āCatukkhattuį¹ paƱcakkhattuį¹, āFour times, five times, Four or five times
vihÄrÄ upanikkhamiį¹; I went outside, I left my dwelling;
AladdhÄ cetaso santiį¹, I had not attained peace of mind, I had failed to find peace of heart,
citte avasavattinī. and I had no power over the mind. or any control over my mind.
Bhikkhuniį¹ upasaį¹
kamma, I approached a bhikkhunī, I approached a nun
sakkaccaį¹ paripucchahaį¹; and respectfully asked questions. and politely questioned her.
SÄ me dhammamadesesi, She taught me the Dhamma: She taught me the Dhamma:
dhÄtuÄyatanÄni ca. the elements, the sense domains, the elements and sense fields,
CattÄri ariyasaccÄni, the Four Noble Truths, the four noble truths,
indriyÄni balÄni ca; the faculties, the powers, the faculties and the powers,

gikaį¹ maggaį¹, the enlightenment factors, and the Eightfold Path, the awakening factors, and the eightfold path
uttamatthassa pattiyÄ. for the attainment of the highest aim. for the attainment of the highest goal.
TassÄhaį¹ vacanaį¹ sutvÄ, I heard and After hearing her words,
karontÄ« anusÄsaniį¹; followed her instructions. I did her bidding.
RattiyÄ purime yÄme, In the first watch of the night, In the first watch of the night,
pubbajÄtimanussariį¹. I remembered my previous lives. I recollected my past lives.
RattiyÄ majjhime yÄme, In the second watch of the night, In the middle watch of the night,
dibbacakkhuį¹ visodhayiį¹; I purified the divine eye. I purified my clairvoyance.
RattiyÄ pacchime yÄme, In the third watch of the night, In the last watch of the night,
tamokhandhaį¹ padÄlayiį¹. I destroyed this mass of darkness. I shattered the mass of darkness.
PÄ«tisukhena ca kÄyaį¹, Then I dwelled permeating the body I then meditated pervading my body
PharitvÄ vihariį¹ tadÄ; with bliss and happiness. with rapture and bliss.
SattamiyÄ pÄde pasÄresiį¹, On the seventh day I stretched out my feet, On the seventh day I stretched out my feet,
Tamokhandhaį¹ padÄliyÄāti. I destroyed this mass of darkness.ā having shattered the mass of darkness.
