Ajitamāį¹‡avapucchā The Questions of Ajita

ā€œKenassu nivuto loko, ā€œBy what is the world shrouded?ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita.

Kenassu nappakāsati; ā€œWhy does it not shine?

Kissābhilepanaį¹ brÅ«si, Tell me, what is its tar pit?

Kiį¹su tassa mahabbhayaį¹ā€. What is its greatest fear?ā€

ā€œAvijjāya nivuto loko, ā€œThe world is shrouded in ignorance.ā€

(ajitāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha.

Vevicchā pamādā nappakāsati; ā€œAvarice and negligence make it not shine.

Jappābhilepanaį¹ brÅ«mi, Prayer is its tar pit.

Dukkhamassa mahabbhayaį¹ā€. Suffering is its greatest fear.ā€

ā€œSavanti sabbadhi sotā, ā€œThe streams flow everywhere,ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita.

Sotānaį¹ kiį¹ nivāraį¹‡aį¹; ā€œWhat is there to block them?

Sotānaį¹ saį¹varaį¹ brÅ«hi, And tell me the restraint of streamsā€”

Kena sotā pidhiyyareā€. by what are they locked out?ā€

ā€œYāni sotāni lokasmiį¹, ā€œThe streams in the world,ā€

(ajitāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Sati tesaį¹ nivāraį¹‡aį¹; ā€œare blocked by mindfulness.

Sotānaį¹ saį¹varaį¹ brÅ«mi, I tell you the restraint of streamsā€”

PaƱƱāyete pidhiyyareā€. they are locked out by wisdom.ā€

ā€œPaƱƱā ceva sati yaƱca, ā€œThat wisdom and mindfulness,ā€

(iccāyasmā ajito) said Venerable Ajita,

NāmarÅ«paƱca mārisa; ā€œand that which is name and form, good fellow;

Etaį¹ me puį¹­į¹­ho pabrÅ«hi, when questioned, please tell me of this:

Katthetaį¹ uparujjhatiā€. where does this all cease?ā€

ā€œYametaį¹ paƱhaį¹ apucchi, ā€œThis question which you have asked,

ajita taį¹ vadāmi te; I shall answer you, Ajita.

Yattha nāmaƱca rÅ«paƱca, Where name and form

asesaį¹ uparujjhati; cease with nothing left overā€”

ViƱƱāį¹‡assa nirodhena, with the cessation of consciousness,

etthetaį¹ uparujjhatiā€. here they cease.ā€

ā€œYe ca saį¹…khātadhammāse, ā€œThere are those who have appraised the teaching,

ye ca sekhā puthū idha; and many kinds of trainees here.

Tesaį¹ me nipako iriyaį¹, Tell me about their behavior, good fellow,

puį¹­į¹­ho pabrÅ«hi mārisaā€. when asked, for you are alert.ā€

ā€œKāmesu nābhigijjheyya, ā€œNot greedy for sensual pleasures,

Manasānāvilo siyā; their mind would be unclouded.

Kusalo sabbadhammānaį¹, Skilled in all things,

Sato bhikkhu paribbajeā€ti. a mendicant would wander mindful.ā€

Ajitamāį¹‡avapucchā paį¹­hamā.
