Jaį¹ilasutta Dreadlocked Ascetics

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā gayāyaį¹ viharati gayāsÄ«se. At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on Gayā Head.

Tena kho pana samayena sambahulā jaį¹ilā sÄ«tāsu hemantikāsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapātasamaye gayāyaį¹ ummujjantipi nimujjantipi, ummujjanimujjampi karonti osiƱcantipi, aggimpi juhanti: Now at that timeā€”during the cold spell when the snow falls in the January winterā€”many dreadlocked ascetics plunged in and out of the Gayā river. Plunging and showering, they served the sacred flame, thinking:

ā€œiminā suddhÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThrough this there is purity.ā€

Addasā kho bhagavā te sambahule jaį¹ile sÄ«tāsu hemantikāsu rattÄ«su antaraį¹į¹hake himapātasamaye gayāyaį¹ ummujjantepi nimujjantepi ummujjanimujjampi karonte osiƱcantepi aggimpi juhante: The Buddha saw them plunging in and out.

ā€œiminā suddhÄ«ā€ti.

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaį¹ viditvā tāyaį¹ velāyaį¹ imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ā€œNa udakena sucÄ« hoti, ā€œPurity doesnā€™t come from water,

bahvettha nhāyatī jano; no matter how many people bathe there.

Yamhi saccaƱca dhammo ca, One who has truth and principle,

so sucÄ« so ca brāhmaį¹‡oā€ti. they are pure, they are brahmins.ā€

Navamaį¹.
