Puį¹‡į¹‡akamāį¹‡avapucchā The Questions of Puį¹‡į¹‡aka

ā€œAnejaį¹ mÅ«ladassāviį¹, ā€œTo the imperturbable, the seer of the root,ā€

(iccāyasmā puį¹‡į¹‡ako) said Venerable Puį¹‡į¹‡aka,

Atthi paƱhena āgamaį¹; ā€œI have come seeking with a question.

Kiį¹ nissitā isayo manujā, On what grounds have seers and men,

Khattiyā brāhmaį¹‡Ä devatānaį¹; aristocrats and brahmins here in the world

YaƱƱamakappayiį¹su puthÅ«dha loke, performed so many different sacrifices to the gods?

Pucchāmi taį¹ bhagavā brÅ«hi me taį¹ā€. I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.ā€

ā€œYe kecime isayo manujā, ā€œWhatever seers and men,ā€

(puį¹‡į¹‡akāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Khattiyā brāhmaį¹‡Ä devatānaį¹; ā€œaristocrats and brahmins here in the world

YaƱƱamakappayiį¹su puthÅ«dha loke, have performed so many different sacrifices to the gods:

ĀsÄ«samānā puį¹‡į¹‡aka itthattaį¹; all performed sacrifices bound to old age,

Jaraį¹ sitā yaƱƱamakappayiį¹suā€. longing for this place.ā€

ā€œYe kecime isayo manujā, ā€œAs to those seers and men,ā€

(iccāyasmā puį¹‡į¹‡ako) said Venerable Puį¹‡į¹‡aka,

Khattiyā brāhmaį¹‡Ä devatānaį¹; ā€œand aristocrats and brahmins here in the world

YaƱƱamakappayiį¹su puthÅ«dha loke, who have performed so many different sacrifices to the gods:

Kaccissu te bhagavā yaƱƱapathe appamattā; being diligent in the methods of sacrifice,

Atāruį¹ jātiƱca jaraƱca mārisa, have they crossed over rebirth and old age, good fellow?

Pucchāmi taį¹ bhagavā brÅ«hi me taį¹ā€. I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.ā€

ā€œÄ€sÄ«santi thomayanti abhijappanti juhanti, ā€œHoping, invoking, praying, and worshiping,ā€

(puį¹‡į¹‡akāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Kāmābhijappanti paį¹­icca lābhaį¹; ā€œthey pray for pleasure derived from profit.

Te yājayogā bhavarāgarattā, Devoted to sacrifice, besotted by rebirth,

Nātariį¹su jātijaranti brÅ«miā€. theyā€™ve not crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.ā€

ā€œTe ce nātariį¹su yājayogā, ā€œIf those devoted to sacrifice,ā€

(iccāyasmā puį¹‡į¹‡ako) said Venerable Puį¹‡į¹‡aka,

YaƱƱehi jātiƱca jaraƱca mārisa; ā€œhave not, by sacrificing, crossed over rebirth and old age,

Atha ko carahi devamanussaloke, then who exactly in the world of gods and humans

Atāri jātiƱca jaraƱca mārisa; has crossed over rebirth and old age, good fellow?

Pucchāmi taį¹ bhagavā brÅ«hi me taį¹ā€. I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.ā€

ā€œSaį¹…khāya lokasmi paroparāni, ā€œHaving appraised the world high and low,ā€

(puį¹‡į¹‡akāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

YassiƱjitaį¹ natthi kuhiƱci loke; ā€œthere is nothing in the world that disturbs them.

Santo vidhÅ«mo anÄ«gho nirāso, Peaceful, unclouded, untroubled, with no need for hopeā€”

Atāri so jātijaranti brÅ«mÄ«ā€ti. theyā€™ve crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.ā€
