Visākhāsutta With Visākhā

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of Migāraā€™s mother in the Eastern Monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena visākhāya migāramātuyā kocideva attho raƱƱe pasenadimhi kosale paį¹­ibaddho hoti. Now at that time Visākhā was caught up in some business with King Pasenadi.

Taį¹ rājā pasenadi kosalo na yathādhippāyaį¹ tÄ«reti. But the kingā€™s settlement did not meet her expectations.

Atha kho visākhā migāramātā divā divassa yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then, in the middle of the day, she went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho visākhaį¹ migāramātaraį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said to her:

ā€œhanda kuto nu tvaį¹, visākhe, āgacchasi divā divassāā€ti? ā€œSo, Visākhā, where are you coming from in the middle of the day?ā€

ā€œIdha me, bhante, kocideva attho raƱƱe pasenadimhi kosale paį¹­ibaddho; ā€œSir, I am caught up in some business with King Pasenadi.

taį¹ rājā pasenadi kosalo na yathādhippāyaį¹ tÄ«retÄ«ā€ti. But the kingā€™s settlement did not meet my expectations.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaį¹ viditvā tāyaį¹ velāyaį¹ imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ā€œSabbaį¹ paravasaį¹ dukkhaį¹, ā€œAll under anotherā€™s control is suffering,

sabbaį¹ issariyaį¹ sukhaį¹; all under oneā€™s own authority is pleasing;

Sādhāraį¹‡e vihaƱƱanti, whatā€™s shared is stressful for both parties,

yogā hi duratikkamāā€ti. for yokes are hard to escape.ā€
