BhaddattheragÄthÄ Bhadda
āEkaputto ahaį¹ Äsiį¹, I was an only child,
piyo mÄtu piyo pitu; loved by my mother and father.
BahÅ«hi vatacariyÄhi, They had me by practicing
laddho ÄyÄcanÄhi ca. many prayers and observances.
Te ca maį¹ anukampÄya, Out of sympathy for me
atthakÄmÄ hitesino; wishing me well and wanting the best for me,
Ubho pitÄ ca mÄtÄ ca, my mother and father
buddhassa upanÄmayuį¹. took me to see the Buddha.
āKicchÄ laddho ayaį¹ putto, āWe had this son with difficulty;
sukhumÄlo sukhedhito; he is delicate and dainty.
Imaį¹ dadÄma te nÄtha, We offer him to you, Lord,
jinassa paricÄrakaį¹ā. to attend upon the victor.ā
SatthÄ ca maį¹ paį¹iggayha, The teacher, having accepted me,
Änandaį¹ etadabravi; declared to Änanda:
āPabbÄjehi imaį¹ khippaį¹, āQuickly give him the going-forthā
hessatyÄjÄniyo ayaį¹ā. this one will be a thoroughbred!ā
PabbÄjetvÄna maį¹ satthÄ, After he, the teacher, had sent me forth,
vihÄraį¹ pÄvisÄ« jino; the victor entered his dwelling.
Anoggatasmiį¹ sÅ«riyasmiį¹, Before the sun set
tato cittaį¹ vimucci me. my mind was freed.
Tato satthÄ nirÄkatvÄ, The teacher didnāt neglect me;
paį¹isallÄnavuį¹į¹hito; when he came out from seclusion,
āEhi bhaddÄāti maį¹ Äha, he said: āCome Bhadda!ā
sÄ me ÄsÅ«pasampadÄ. That was my ordination.
JÄtiyÄ sattavassena, At seven years old
laddhÄ me upasampadÄ; I received ordination.
Tisso vijjÄ anuppattÄ, Iāve attained the three knowledges;
aho dhammasudhammatÄāti. oh, the excellence of the teaching!
