DvidhÄpathasutta A Fork in the Road
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu addhÄnamaggappaį¹ipanno hoti ÄyasmatÄ nÄgasamÄlena pacchÄsamaį¹ena. At one time the Buddha was traveling along a road in the Kosalan lands with Venerable NÄgasamÄla as his second monk.
AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ nÄgasamÄlo antarÄmagge dvidhÄpathaį¹. NÄgasamÄla saw a fork in the road
DisvÄna bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to the Buddha,
āayaį¹, bhante, bhagavÄ pantho; āSir, this is the road,
iminÄ gacchÄmÄāti. let us go this way.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ nÄgasamÄlaį¹ etadavoca: But when he said this the Buddha responded,
āayaį¹, nÄgasamÄla, pantho; āNÄgasamÄla, this is the road,
iminÄ gacchÄmÄāti. let us go this way.ā
Dutiyampi kho ā¦peā¦ For a second time,
tatiyampi kho ÄyasmÄ nÄgasamÄlo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and a third time NÄgasamÄla said to the Buddha,
āayaį¹, bhante, bhagavÄ pantho; āSir, this is the road,
iminÄ gacchÄmÄāti. let us go this way.ā
Tatiyampi kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ nÄgasamÄlaį¹ etadavoca: And for a third time the Buddha responded,
āayaį¹, nÄgasamÄla, pantho; āNÄgasamÄla, this is the road,
iminÄ gacchÄmÄāti. let us go this way.ā
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ nÄgasamÄlo bhagavato pattacÄ«varaį¹ tattheva chamÄyaį¹ nikkhipitvÄ pakkÄmi: Then NÄgasamÄla put the Buddhaās bowl and robes down on the ground right there and left, saying,
āidaį¹, bhante, bhagavato pattacÄ«varanāti. āSir, here are your bowl and robes.ā
Atha kho Äyasmato nÄgasamÄlassa tena panthena gacchantassa antarÄmagge corÄ nikkhamitvÄ hatthehi ca pÄdehi ca Äkoį¹esuį¹ pattaƱca bhindiį¹su saį¹
ghÄį¹iƱca vipphÄlesuį¹. Then as NÄgasamÄla was going down that road, he was set upon by bandits who struck him with fists and feet, broke his bowl, and tore up his outer robe.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ nÄgasamÄlo bhinnena pattena vipphÄlitÄya saį¹
ghÄį¹iyÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then NÄgasamÄlaāwith his bowl broken and his outer robe tornāwent to the Buddha and told him what had happened.
Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ nÄgasamÄlo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āidha mayhaį¹, bhante, tena panthena gacchantassa antarÄmagge corÄ nikkhamitvÄ hatthehi ca pÄdehi ca Äkoį¹esuį¹, pattaƱca bhindiį¹su, saį¹
ghÄį¹iƱca vipphÄlesunāti.
Atha kho bhagavÄ etamatthaį¹ viditvÄ tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
āSaddhiį¹ caramekato vasaį¹, āWalking together, dwelling as one,
Misso aƱƱajanena vedagÅ«; the knowledge master mixes with foolish folk.
VidvÄ pajahÄti pÄpakaį¹, Knowing this, they give up wickedness,
KoƱco khÄ«rapakova ninnaganāti. like a milk-drinking heron the water.ā
