Paį¹­hamavagga Chapter One

Sarabhaį¹…gattheragāthā Sarabhaį¹…ga

ā€œSare hatthehi bhaƱjitvā, I broke the reeds off with my hands,

katvāna kuį¹­imacchisaį¹; made a hut, and stayed there.

Tena me sarabhaį¹…goti, Thatā€™s how I became known

nāmaį¹ sammutiyā ahu. as ā€œReed-breakerā€.

Na mayhaį¹ kappate ajja, But now itā€™s not appropriate

sare hatthehi bhaƱjituį¹; for me to break reeds with my hands.

Sikkhāpadā no paƱƱattā, The training rules have been laid down for us

gotamena yasassinā. by Gotama the renowned.

Sakalaį¹ samattaį¹ rogaį¹, Previously, I, Sarabhaį¹…ga,

Sarabhaį¹…go nāddasaį¹ pubbe; didnā€™t see the disease in its entirety.

Soyaį¹ rogo diį¹­į¹­ho, But now I have seen the disease,

Vacanakarenātidevassa. as Iā€™ve practiced what was taught by he who is beyond the gods.

Yeneva maggena gato vipassī, Gotama traveled by that direct route;

Yeneva maggena sikhī ca vessabhū; the same path traveled by Vipassī,

Kakusandhakoį¹‡Ägamano ca kassapo, by SikhÄ«, VessabhÅ«,

TenaƱjasena agamāsi gotamo. Kakusandha, Koį¹‡Ägamana, and Kassapa.

VÄ«tataį¹‡hā anādānā, These seven Buddhas have plunged into the ending,

satta buddhā khayogadhā; free of craving, without grasping,

Yehāyaį¹ desito dhammo, having become Dhamma, unaffected.

dhammabhūtehi tādibhi. They have taught this Dhamma

Cattāri ariyasaccāni, out of compassion for living creaturesā€”

anukampāya pāį¹‡inaį¹; suffering, origin, path,

Dukkhaį¹ samudayo maggo, and cessation, the ending of suffering.

nirodho dukkhasaį¹…khayo. In these four noble truths,

Yasmiį¹ nivattate dukkhaį¹, the endless suffering of transmigration

saį¹sārasmiį¹ anantakaį¹; finally comes to an end.

Bhedā imassa kāyassa, When the body breaks up,

jÄ«vitassa ca saį¹…khayā; and life comes to an end,

AƱƱo punabbhavo natthi, there are no future lives;

suvimuttomhi sabbadhÄ«ā€ti. Iā€™m everywhere well freed.

Sattakanipāto niį¹­į¹­hito.

Tatruddānaį¹

Sundarasamuddo thero,

thero lakuį¹‡įøabhaddiyo;

Bhaddo thero ca sopāko,

sarabhaį¹…go mahāisi;

Sattake paƱcakā therā,

gāthāyo paƱcatiį¹satÄ«ti.
