ā€œā€˜Samaį¹‡Äā€™ti bhoti supi, ā€œYou fall asleep talking about ā€˜contemplativesā€™, ā€œYou fell asleep saying ā€˜asceticsā€™;

ā€˜samaį¹‡Äā€™ti pabujjhasi; you wake up talking about ā€˜contemplativesā€™, you woke up saying ā€˜asceticsā€™;

Samaį¹‡Äneva kittesi, you only praise contemplatives, you only praise ascetics, madamā€”

samaį¹‡Ä« nÅ«na bhavissasi. surely you will become a contemplative. surely youā€™ll become an ascetic.

Vipulaį¹ annaƱca pānaƱca, Abundant food and drink You provide ascetics

samaį¹‡Änaį¹ paveccasi; you offer to contemplatives. with abundant food and drink.

RohinÄ« dāni pucchāmi, RohinÄ«, now I ask: I ask you now, Rohiį¹‡Ä«:

kena te samaį¹‡Ä piyā. what is so dear to you about contemplatives? why do you like ascetics?

Akammakāmā alasā, Theyā€™re idle and lazy, They donā€™t like to work, theyā€™re lazy,

paradattūpajīvino; living on what is given by others, they live on charity;

Āsaį¹sukā sādukāmā, longing for sweet sensual pleasures, always on the lookout, greedy for sweetsā€”

kena te samaį¹‡Ä piyāā€. what is so dear to you about contemplatives?ā€ so why do you like ascetics?ā€

ā€œCirassaį¹ vata maį¹ tāta, ā€œFor a very long time indeed, father, ā€œDad, for a long time now

samaį¹‡Änaį¹ paripucchasi; you have asked me about contemplatives. youā€™ve questioned me about ascetics.

Tesaį¹ te kittayissāmi, For you, I will speak in praise of their I shall extol for you

paƱƱāsÄ«laparakkamaį¹. wisdom, morality, and commitment. their wisdom, ethics, and vigor.

Kammakāmā analasā, Industrious, not lazy, They like to work, theyā€™re not lazy;

kammaseį¹­į¹­hassa kārakā; doers of the best deeds, by giving up greed and hate,

Rāgaį¹ dosaį¹ pajahanti, they give up passion and aversionā€”they do the best kind of workā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

TÄ«į¹‡i pāpassa mÅ«lāni, The three roots of evil As for the three roots of evil,

dhunanti sucikārino; they shake off, the ones whose actions are pure, by pure deeds they shake them off.

Sabbaį¹ pāpaį¹ pahÄ«nesaį¹, who have abandoned all evilā€”They have given up all wickednessā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Kāyakammaį¹ suci nesaį¹, They do pure bodily actions, Their bodily actions are pure;

vacÄ«kammaƱca tādisaį¹; as well as verbal actions, their actions of speech likewise;

Manokammaį¹ suci nesaį¹, and pure mental actionsā€”their actions of mind are pureā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Vimalā saį¹…khamuttāva, Spotless as a pearl, Immaculate as a conch-shell,

suddhā santarabāhirā; they are pure internally and externally, theyā€™re pure inside and out,

Puį¹‡į¹‡Ä sukkāna dhammānaį¹, and full of bright qualitiesā€”full of bright qualitiesā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Bahussutā dhammadharā, Very learned, knowing the Dhamma by heart, Theyā€™re learned and memorize the teaching,

ariyā dhammajīvino; Noble Ones, living a life of Dhamma, noble, living righteously,

Atthaį¹ dhammaƱca desenti, they expound the meaning of the Dhammaā€”teaching the text and its meaning:

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Bahussutā dhammadharā, Very learned, knowing the Dhamma by heart, Theyā€™re learned and memorize the teaching,

ariyā dhammajīvino; Noble Ones, living a life of Dhamma, noble, living righteously,

Ekaggacittā satimanto, mindful, with one-pointed mindsā€”unified in mind, and mindfulā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

DÅ«raį¹…gamā satimanto, Going afar, mindful, Traveling afar, and mindful,

mantabhāį¹‡Ä« anuddhatā; giving counsel without conceit, thoughtful in counsel, not restless,

Dukkhassantaį¹ pajānanti, they clearly know the end of sufferingā€”they understand the end of sufferingā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Yasmā gāmā pakkamanti, From whichever village they set out, When they leave a village,

na vilokenti kiƱcanaį¹; they never look back, they donā€™t look back with longing,

Anapekkhāva gacchanti, they wander without longingā€”but proceed without concernā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Na te saį¹ koį¹­į¹­he openti, They do not deposit things in storerooms, They hoard no goods in storerooms,

na kumbhiį¹ na khaįø·opiyaį¹; nor do they have pots and pans, nor in pots or baskets.

Pariniį¹­į¹­hitamesānā, seeking complete perfectionā€”They seek food prepared by othersā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Na te hiraƱƱaį¹ gaį¹‡hanti, They do not take up gold, They donā€™t receive gold coins,

na suvaį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ na rÅ«piyaį¹; silver or money, or gold or silver;

Paccuppannena yāpenti, they are nourished by the present momentā€”feeding on whatever comes that day,

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatā€™s why I like ascetics.

Nānākulā pabbajitā, Monastics from different clans, They have gone forth from different families,

nānājanapadehi ca; and from different provinces, even different countries,

AƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ piyāyanti, they hold each other dearā€”and yet they all love one anotherā€”

tena me samaį¹‡Ä piyāā€. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me.ā€ thatā€™s why I like ascetics.ā€

ā€œAtthāya vata no bhoti, ā€œIt surely was for our benefit ā€œDear RohinÄ«, it was truly for our benefit

kule jātāsi rohinī; that you were born in this clan, Rohinī. that you were born in our family!

Saddhā buddhe ca dhamme ca, Very devout, and with faith in the Buddha, the Dhamma, You have faith and such keen respect

saį¹…ghe ca tibbagāravā. and the Sangha. for the Buddha, his teaching, and the Sangha.

Tuvaį¹ hetaį¹ pajānāsi, You clearly know this For you understand this

puƱƱakkhettaį¹ anuttaraį¹; incomparable field of merit. supreme field of merit.

Amhampi ete samaį¹‡Ä, These contemplatives These ascetics will henceforth

paį¹­igaį¹‡hanti dakkhiį¹‡aį¹. will receive donations from us as well. receive our religious donation, too.

Patiį¹­į¹­hito hettha yaƱƱo, Charity will be established here by us, For there we will place our sacrifice,

vipulo no bhavissatiā€; and it will be abundant.ā€ and it shall be abundant.ā€

ā€œSace bhāyasi dukkhassa, ā€œIf you are afraid of suffering, ā€œIf you fear suffering,

sace te dukkhamappiyaį¹. if you dislike suffering, if you donā€™t like suffering,

Upehi saraį¹‡aį¹ buddhaį¹, go for refuge to the Buddha, go for refuge to the Buddha, the unaffected,

dhammaį¹ saį¹…ghaƱca tādinaį¹; Dhamma, and Sangha. to his teaching and to the Sangha.

Samādiyāhi sīlāni, Take up the moral practices, Undertake the precepts,

taį¹ te atthāya hehitiā€. for your own sake.ā€ that will be good for you.ā€

ā€œUpemi saraį¹‡aį¹ buddhaį¹, ā€œI go for refuge to the Buddha, ā€œI go for refuge to the Buddha, the unaffected,

dhammaį¹ saį¹…ghaƱca tādinaį¹; Dhamma, and Sangha. to his teaching and to the Sangha.

Samādiyāmi sīlāni, Having taken up the moral practices, I undertake the precepts,

taį¹ me atthāya hehiti. it will be for my sake.ā€ that will be good for me.

Brahmabandhu pure āsiį¹, ā€œBefore I was a kinsman of Brahmā, I used to be brahmin by kin,

so idānimhi brāhmaį¹‡o; now I am a brahmin. now I genuinely am a brahmin.

Tevijjo sottiyo camhi, Possessing the three knowledges, I am one who has attained the highest knowledge, Master of the three knowledges, Iā€™m a scholar,

vedagÅ« camhi nhātakoā€. I am one who has bathed.ā€ a knowledge master, a bathed initiate.ā€
