Paį¹­hamavagga Chapter One

Mahākappinattheragāthā Mahākappina

ā€œAnāgataį¹ yo paį¹­ikacca passati, If youā€™re prepared for the future,

HitaƱca atthaį¹ ahitaƱca taį¹ dvayaį¹; both the good and the bad,

Viddesino tassa hitesino vā, then those, whether enemies or well-wishers,

Randhaį¹ na passanti samekkhamānā. who examine you for weakness will see none.

Ānāpānasatī yassa, One who has fulfilled, developed,

paripuį¹‡į¹‡Ä subhāvitā; and gradually consolidated

Anupubbaį¹ paricitā, mindfulness of breathing

yathā buddhena desitā; as it was taught by the Buddha:

Somaį¹ lokaį¹ pabhāseti, they light up the world,

abbhā muttova candimā. like the moon freed from clouds.

Odātaį¹ vata me cittaį¹, Yes, my mind is clean,

appamāį¹‡aį¹ subhāvitaį¹; limitless and well-developed;

Nibbiddhaį¹ paggahÄ«taƱca, it has broken through and been upliftedā€”

sabbā obhāsate disā. it radiates in every direction.

Jīvate vāpi sappaƱƱo, A wise person lives on

api vittaparikkhayo; even after loss of wealth;

PaƱƱāya ca alābhena, but without gaining wisdom,

vittavāpi na jÄ«vati. even a rich person doesnā€™t really live.

PaƱƱā sutavinicchinī, Wisdom questions what is learned;

PaƱƱā kittisilokavaddhanī; wisdom grows fame and reputation;

PaƱƱāsahito naro idha, a person who has wisdom

Api dukkhesu sukhāni vindati. finds happiness even among sufferings.

Nāyaį¹ ajjatano dhammo, Itā€™s not a teaching just for today;

nacchero napi abbhuto; it isnā€™t incredible or amazing.

Yattha jāyetha mÄ«yetha, When youā€™re born, you dieā€”

tattha kiį¹ viya abbhutaį¹. whatā€™s amazing about that?

Anantaraį¹ hi jātassa, For anyone who is born,

jÄ«vitā maraį¹‡aį¹ dhuvaį¹; death always follows after life.

Jātā jātā marantīdha, Everyone who is born here dies here;

evaį¹dhammā hi pāį¹‡ino. such is the nature of living creatures.

Na hetadatthāya matassa hoti, The things that are useful for the living

Yaį¹ jÄ«vitatthaį¹ paraporisānaį¹; are of no use for the deadā€”not fame, not celebrity,

Matamhi ruį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ na yaso na lokyaį¹, not praise by ascetics and brahmins.

Na vaį¹‡į¹‡itaį¹ samaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡ehi. For the dead, there is only weeping.

Cakkhuį¹ sarÄ«raį¹ upahanti tena, And weeping impairs the eye and the body;

NihÄ«yati vaį¹‡į¹‡abalaį¹ matÄ« ca; complexion, strength, and intelligence decline.

Ānandino tassa disā bhavanti, Your enemies rejoice;

Hitesino nāssa sukhī bhavanti. but your well-wishers are not happy.

Tasmā hi iccheyya kule vasante, So you should wish that those who stay in your family

Medhāvino ceva bahussute ca; have intelligence and learning,

Yesaį¹ hi paƱƱāvibhavena kiccaį¹, and do their duty through the power of wisdom,

Taranti nāvāya nadiį¹va puį¹‡į¹‡anā€ti. just as youā€™d cross a full river by boat.
