƱā; regarding what is seen, heard, or thought.

Taį¹ brāhmaį¹‡aį¹ diį¹­į¹­himanādiyānaį¹, That brahmin does not grasp any viewā€”

KenÄ«dha lokasmiį¹ vikappayeyya. how could anyone in this world judge them?

Na kappayanti na purekkharonti, They donā€™t make things up or promote them,

Dhammāpi tesaį¹ na paį¹­icchitāse; and donā€™t subscribe to any of the doctrines.

Na brāhmaį¹‡o sÄ«lavatena neyyo, The brahmin has no need to be led by precept or vow;

Pāraį¹…gato na pacceti tādÄ«ti. gone to the far shore, one such does not return.
