Bhaddākāpilānītherīgāthā Verses of the Elder Bhaddā Kāpilānī Bhaddā Daughter of Kapila

ā€œPutto buddhassa dāyādo, ā€œKassapa, son and heir of the Buddha, Kassapa is the son and heir of the Buddha,

kassapo susamāhito; has a well-collected mind. whose mind is immersed in samādhi.

Pubbenivāsaį¹ yovedi, He knows his past lives, He who knows his past lives,

saggāpāyaƱca passati. he sees heaven and hell. sees heaven and places of loss,

Atho jātikkhayaį¹ patto, He has reached the destruction of birth; and has attained the end of rebirth:

abhiƱƱāvosito muni; he is an accomplished sage with perfect insight. is a sage of perfect insight.

Etāhi tÄ«hi vijjāhi, He is a a brahmin Itā€™s because of these three knowledges

tevijjo hoti brāhmaį¹‡o. who possesses the three knowledges. that the brahmin is a master of the three knowledges.

Tatheva bhaddā kāpilānī, In the same way Bhaddā Kāpilānī In exactly the same way, Bhaddā daughter of Kapila

tevijjā maccuhāyinī; possesses the three knowledges, has left behind death, is master of the three knowledges, conqueror of death.

Dhāreti antimaį¹ dehaį¹, and carries her last body, She bears her final body,

jetvā māraį¹ savāhiniį¹. having conquered Māra and his army. having vanquished Māra and his mount.

Disvā ādÄ«navaį¹ loke, Having seen the danger in the world, Seeing the danger of the world,

ubho pabbajitā mayaį¹; we both went forth. both of us went forth.

Tyamha khÄ«į¹‡Äsavā dantā, We have exhausted and tamed all the influences; Now we are tamed, our defilements have ended;

sÄ«tibhÅ«tamha nibbutāā€ti. we have become cool and quenched.ā€ weā€™ve become cooled and quenched.
