Uttamātherīgāthā Verses of the Elder Uttamā Uttamā

ā€œCatukkhattuį¹ paƱcakkhattuį¹, ā€œFour times, five times, Four or five times

vihārā upanikkhamiį¹; I went outside. I left my dwelling.

Aladdhā cetaso santiį¹, I had not attained peace of mind I had failed to find peace of heart,

citte avasavattinī. and I had no power over the mind. or any control over my mind.

Sā bhikkhuniį¹ upagacchiį¹, I approached a bhikkhunÄ« I approached a nun

yā me saddhāyikā ahu; whom I trusted. in whom I had faith.

Sā me dhammamadesesi, She taught me the Dhamma: She taught me the Dhamma:

khandhāyatanadhātuyo. the khandhas, elements, and sense domains. the aggregates, sense fields, and elements.

Tassā dhammaį¹ suį¹‡itvāna, I listened to her Dhamma, When I had heard her teaching,

Yathā maį¹ anusāsi sā; followed her instructions, in accordance with her instructions,

Sattāhaį¹ ekapallaį¹…kena, and sat cross-legged for seven days, I sat cross-legged for seven days without moving,

NisÄ«diį¹ pÄ«tisukhasamappitā; dedicated to bliss and happiness. given over to rapture and bliss.

Aį¹­į¹­hamiyā pāde pasāresiį¹, On the eighth day I stretched out my feet, On the eighth day I stretched out my feet,

Tamokhandhaį¹ padāliyāā€ti. having destroyed this mass of darkness.ā€ having shattered the mass of darkness.
