Sīlavattheragāthā Sīlava

ā€œSÄ«lamevidha sikkhetha, One should train just in ethical conduct,

asmiį¹ loke susikkhitaį¹; for in this world, when ethical conduct is

SÄ«laƱhi sabbasampattiį¹, cultivated and well-trained,

upanāmeti sevitaį¹. it provides all success.

SÄ«laį¹ rakkheyya medhāvÄ«, Wishing for three kinds of happinessā€”

patthayāno tayo sukhe; praise, prosperity,

Pasaį¹saį¹ vittilābhaƱca, and to delight in heaven after passing awayā€”

pecca sagge pamodanaį¹. the wise would take care of their ethics.

Sīlavā hi bahū mitte, The well-behaved have many friends,

saƱƱamenādhigacchati; because of their self-restraint.

Dussīlo pana mittehi, But one lacking ethics, of bad conduct,

dhaį¹sate pāpamācaraį¹. drives away their friends.

Avaį¹‡į¹‡aƱca akittiƱca, A person whose ethics are bad has

dussīlo labhate naro; ill-repute and infamy.

Vaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ kittiį¹ pasaį¹saƱca, A person whose conduct is ethical always has

sadā labhati sīlavā. a good reputation, fame, and praise.

Ādi sÄ«laį¹ patiį¹­į¹­hā ca, Ethical conduct is the starting point and foundation;

kalyāį¹‡ÄnaƱca mātukaį¹; the mother at the head

Pamukhaį¹ sabbadhammānaį¹, of all good things:

tasmā sÄ«laį¹ visodhaye. thatā€™s why you should purify your ethics.

Velā ca saį¹varaį¹ sÄ«laį¹, Ethics provide a boundary and a restraint,

cittassa abhihāsanaį¹; an enjoyment for the mind;

TitthaƱca sabbabuddhānaį¹, the ford where all the Buddhas cross over:

tasmā sÄ«laį¹ visodhaye. thatā€™s why you should purify your ethics.

SÄ«laį¹ balaį¹ appaį¹­imaį¹, Ethics are the matchless power;

sÄ«laį¹ āvudhamuttamaį¹; ethics are the ultimate weapon;

SÄ«lamābharaį¹‡aį¹ seį¹­į¹­haį¹, ethics are the best ornament;

sÄ«laį¹ kavacamabbhutaį¹. ethics are a marvelous coat of armor.

SÄ«laį¹ setu mahesakkho, Ethics are a mighty bridge;

sÄ«laį¹ gandho anuttaro; ethics are the unsurpassed scent;

SÄ«laį¹ vilepanaį¹ seį¹­į¹­haį¹, ethics are the best perfume,

yena vāti disodisaį¹. that float from place to place.

SÄ«laį¹ sambalamevaggaį¹, Ethics are the best provision;

sÄ«laį¹ pātheyyamuttamaį¹; ethics are the unsurpassed supply for a journey;

SÄ«laį¹ seį¹­į¹­ho ativāho, ethics are the best vehicle

yena yāti disodisaį¹. that take you from place to place.

Idheva nindaį¹ labhati, In this life theyā€™re criticized;

peccāpāye ca dummano; after departing they grieve in a lower realm;

Sabbattha dummano bālo, a fool is unhappy everywhere,

sīlesu asamāhito. because they are unsteady in ethics.

Idheva kittiį¹ labhati, In this life theyā€™re renowned;

pecca sagge ca summano; after departing theyā€™re happy in heaven;

Sabbattha sumano dhīro, the attentive are happy everywhere,

sīlesu susamāhito. because they are steady in ethics.

SÄ«lameva idha aggaį¹, Ethical conduct is best in this life,

paƱƱavā pana uttamo; but one with wisdom is supreme.

Manussesu ca devesu, Someone with both virtue and wisdom

sÄ«lapaƱƱāį¹‡ato jayanā€ti. is victorious among men and gods.
