Uttarātherīgāthā Verses of the Elder Uttarā Uttarā (2nd)

ā€œMusalāni gahetvāna, ā€œWith a pestle, ā€œTaking a pestle,

dhaƱƱaį¹ koį¹­į¹­enti māį¹‡avā; young men pound grain. young men pound grain.

Puttadārāni posentā, As they nourish wife and children, Providing for partners and children,

dhanaį¹ vindanti māį¹‡avā. young men prosper. young men acquire wealth.

Ghaį¹­etha buddhasāsane, Work your way through the teaching of the Buddha, Work at the Buddhaā€™s bidding,

yaį¹ katvā nānutappati; and you will have no regrets. you wonā€™t regret it.

Khippaį¹ pādāni dhovitvā, Quickly wash your feet, Having quickly washed your feet,

ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«datha. and sit down to one side. sit in a discreet place to meditate.

Cittaį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvāna, Once the mind Establish the mind,

ekaggaį¹ susamāhitaį¹; is well-collected and one-pointed, unified and serene.

Paccavekkhatha saį¹…khāre, review all formations Examine conditions

parato no ca attatoā€. as alien, and not as yourself.ā€ as other, not as self.ā€

ā€œTassāhaį¹ vacanaį¹ sutvā, ā€œUpon hearing these words, ā€œAfter hearing her words,

paį¹­Äcārānusāsaniį¹; the instructions of Paį¹­Äcārā, the instructions of Paį¹­Äcārā,

Pāde pakkhālayitvāna, I washed my feet, I washed my feet

ekamante upāvisiį¹. and sat down to one side. and retired to a discreet place.

Rattiyā purime yāme, In the first watch of the night, In the first watch of the night,

pubbajātimanussariį¹; I remembered my previous lives. I recollected my past lives.

Rattiyā majjhime yāme, In the second watch of the night, In the middle watch of the night,

dibbacakkhuį¹ visodhayiį¹. I purified the divine eye. I purified my clairvoyance.

Rattiyā pacchime yāme, In the third watch of the night, In the last watch of the night,

tamokhandhaį¹ padālayiį¹; I destroyed this mass of darkness. I shattered the mass of darkness.

Tevijjā atha vuį¹­į¹­hāsiį¹, I emerged from that possessing the three knowledges: I rose up master of the three knowledges:

katā te anusāsanī. I did as you instructed. your bidding has been done.

Sakkaį¹va devā tidasā, I now possess the three knowledges and am free from influences, I shall abide honoring you

saį¹…gāme aparājitaį¹; and will dwell revering you as the thirty gods honor Sakka,

Purakkhatvā vihassāmi, just as the thirty Devas honor Indra, undefeated in battle.

tevijjāmhi anāsavāā€. unconquered in battle.ā€ Master of the three knowledges, I am free of defilements.ā€
