Samaį¹Äneva kittesi, you only praise contemplatives, you only praise ascetics, madamā
samaį¹Ä« nÅ«na bhavissasi. surely you will become a contemplative. surely youāll become an ascetic.
Vipulaį¹ annaƱca pÄnaƱca, Abundant food and drink You provide ascetics
samaį¹Änaį¹ paveccasi; you offer to contemplatives. with abundant food and drink.
RohinÄ« dÄni pucchÄmi, RohinÄ«, now I ask: I ask you now, Rohiį¹Ä«:
kena te samaį¹Ä piyÄ. what is so dear to you about contemplatives? why do you like ascetics?
AkammakÄmÄ alasÄ, Theyāre idle and lazy, They donāt like to work, theyāre lazy,
paradattūpajīvino; living on what is given by others, they live on charity;
Äsaį¹sukÄ sÄdukÄmÄ, longing for sweet sensual pleasures, always on the lookout, greedy for sweetsā
kena te samaį¹Ä piyÄā. what is so dear to you about contemplatives?ā so why do you like ascetics?ā
āCirassaį¹ vata maį¹ tÄta, āFor a very long time indeed, father, āDad, for a long time now
samaį¹Änaį¹ paripucchasi; you have asked me about contemplatives. youāve questioned me about ascetics.
Tesaį¹ te kittayissÄmi, For you, I will speak in praise of their I shall extol for you
paƱƱÄsÄ«laparakkamaį¹. wisdom, morality, and commitment. their wisdom, ethics, and vigor.
KammakÄmÄ analasÄ, Industrious, not lazy, They like to work, theyāre not lazy;
kammaseį¹į¹hassa kÄrakÄ; doers of the best deeds, by giving up greed and hate,
RÄgaį¹ dosaį¹ pajahanti, they give up passion and aversionāthey do the best kind of workā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.
TÄ«į¹i pÄpassa mÅ«lÄni, The three roots of evil As for the three roots of evil,
dhunanti sucikÄrino; they shake off, the ones whose actions are pure, by pure deeds they shake them off.
Sabbaį¹ pÄpaį¹ pahÄ«nesaį¹, who have abandoned all evilāThey have given up all wickednessā

KÄyakammaį¹ suci nesaį¹, They do pure bodily actions, Their bodily actions are pure;
vacÄ«kammaƱca tÄdisaį¹; as well as verbal actions, their actions of speech likewise;
Manokammaį¹ suci nesaį¹, and pure mental actionsātheir actions of mind are pureā

khamuttÄva, Spotless as a pearl, Immaculate as a conch-shell,
suddhÄ santarabÄhirÄ; they are pure internally and externally, theyāre pure inside and out,
Puį¹į¹Ä sukkÄna dhammÄnaį¹, and full of bright qualitiesāfull of bright qualitiesā

BahussutÄ dhammadharÄ, Very learned, knowing the Dhamma by heart, Theyāre learned and memorize the teaching,
ariyÄ dhammajÄ«vino; Noble Ones, living a life of Dhamma, noble, living righteously,

BahussutÄ dhammadharÄ, Very learned, knowing the Dhamma by heart, Theyāre learned and memorize the teaching,
ariyÄ dhammajÄ«vino; Noble Ones, living a life of Dhamma, noble, living righteously,
EkaggacittÄ satimanto, mindful, with one-pointed mindsāunified in mind, and mindfulā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.

gamÄ satimanto, Going afar, mindful, Traveling afar, and mindful,
mantabhÄį¹Ä« anuddhatÄ; giving counsel without conceit, thoughtful in counsel, not restless,
Dukkhassantaį¹ pajÄnanti, they clearly know the end of sufferingāthey understand the end of sufferingā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.
YasmÄ gÄmÄ pakkamanti, From whichever village they set out, When they leave a village,
na vilokenti kiƱcanaį¹; they never look back, they donāt look back with longing,
AnapekkhÄva gacchanti, they wander without longingābut proceed without concernā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.
Na te saį¹ koį¹į¹he openti, They do not deposit things in storerooms, They hoard no goods in storerooms,
na kumbhiį¹ na khaįø·opiyaį¹; nor do they have pots and pans, nor in pots or baskets.
Pariniį¹į¹hitamesÄnÄ, seeking complete perfectionāThey seek food prepared by othersā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.
Na te hiraƱƱaį¹ gaį¹hanti, They do not take up gold, They donāt receive gold coins,
na suvaį¹į¹aį¹ na rÅ«piyaį¹; silver or money, or gold or silver;
Paccuppannena yÄpenti, they are nourished by the present momentāfeeding on whatever comes that day,
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄ. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me. thatās why I like ascetics.
NÄnÄkulÄ pabbajitÄ, Monastics from different clans, They have gone forth from different families,
nÄnÄjanapadehi ca; and from different provinces, even different countries,
AƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ piyÄyanti, they hold each other dearāand yet they all love one anotherā
tena me samaį¹Ä piyÄā. because of this, contemplatives are dear to me.ā thatās why I like ascetics.ā
āAtthÄya vata no bhoti, āIt surely was for our benefit āDear RohinÄ«, it was truly for our benefit
kule jÄtÄsi rohinÄ«; that you were born in this clan, RohinÄ«. that you were born in our family!
SaddhÄ buddhe ca dhamme ca, Very devout, and with faith in the Buddha, the Dhamma, You have faith and such keen respect

ghe ca tibbagÄravÄ. and the Sangha. for the Buddha, his teaching, and the Sangha.
Tuvaį¹ hetaį¹ pajÄnÄsi, You clearly know this For you understand this
puƱƱakkhettaį¹ anuttaraį¹; incomparable field of merit. supreme field of merit.
Amhampi ete samaį¹Ä, These contemplatives These ascetics will henceforth
paį¹igaį¹hanti dakkhiį¹aį¹. will receive donations from us as well. receive our religious donation, too.
Patiį¹į¹hito hettha yaƱƱo, Charity will be established here by us, For there we will place our sacrifice,
vipulo no bhavissatiā; and it will be abundant.ā and it shall be abundant.ā
āSace bhÄyasi dukkhassa, āIf you are afraid of suffering, āIf you fear suffering,
sace te dukkhamappiyaį¹. if you dislike suffering, if you donāt like suffering,
Upehi saraį¹aį¹ buddhaį¹, go for refuge to the Buddha, go for refuge to the Buddha, the unaffected,
dhammaį¹ saį¹
ghaƱca tÄdinaį¹; Dhamma, and Sangha. to his teaching and to the Sangha.
SamÄdiyÄhi sÄ«lÄni, Take up the moral practices, Undertake the precepts,
taį¹ te atthÄya hehitiā. for your own sake.ā that will be good for you.ā
āUpemi saraį¹aį¹ buddhaį¹, āI go for refuge to the Buddha, āI go for refuge to the Buddha, the unaffected,
dhammaį¹ saį¹
ghaƱca tÄdinaį¹; Dhamma, and Sangha. to his teaching and to the Sangha.
SamÄdiyÄmi sÄ«lÄni, Having taken up the moral practices, I undertake the precepts,
taį¹ me atthÄya hehiti. it will be for my sake.ā that will be good for me.
Brahmabandhu pure Äsiį¹, āBefore I was a kinsman of BrahmÄ, I used to be brahmin by kin,
so idÄnimhi brÄhmaį¹o; now I am a brahmin. now I genuinely am a brahmin.
Tevijjo sottiyo camhi, Possessing the three knowledges, I am one who has attained the highest knowledge, Master of the three knowledges, Iām a scholar,
vedagÅ« camhi nhÄtakoā. I am one who has bathed.ā a knowledge master, a bathed initiate.ā
