Piį¹…giyamāį¹‡avapucchā The Questions of Piį¹…giya

ā€œJiį¹‡į¹‡ohamasmi abalo vÄ«tavaį¹‡į¹‡o, ā€œI am old, feeble, and pallid,ā€

(iccāyasmā piį¹…giyo) said Venerable Piį¹…giya,

Nettā na suddhā savanaį¹ na phāsu; ā€œmy eyes unclear, my hearing faintā€”

Māhaį¹ nassaį¹ momuho antarāva, donā€™t let me perish while still confused.

Ācikkha dhammaį¹ yamahaį¹ vijaƱƱaį¹; Explain the teaching so that I may understand

Jātijarāya idha vippahānaį¹ā€. the giving up of rebirth and old age here.ā€

ā€œDisvāna rÅ«pesu vihaƱƱamāne, ā€œSeeing them harmed on account of forms,ā€

(piį¹…giyāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Ruppanti rÅ«pesu janā pamattā; ā€œon account of forms those negligent folk are afflictedā€”

Tasmā tuvaį¹ piį¹…giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹…giya, being diligent,

Jahassu rÅ«paį¹ apunabbhavāyaā€. give up form so as not to be reborn.ā€

ā€œDisā catasso vidisā catasso, ā€œThe four quarters, the intermediate directions,

Uddhaį¹ adho dasa disā imāyo; below, and above: in these ten directions

Na tuyhaį¹ adiį¹­į¹­haį¹ asutaį¹ amutaį¹, thereā€™s nothing at all in the world

Atho aviƱƱātaį¹ kiƱcanamatthi loke; that youā€™ve not seen, heard, thought, or cognized.

ā€œTaį¹‡hādhipanne manuje pekkhamāno, ā€œObserving people sunk in craving,ā€

(piį¹…giyāti bhagavā) replied the Buddha,

Santāpajāte jarasā parete; ā€œtormented, mired in old age;

Tasmā tuvaį¹ piį¹…giya appamatto, therefore, Piį¹…giya, being diligent,

Jahassu taį¹‡haį¹ apunabbhavāyāā€ti. give up craving so as not to be reborn.ā€
