Selattheragāthā Sela

ā€œParipuį¹‡į¹‡akāyo suruci, ā€œO Blessed One, your bodyā€™s perfect,

Sujāto cārudassano; youā€™re radiant, handsome, lovely to behold;

Suvaį¹‡į¹‡avaį¹‡į¹‡osi bhagavā, golden colored,

Susukkadāį¹­hosi vÄ«riyavā. with teeth so white; youā€™re strong.

Narassa hi sujātassa, The characteristics

ye bhavanti viyaƱjanā; of a handsome man,

Sabbe te tava kāyasmiį¹, the marks of a great man,

mahāpurisalakkhaį¹‡Ä. are all found on your body.

Pasannanetto sumukho, Your eyes are clear, your face is fair,

brahā uju patāpavā; youā€™re formidable, sincere, majestic.

Majjhe samaį¹‡asaį¹…ghassa, In the midst of the Saį¹…gha of ascetics,

ādiccova virocasi. you shine like the sun.

Kalyāį¹‡adassano bhikkhu, Youā€™re a mendicant fine to see,

kaƱcanasannibhattaco; with skin that shines like lustrous gold.

Kiį¹ te samaį¹‡abhāvena, But with such excellent appearance,

evaį¹ uttamavaį¹‡į¹‡ino. what do you want with the ascetic life?

Rājā arahasi bhavituį¹, Youā€™re fit to be a king,

cakkavattī rathesabho; a wheel-turning monarch, chief of charioteers,

Cāturanto vijitāvī, victorious in the four quarters,

jambusaį¹‡įøassa issaro. lord of the Black Plum Tree Land.

Khattiyā bhogī rājāno, Aristocrats, nobles, and kings

anuyantā bhavanti te; ought follow your rule.

Rājābhirājā manujindo, Gotama, you should reign

rajjaį¹ kārehi gotamaā€. as king of kings, lord of men!ā€

ā€œRājāhamasmi sela, ā€œI am a king, Selaā€,

(selāti bhagavā) said the Buddha to Sela,

Dhammarājā anuttaro; ā€œthe supreme king of the teaching.

Dhammena cakkaį¹ vattemi, By the teaching I roll forth the wheel

Cakkaį¹ appaį¹­ivattiyaį¹ā€. which cannot be rolled back.ā€

ā€œSambuddho paį¹­ijānāsi, ā€œYou claim to be awakened,ā€

(iti selo brāhmaį¹‡o) said Sela the brahmin,

Dhammarājā anuttaro; ā€œthe supreme king of the teaching.

ā€˜Dhammena cakkaį¹ vattemiā€™, ā€˜I roll forth the teachingā€™:

Iti bhāsatha gotama. so you say, Gotama.

Ko nu senāpati bhoto, Then who is your general,

sāvako satthuranvayo; the disciple who follows the Teacherā€™s way?

Ko tetamanuvatteti, Who keeps rolling the wheel

dhammacakkaį¹ pavattitaį¹ā€. of the teaching you rolled forth?ā€

ā€œMayā pavattitaį¹ cakkaį¹, ā€œBy me the wheel was rolled forth,ā€

(selāti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Dhammacakkaį¹ anuttaraį¹; ā€œthe supreme wheel of the teaching.

Sāriputto anuvatteti, Sāriputta, taking after the Realized One,

Anujāto tathāgataį¹. keeps it rolling on.

AbhiƱƱeyyaį¹ abhiƱƱātaį¹, I have known what should be known,

bhāvetabbaƱca bhāvitaį¹; and developed what should be developed,

Pahātabbaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ me, and given up what should be given up:

tasmā buddhosmi brāhmaį¹‡a. and so, brahmin, I am a Buddha.

Vinayassu mayi kaį¹…khaį¹, Dispel your doubt in meā€”

adhimuccassu brāhmaį¹‡a; make up your mind, brahmin!

Dullabhaį¹ dassanaį¹ hoti, The sight of a Buddha

sambuddhānaį¹ abhiį¹‡haso. is hard to find again.

Yesaį¹ ve dullabho loke, I am a Buddha, brahmin,

pātubhāvo abhiį¹‡haso; the supreme surgeon,

Sohaį¹ brāhmaį¹‡a buddhosmi, one of those whose appearance in the world

sallakatto anuttaro. is hard to find again.

Brahmabhūto atitulo, A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,

mārasenappamaddano; crusher of Māraā€™s army;

Sabbāmitte vase katvā, having subdued all my opponents,

modāmi akutobhayoā€. I rejoice, fearing nothing from any quarter.ā€

ā€œIdaį¹ bhonto nisāmetha, ā€œPay heed, sirs, to what

yathā bhāsati cakkhumā; is spoken by the Clear-eyed One.

Sallakatto mahāvīro, The surgeon, the great hero,

sīhova nadatī vane. roars like a lion in the jungle.

BrahmabhÅ«taį¹ atitulaį¹, A manifestation of divinity, unequaled,

mārasenappamaddanaį¹; crusher of Māraā€™s army;

Ko disvā nappasīdeyya, who would not be inspired by him,

api kaį¹‡hābhijātiko. even one born in a dark class?

Yo maį¹ icchati anvetu, Those who wish may follow me;

yo vā nicchati gacchatu; those who donā€™t may go.

Idhāhaį¹ pabbajissāmi, Right here, Iā€™ll go forth in his presence,

varapaƱƱassa santikeā€. the one of such splendid wisdom.ā€

ā€œEtaƱce ruccati bhoto, ā€œSir, if you endorse

sammāsambuddhasāsanaį¹; the teaching of the Buddha,

Mayampi pabbajissāma, weā€™ll also go forth in his presence,

varapaƱƱassa santikeā€. the one of such splendid wisdom.ā€

ā€œBrāhmaį¹‡Ä tisatā ime, ā€œThese three hundred brahmins

yācanti paƱjalīkatā; with joined palms held up, ask:

ā€˜Brahmacariyaį¹ carissāma, ā€˜May we lead the spiritual life

bhagavā tava santikeā€™ā€. in your presence, Blessed One?ā€™ā€

ā€œSvākkhātaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, ā€œThe spiritual life is well explained,ā€

(selāti bhagavā) said the Buddha,

Sandiį¹­į¹­hikamakālikaį¹; ā€œapparent in the present life, immediately effective.

Yattha amoghā pabbajjā, Here the going forth isnā€™t in vain

Appamattassa sikkhatoā€. for one who trains with diligence.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ taį¹ saraį¹‡amāgamha, ā€œThis is the eighth day since

ito aį¹­į¹­hame cakkhuma; we went for refuge, O Clear-eyed One.

Sattarattena bhagavā, In these seven days, Blessed One,

dantāmha tava sāsane. weā€™ve become tamed in your teaching.

Tuvaį¹ buddho tuvaį¹ satthā, You are the Buddha, you are the Teacher,

tuvaį¹ mārābhibhÅ« muni; you are the sage who has overcome Māra;

Tuvaį¹ anusaye chetvā, you have cut off the underlying tendencies,

tiį¹‡į¹‡o tāresimaį¹ pajaį¹. youā€™ve crossed over, and you bring humanity across.

Upadhī te samatikkantā, You have transcended attachments,

āsavā te padālitā; your defilements are shattered;

Sīhova anupādāno, by not grasping, like a lion,

pahÄ«nabhayabheravo. youā€™ve given up fear and dread.

Bhikkhavo tisatā ime, These three hundred mendicants

tiį¹­į¹­hanti paƱjalÄ«katā; stand with joined palms raised.

Pāde vīra pasārehi, Stretch out your feet, great hero:

nāgā vandantu satthunoā€ti. let these giants bow to the Teacher.ā€
