Sattakanipāta The Book of the Sevens

Paį¹­hamavagga Chapter One

Bhaddattheragāthā Bhadda

ā€œEkaputto ahaį¹ āsiį¹, I was an only child,

piyo mātu piyo pitu; loved by my mother and father.

Bahūhi vatacariyāhi, They had me by practicing

laddho āyācanāhi ca. many prayers and observances.

Te ca maį¹ anukampāya, Out of sympathy for me

atthakāmā hitesino; wishing me well and wanting the best for me,

Ubho pitā ca mātā ca, my mother and father

buddhassa upanāmayuį¹. took me to see the Buddha.

ā€˜Kicchā laddho ayaį¹ putto, ā€œWe had this son with difficulty;

sukhumālo sukhedhito; he is delicate and dainty.

Imaį¹ dadāma te nātha, We offer him to you, Lord,

jinassa paricārakaį¹ā€™. to attend upon the victor.ā€

Satthā ca maį¹ paį¹­iggayha, The teacher, having accepted me,

ānandaį¹ etadabravi; declared to Ānanda:

ā€˜Pabbājehi imaį¹ khippaį¹, ā€œQuickly give him the going-forthā€”

hessatyājāniyo ayaį¹ā€™. this one will be a thoroughbred!ā€

Pabbājetvāna maį¹ satthā, After he, the teacher, had sent me forth,

vihāraį¹ pāvisÄ« jino; the victor entered his dwelling.

Anoggatasmiį¹ sÅ«riyasmiį¹, Before the sun set

tato cittaį¹ vimucci me. my mind was freed.

Tato satthā nirākatvā, The teacher didnā€™t neglect me;

paį¹­isallānavuį¹­į¹­hito; when he came out from seclusion,

ā€˜Ehi bhaddāā€™ti maį¹ āha, he said: ā€œCome Bhadda!ā€

sā me āsūpasampadā. That was my ordination.

Jātiyā sattavassena, At seven years old

laddhā me upasampadā; I received ordination.

Tisso vijjā anuppattā, Iā€™ve attained the three knowledges;

aho dhammasudhammatāā€ti. oh, the excellence of the teaching!
