Dhotakamāį¹‡avapucchā The Questions of Dhotaka

ā€œPucchāmi taį¹ bhagavā brÅ«hi metaį¹, ā€œI ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this,ā€

(iccāyasmā dhotako) said Venerable Dhotaka,

Vācābhikaį¹…khāmi mahesi tuyhaį¹; ā€œI long for your voice, great seer.

Tava sutvāna nigghosaį¹, After hearing your message,

Sikkhe nibbānamattanoā€. I shall train myself for extinguishment.ā€

ā€œTenahātappaį¹ karohi, ā€œWell then, be keen, alert,ā€

(dhotakāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Idheva nipako sato; ā€œand mindful right here.

Ito sutvāna nigghosaį¹, After hearing this message, go on

Sikkhe nibbānamattanoā€. and train yourself for extinguishment.ā€

ā€œPassāmahaį¹ devamanussaloke, ā€œI see in the world of gods and humans

AkiƱcanaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡amiriyamānaį¹; a brahmin travelling with nothing.

Taį¹ taį¹ namassāmi samantacakkhu, I bow especially to you, All-seer:

PamuƱca maį¹ sakka kathaį¹…kathāhiā€. release me, Sakyan, from my indecisions.ā€

ā€œNāhaį¹ sahissāmi pamocanāya, ā€œI am not able to release anyone

Kathaį¹…kathiį¹ dhotaka kaƱci loke; in the world who is indecisive, Dhotaka.

DhammaƱca seį¹į¹haį¹ abhijānamāno, But when you understand the best of teachings,

Evaį¹ tuvaį¹ oghamimaį¹ taresiā€. you shall cross this flood.ā€

ā€œAnusāsa brahme karuį¹‡Äyamāno, ā€œTeach me, brahmin, out of compassion,

Vivekadhammaį¹ yamahaį¹ vijaƱƱaį¹; the principle of seclusion so that I may understand.

Yathāhaį¹ ākāsova abyāpajjamāno, I wish to practice right here, peaceful, independent,

Idheva santo asito careyyaį¹ā€. as unbounded as space.ā€

ā€œKittayissāmi te santiį¹, ā€œI shall extol that peace for you,ā€

(dhotakāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Diį¹į¹he dhamme anÄ«tihaį¹; ā€œthat is apparent in the present, not relying on tradition.

Yaį¹ viditvā sato caraį¹, Having understood it, one who lives mindfully

Tare loke visattikaį¹ā€. may cross over clinging in the world.ā€

ā€œTaƱcāhaį¹ abhinandāmi, ā€œAnd I rejoice, great seer,

mahesi santimuttamaį¹; in that supreme peace,

Yaį¹ viditvā sato caraį¹, having understood which, one who lives mindfully

tare loke visattikaį¹ā€. may cross over clinging in the world.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kiƱci sampajānāsi, ā€œOnce you have understood that everything,ā€

(dhotakāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Uddhaį¹ adho tiriyaƱcāpi majjhe; ā€œyou are aware of in the worldā€”

Etaį¹ viditvā saį¹…goti loke, above, below, all round, betweenā€”

Bhavābhavāya mākāsi taį¹‡hanā€ti. is a snare, donā€™t crave for life after life.ā€
