Gayākassapattheragāthā Gayākassapa

ā€œPāto majjhanhikaį¹ sāyaį¹, Three times a dayā€”

tikkhattuį¹ divasassahaį¹; morning, midday, and eveningā€”

Otariį¹ udakaį¹ sohaį¹, I plunged into the water at Gayā

gayāya gayaphagguyā. for the Gayā spring festival.

ā€˜Yaį¹ mayā pakataį¹ pāpaį¹, ā€œAny bad things Iā€™ve done

pubbe aƱƱāsu jātisu; in previous lives,

Taį¹ dānÄ«dha pavāhemiā€™, Iā€™ll now wash away right hereā€ā€”

evaį¹diį¹­į¹­hi pure ahuį¹. such was the view I used to hold.

Sutvā subhāsitaį¹ vācaį¹, Having heard the fine words,

dhammatthasahitaį¹ padaį¹; a passage meaningful and principled,

Tathaį¹ yāthāvakaį¹ atthaį¹, I rationally reflected

yoniso paccavekkhisaį¹. on the true, essential goal.

Ninhātasabbapāpomhi, Iā€™ve washed away all bad things;

nimmalo payato suci; Iā€™m stainless, clean, pristine;

Suddho suddhassa dāyādo, the pure heir of the pure one,

putto buddhassa oraso. a true-born son of the Buddha.

Ogayhaį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikaį¹ sotaį¹, When I plunged into the eightfold stream,

sabbapāpaį¹ pavāhayiį¹; all bad things were washed away.

Tisso vijjā ajjhagamiį¹, Iā€™ve attained the three knowledges

kataį¹ buddhassa sāsananā€ti. and fulfilled the Buddhaā€™s instructions.
