Paį¹­ÄcārātherÄ«gāthā Verses of the Elder Paį¹­Äcārā Paį¹­Äcārā

ā€œNaį¹…galehi kasaį¹ khettaį¹, ā€œYoung men plough the field, Plowing the fields,

bÄ«jāni pavapaį¹ chamā; sowing seeds in the earth. sowing seeds in the ground,

Puttadārāni posentā, As they nourish wife and children, providing for partners and children,

dhanaį¹ vindanti māį¹‡avā. young men prosper. young men acquire wealth.

Kimahaį¹ sÄ«lasampannā, I have perfect morality, I am accomplished in ethics,

satthusāsanakārikā; I follow the teaching of the Teacher, and I do the Teacherā€™s bidding,

Nibbānaį¹ nādhigacchāmi, I am not lazy nor conceited, being neither lazy nor restlessā€”

akusītā anuddhatā. so why have I not attained Nirvana? why then do I not achieve quenching?

Pāde pakkhālayitvāna, After washing my feet, Having washed my feet,

udakesu karomahaį¹; I observed the water I took note of the water,

PādodakaƱca disvāna, flowing seeing the foot-washing water

thalato ninnamāgataį¹. downhill. flowing from high ground to low.

Tato cittaį¹ samādhesiį¹, From there I sought one-pointedness of mind, My mind became serene,

assaį¹ bhadraį¹vajāniyaį¹; like a good thoroughbred horse. like a fine thoroughbred steed.

Tato dÄ«paį¹ gahetvāna, Later, I took the lamp, Then, taking a lamp,

vihāraį¹ pāvisiį¹ ahaį¹; and entered my dwelling. I entered my dwelling,

Seyyaį¹ olokayitvāna, I checked the bed inspected the bed,

maƱcakamhi upāvisiį¹. and took a seat on a mat. and sat on my cot.

Tato sÅ«ciį¹ gahetvāna, I took the needle Then, grabbing the pin,

vaį¹­į¹­iį¹ okassayāmahaį¹; and pulled out the wick. I drew out the wick.

PadÄ«passeva nibbānaį¹, The emancipation of my mind The liberation of my heart

vimokkho ahu cetasoā€ti. was like the extinguishing of a lamp.ā€ was like the quenching of the lamp.
