ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate acirapakkante devadatte. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ devadattaį¹ Ärabbha bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha spoke to the mendicants about Devadatta:
āIdha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti: āMendicants, take the case of a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness, thinking,
āotiį¹į¹omhi jÄtiyÄ jarÄya maraį¹ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upÄyÄsehi, dukkhotiį¹į¹o dukkhapareto, āIām swamped by rebirth, old age, and death; by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. Iām swamped by suffering, mired in suffering.
appeva nÄma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyÄ paƱƱÄyethÄāti. Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.ā
So evaį¹ pabbajito samÄno lÄbhasakkÄrasilokaį¹ abhinibbatteti. When theyāve gone forth they generate possessions, honor, and popularity.
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena attamano hoti paripuį¹į¹asaį¹
kappo. Theyāre happy with that, and theyāve got all they wished for.
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena attÄnukkaį¹seti paraį¹ vambheti: And they glorify themselves and put others down because of that:
āahamasmi lÄbhasakkÄrasilokavÄ, ime panaƱƱe bhikkhÅ« appaƱƱÄtÄ appesakkhÄāti. āIām the one with possessions, honor, and popularity. These other mendicants are obscure and insignificant.ā
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena majjati pamajjati pamÄdaį¹ Äpajjati, pamatto samÄno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity. And being negligent they live in suffering.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso sÄratthiko sÄragavesÄ« sÄrapariyesanaį¹ caramÄno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato atikkammeva sÄraį¹ atikkamma phegguį¹ atikkamma tacaį¹ atikkamma papaį¹ikaį¹, sÄkhÄpalÄsaį¹ chetvÄ ÄdÄya pakkameyya āsÄranāti maƱƱamÄno. Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heād come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But, passing over the heartwood, softwood, bark, and shoots, heād cut off the branches and leaves and depart imagining they were heartwood.
Tamenaį¹ cakkhumÄ puriso disvÄ evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw him theyād say,
āna vatÄyaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso aƱƱÄsi sÄraį¹, na aƱƱÄsi phegguį¹, na aƱƱÄsi tacaį¹, na aƱƱÄsi papaį¹ikaį¹, na aƱƱÄsi sÄkhÄpalÄsaį¹. āThis gentleman doesnāt know what heartwood, softwood, bark, shoots, or branches and leaves are.
TathÄ hayaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sÄratthiko sÄragavesÄ« sÄrapariyesanaį¹ caramÄno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato atikkammeva sÄraį¹ atikkamma phegguį¹ atikkamma tacaį¹ atikkamma papaį¹ikaį¹, sÄkhÄpalÄsaį¹ chetvÄ ÄdÄya pakkanto āsÄranāti maƱƱamÄno. Thatās why he passed them over, cut off the branches and leaves, and departed imagining they were heartwood.
YaƱcassa sÄrena sÄrakaraį¹Ä«yaį¹ taƱcassa atthaį¹ nÄnubhavissatÄ«āti. Whatever he needs to make from heartwood, he wonāt succeed.ā ā¦
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco kulaputto saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti:

Appamatto samÄno sÄ«lasampadaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in ethics.
So tÄya sÄ«lasampadÄya attamano hoti paripuį¹į¹asaį¹
kappo. Theyāre happy with that, and theyāve got all they wished for.
So tÄya sÄ«lasampadÄya attÄnukkaį¹seti, paraį¹ vambheti: And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that:
āahamasmi sÄ«lavÄ kalyÄį¹adhammo, ime panaƱƱe bhikkhÅ« dussÄ«lÄ pÄpadhammÄāti. āIām the one who is ethical, of good character. These other mendicants are unethical, of bad character.ā
So tÄya sÄ«lasampadÄya majjati pamajjati pamÄdaį¹ Äpajjati, pamatto samÄno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding their accomplishment in ethics. And being negligent they live in suffering.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti: Next, take a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness, thinking,
āotiį¹į¹omhi jÄtiyÄ jarÄya maraį¹ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upÄyÄsehi, dukkhotiį¹į¹o dukkhapareto, āIām swamped by rebirth, old age, and death; by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. Iām swamped by suffering, mired in suffering.
appeva nÄma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyÄ paƱƱÄyethÄāti. Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.ā
So evaį¹ pabbajito samÄno lÄbhasakkÄrasilokaį¹ abhinibbatteti. When theyāve gone forth they generate possessions, honor, and popularity.
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena na attamano hoti, na paripuį¹į¹asaį¹
kappo. Theyāre not happy with that, and havenāt got all they wished for.
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena na attÄnukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donāt glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.
So tena lÄbhasakkÄrasilokena na majjati nappamajjati na pamÄdaį¹ Äpajjati, appamatto samÄno sÄ«lasampadaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in ethics.
So tÄya sÄ«lasampadÄya attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹į¹asaį¹
kappo. Theyāre happy with that, but they havenāt got all they wished for.
So tÄya sÄ«lasampadÄya na attÄnukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donāt glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.

So tena ƱÄį¹adassanena na majjati nappamajjati na pamÄdaį¹ Äpajjati, appamatto samÄno asamayavimokkhaį¹ ÄrÄdheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that knowledge and vision. Being diligent, they achieve irreversible freedom.
Aį¹į¹hÄnametaį¹, bhikkhave, anavakÄso yaį¹ so bhikkhu tÄya asamayavimuttiyÄ parihÄyetha. And itās impossible for that mendicant to fall away from that irreversible freedom.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso sÄratthiko sÄragavesÄ« sÄrapariyesanaį¹ caramÄno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato sÄraƱƱeva chetvÄ ÄdÄya pakkameyya āsÄranāti jÄnamÄno. Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heād come across a large tree standing with heartwood. Heād cut out just the heartwood and depart knowing it was heartwood.
Tamenaį¹ cakkhumÄ puriso disvÄ evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw him theyād say,
āaƱƱÄsi vatÄyaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sÄraį¹, aƱƱÄsi phegguį¹, aƱƱÄsi tacaį¹, aƱƱÄsi papaį¹ikaį¹, aƱƱÄsi sÄkhÄpalÄsaį¹. āThis gentleman knows what heartwood, softwood, bark, shoots, and branches and leaves are.
TathÄ hayaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sÄratthiko sÄragavesÄ« sÄrapariyesanaį¹ caramÄno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato sÄraƱƱeva chetvÄ ÄdÄya pakkanto āsÄranāti jÄnamÄno. Thatās why he cut out just the heartwood and departed knowing it was heartwood.
YaƱcassa sÄrena sÄrakaraį¹Ä«yaį¹ taƱcassa atthaį¹ anubhavissatÄ«āti. Whatever he needs to make from heartwood, he will succeed.ā ā¦
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco kulaputto saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti:

Aį¹į¹hÄnametaį¹, bhikkhave, anavakÄso yaį¹ so bhikkhu tÄya asamayavimuttiyÄ parihÄyetha. Itās impossible for that mendicant to fall away from that irreversible freedom.
Iti kho, bhikkhave, nayidaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ lÄbhasakkÄrasilokÄnisaį¹saį¹, na sÄ«lasampadÄnisaį¹saį¹, na samÄdhisampadÄnisaį¹saį¹, na ƱÄį¹adassanÄnisaį¹saį¹. And so, mendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of possessions, honor, and popularity, or for accomplishment in ethics, or for accomplishment in immersion, or for knowledge and vision.
YÄ ca kho ayaį¹, bhikkhave, akuppÄ cetovimuttiāRather, the goal, heartwood, and final end of the spiritual life is the unshakable freedom of heart.ā
etadatthamidaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹, etaį¹ sÄraį¹ etaį¹ pariyosÄnanāti.
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
AttamanÄ te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato bhÄsitaį¹ abhinandunti. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
