Dvidhāpathasutta A Fork in the Road

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosalesu addhānamaggappaį¹ipanno hoti āyasmatā nāgasamālena pacchāsamaį¹‡ena. At one time the Buddha was traveling along a road in the Kosalan lands with Venerable Nāgasamāla as his second monk.

Addasā kho āyasmā nāgasamālo antarāmagge dvidhāpathaį¹. Nāgasamāla saw a fork in the road

Disvāna bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to the Buddha,

ā€œayaį¹, bhante, bhagavā pantho; ā€œSir, this is the road,

iminā gacchāmāā€ti. let us go this way.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ nāgasamālaį¹ etadavoca: But when he said this the Buddha responded,

ā€œayaį¹, nāgasamāla, pantho; ā€œNāgasamāla, this is the road,

iminā gacchāmāā€ti. let us go this way.ā€

Dutiyampi kho ā€¦peā€¦ For a second time,

tatiyampi kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and a third time Nāgasamāla said to the Buddha,

ā€œayaį¹, bhante, bhagavā pantho; ā€œSir, this is the road,

iminā gacchāmāā€ti. let us go this way.ā€

Tatiyampi kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ nāgasamālaį¹ etadavoca: And for a third time the Buddha responded,

ā€œayaį¹, nāgasamāla, pantho; ā€œNāgasamāla, this is the road,

iminā gacchāmāā€ti. let us go this way.ā€

Atha kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavato pattacÄ«varaį¹ tattheva chamāyaį¹ nikkhipitvā pakkāmi: Then Nāgasamāla put the Buddhaā€™s bowl and robes down on the ground right there and left, saying,

ā€œidaį¹, bhante, bhagavato pattacÄ«varanā€ti. ā€œSir, here are your bowl and robes.ā€

Atha kho āyasmato nāgasamālassa tena panthena gacchantassa antarāmagge corā nikkhamitvā hatthehi ca pādehi ca ākoį¹esuį¹ pattaƱca bhindiį¹su saį¹…ghāį¹iƱca vipphālesuį¹. Then as Nāgasamāla was going down that road, he was set upon by bandits who struck him with fists and feet, broke his bowl, and tore up his outer robe.

Atha kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhinnena pattena vipphālitāya saį¹…ghāį¹iyā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then Nāgasamālaā€”with his bowl broken and his outer robe tornā€”went to the Buddha and told him what had happened.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:

ā€œidha mayhaį¹, bhante, tena panthena gacchantassa antarāmagge corā nikkhamitvā hatthehi ca pādehi ca ākoį¹esuį¹, pattaƱca bhindiį¹su, saį¹…ghāį¹iƱca vipphālesunā€ti.

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaį¹ viditvā tāyaį¹ velāyaį¹ imaį¹ udānaį¹ udānesi: Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ā€œSaddhiį¹ caramekato vasaį¹, ā€œWalking together, dwelling as one,

Misso aƱƱajanena vedagÅ«; the knowledge master mixes with foolish folk.

Vidvā pajahāti pāpakaį¹, Knowing this, they give up wickedness,

KoƱco khÄ«rapakova ninnaganā€ti. like a milk-drinking heron the water.ā€

Sattamaį¹.
