VisÄkhÄsutta With VisÄkhÄ
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbÄrÄme migÄramÄtupÄsÄde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SÄvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of MigÄraās mother in the Eastern Monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena visÄkhÄya migÄramÄtuyÄ kocideva attho raƱƱe pasenadimhi kosale paį¹ibaddho hoti. Now at that time VisÄkhÄ was caught up in some business with King Pasenadi.
Taį¹ rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo na yathÄdhippÄyaį¹ tÄ«reti. But the kingās settlement did not meet her expectations.
Atha kho visÄkhÄ migÄramÄtÄ divÄ divassa yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then, in the middle of the day, she went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down.
Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho visÄkhaį¹ migÄramÄtaraį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said to her:
āhanda kuto nu tvaį¹, visÄkhe, Ägacchasi divÄ divassÄāti? āSo, VisÄkhÄ, where are you coming from in the middle of the day?ā
āIdha me, bhante, kocideva attho raƱƱe pasenadimhi kosale paį¹ibaddho; āSir, I am caught up in some business with King Pasenadi.
taį¹ rÄjÄ pasenadi kosalo na yathÄdhippÄyaį¹ tÄ«retÄ«āti. But the kingās settlement did not meet my expectations.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
āSabbaį¹ paravasaį¹ dukkhaį¹, āAll under anotherās control is suffering,
sabbaį¹ issariyaį¹ sukhaį¹; all under oneās own authority is pleasing;
SÄdhÄraį¹e vihaƱƱanti, whatās shared is stressful for both parties,
yogÄ hi duratikkamÄāti. for yokes are hard to escape.ā
