Jaį¹ilasutta Dreadlocked Ascetics
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ gayÄyaį¹ viharati gayÄsÄ«se. At one time the Buddha was staying near GayÄ on GayÄ Head.
Tena kho pana samayena sambahulÄ jaį¹ilÄ sÄ«tÄsu hemantikÄsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapÄtasamaye gayÄyaį¹ ummujjantipi nimujjantipi, ummujjanimujjampi karonti osiƱcantipi, aggimpi juhanti: Now at that timeāduring the cold spell when the snow falls in the January winterāmany dreadlocked ascetics plunged in and out of the GayÄ river. Plunging and showering, they served the sacred flame, thinking:
āiminÄ suddhÄ«āti. āThrough this there is purity.ā
AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ te sambahule jaį¹ile sÄ«tÄsu hemantikÄsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapÄtasamaye gayÄyaį¹ ummujjantepi nimujjantepi ummujjanimujjampi karonte osiƱcantepi aggimpi juhante: The Buddha saw them plunging in and out.
āiminÄ suddhÄ«āti.
Atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
āNa udakena sucÄ« hoti, āPurity doesnāt come from water,
bahvettha nhÄyatÄ« jano; no matter how many people bathe there.
Yamhi saccaƱca dhammo ca, One who has truth and principle,
so sucÄ« so ca brÄhmaį¹oāti. they are pure, they are brahmins.ā
