āYadÄ navo pabbajito, I was only seven years old
jÄtiyÄ sattavassiko; and had just gone forth
IddhiyÄ abhibhotvÄna, when I overcame the mighty serpent king
pannagindaį¹ mahiddhikaį¹. with my psychic powers.
UpajjhÄyassa udakaį¹, I brought water for my mentor
anotattÄ mahÄsarÄ; from the great lake Anotatta.
ÄharÄmi tato disvÄ, When he saw me,
maį¹ satthÄ etadabraviā. my teacher declared:
āSÄriputta imaį¹ passa, āSÄriputta, see this
Ägacchantaį¹ kumÄrakaį¹; young boy coming,
UdakakumbhamÄdÄya, carrying a water pot,
ajjhattaį¹ susamÄhitaį¹. serene inside himself.
PÄsÄdikena vattena, His conduct inspires confidence,
kalyÄį¹airiyÄpatho; he is of lovely deportment:
SÄmaį¹eronuruddhassa, he is Anuruddhaās novice,
iddhiyÄ ca visÄrado. assured in psychic powers.
ÄjÄnÄ«yena ÄjaƱƱo, Made a thoroughbred by a thoroughbred,
sÄdhunÄ sÄdhukÄrito; made good by the good,
Vinīto anuruddhena, educated and trained by Anuruddha,
katakiccena sikkhito. who has completed his task.
So patvÄ paramaį¹ santiį¹, Having attained ultimate peace
sacchikatvÄ akuppataį¹; and witnessed the unshakable,
SÄmaį¹ero sa sumano, that novice Sumana has the wish:
mÄ maį¹ jaƱƱÄti icchatÄ«āti. āMay no-one find me out!āā
