Vāseį¹­į¹­hÄ«therÄ«gāthā Verses of the Elder Vāseį¹­į¹­hi Vāseį¹­į¹­hÄ«

ā€œPuttasokenahaį¹ aį¹­į¹­Ä, ā€œWhen I lost my child I was taken over by grief; Struck down with grief for my son,

khittacittā visaƱƱinī; I went deranged, I lost my mind. deranged, out of my mind,

Naggā pakiį¹‡į¹‡akesÄ« ca, Naked and with disheveled hair, naked, my hair flying,

tena tena vicārihaį¹. I wandered here and there, I wandered here and there.

VÄ«thi saį¹…kārakÅ«į¹­esu, living in middens, I lived on rubbish heaps,

susāne rathiyāsu ca; roadsides, and cemeteries. in cemeteries and highways.

Acariį¹ tÄ«į¹‡i vassāni, I wandered for three years, For three years I wandered,

khuppipāsāsamappitā. afflicted by hunger and thirst. stricken by hunger and thirst.

Athaddasāsiį¹ sugataį¹, When I arrived at the town of Mithilā, Then I saw the Holy One

nagaraį¹ mithilaį¹ pati; and I saw the one who fares well - back at the city of Mithilā.

Adantānaį¹ dametāraį¹, tamer of the untamed, Tamer of the untamed,

sambuddhamakutobhayaį¹. the self-enlightened one, fearless everywhere - the Awakened One fears nothing from any quarter.

Sacittaį¹ paį¹­iladdhāna, I returned to sanity. Regaining my mind,

vanditvāna upāvisiį¹; I paid respects and sat down. I paid homage and sat down.

So me dhammamadesesi, Gotama taught me the Dhamma Out of compassion

anukampāya gotamo. out of compassion. Gotama taught me the Dhamma.

Tassa dhammaį¹ suį¹‡itvāna, After I heard his Dhamma, After hearing his teaching,

pabbajiį¹ anagāriyaį¹; I went forth into homelessness. I went forth to homelessness.

YuƱjantÄ« satthuvacane, I bound myself to the words of the Teacher; Applying myself to the Teacherā€™s words,

sacchākāsiį¹ padaį¹ sivaį¹. I realized the path of joy. I realized the state of grace.

Sabbe sokā samucchinnā, All woes have been cut off, All sorrows are cut off,

pahīnā etadantikā; abandoned, finished. given up, they end here.

PariƱƱātā hi me vatthÅ«, Now I have fully understood Iā€™ve fully understood the basis

yato sokāna sambhavoā€ti. how grief comes into being.ā€ from which grief comes to be.
