āJiį¹į¹ohamasmi abalo vÄ«tavaį¹į¹o, āI am old, feeble, and pallid,ā
(iccÄyasmÄ piį¹
giyo) said Venerable Piį¹
giya,
NettÄ na suddhÄ savanaį¹ na phÄsu; āmy eyes unclear, my hearing faintā
MÄhaį¹ nassaį¹ momuho antarÄva, donāt let me perish while still confused.
Äcikkha dhammaį¹ yamahaį¹ vijaƱƱaį¹; Explain the teaching so that I may understand
JÄtijarÄya idha vippahÄnaį¹ā. the giving up of rebirth and old age here.ā
āDisvÄna rÅ«pesu vihaƱƱamÄne, āSeeing them harmed on account of forms,ā

giyÄti bhagavÄ) replied the Buddha,
Ruppanti rÅ«pesu janÄ pamattÄ; āon account of forms those negligent folk are afflictedā
TasmÄ tuvaį¹ piį¹
giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹
giya, being diligent,
Jahassu rÅ«paį¹ apunabbhavÄyaā. give up form so as not to be reborn.ā
āDisÄ catasso vidisÄ catasso, āThe four quarters, the intermediate directions,
Uddhaį¹ adho dasa disÄ imÄyo; below, and above: in these ten directions
Na tuyhaį¹ adiį¹į¹haį¹ asutaį¹ amutaį¹, thereās nothing at all in the world
Atho aviƱƱÄtaį¹ kiƱcanamatthi loke; that youāve not seen, heard, thought, or cognized.

āTaį¹hÄdhipanne manuje pekkhamÄno, āObserving people sunk in craving,ā

SantÄpajÄte jarasÄ parete; ātormented, mired in old age;

giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹
giya, being diligent,
Jahassu taį¹haį¹ apunabbhavÄyÄāti. give up craving so as not to be reborn.ā
