Mahāsāropamasutta The Longer Simile of the Heartwood

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate acirapakkante devadatte. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left.

Tatra kho bhagavā devadattaį¹ ārabbha bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: There the Buddha spoke to the mendicants about Devadatta:

ā€œIdha, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti: ā€œMendicants, take the case of a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness, thinking,

ā€˜otiį¹‡į¹‡omhi jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkhotiį¹‡į¹‡o dukkhapareto, ā€˜Iā€™m swamped by rebirth, old age, and death; by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. Iā€™m swamped by suffering, mired in suffering.

appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paƱƱāyethāā€™ti. Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.ā€™

So evaį¹ pabbajito samāno lābhasakkārasilokaį¹ abhinibbatteti. When theyā€™ve gone forth they generate possessions, honor, and popularity.

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena attamano hoti paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re happy with that, and theyā€™ve got all they wished for.

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena attānukkaį¹seti paraį¹ vambheti: And they glorify themselves and put others down because of that:

ā€˜ahamasmi lābhasakkārasilokavā, ime panaƱƱe bhikkhÅ« appaƱƱātā appesakkhāā€™ti. ā€˜Iā€™m the one with possessions, honor, and popularity. These other mendicants are obscure and insignificant.ā€™

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena majjati pamajjati pamādaį¹ āpajjati, pamatto samāno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity. And being negligent they live in suffering.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva sāraį¹ atikkamma phegguį¹ atikkamma tacaį¹ atikkamma papaį¹­ikaį¹, sākhāpalāsaį¹ chetvā ādāya pakkameyya ā€˜sāranā€™ti maƱƱamāno. Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heā€™d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But, passing over the heartwood, softwood, bark, and shoots, heā€™d cut off the branches and leaves and depart imagining they were heartwood.

Tamenaį¹ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw him theyā€™d say,

ā€˜na vatāyaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso aƱƱāsi sāraį¹, na aƱƱāsi phegguį¹, na aƱƱāsi tacaį¹, na aƱƱāsi papaį¹­ikaį¹, na aƱƱāsi sākhāpalāsaį¹. ā€˜This gentleman doesnā€™t know what heartwood, softwood, bark, shoots, or branches and leaves are.

Tathā hayaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva sāraį¹ atikkamma phegguį¹ atikkamma tacaį¹ atikkamma papaį¹­ikaį¹, sākhāpalāsaį¹ chetvā ādāya pakkanto ā€œsāranā€ti maƱƱamāno. Thatā€™s why he passed them over, cut off the branches and leaves, and departed imagining they were heartwood.

YaƱcassa sārena sārakaraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ taƱcassa atthaį¹ nānubhavissatÄ«ā€™ti. Whatever he needs to make from heartwood, he wonā€™t succeed.ā€™ ā€¦

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti:

ā€˜otiį¹‡į¹‡omhi jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkhotiį¹‡į¹‡o dukkhapareto,

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sākhāpalāsaį¹ aggahesi brahmacariyassa; This is called a mendicant who has grabbed the branches and leaves of the spiritual life

tena ca vosānaį¹ āpādi. and stopped short with that.

Idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti: Next, take a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness ā€¦

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity.

Appamatto samāno sÄ«lasampadaį¹ ārādheti. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in ethics.

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya attamano hoti paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re happy with that, and theyā€™ve got all they wished for.

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya attānukkaį¹seti, paraį¹ vambheti: And they glorify themselves and put others down on account of that:

ā€˜ahamasmi sÄ«lavā kalyāį¹‡adhammo, ime panaƱƱe bhikkhÅ« dussÄ«lā pāpadhammāā€™ti. ā€˜Iā€™m the one who is ethical, of good character. These other mendicants are unethical, of bad character.ā€™

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya majjati pamajjati pamādaį¹ āpajjati, pamatto samāno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding their accomplishment in ethics. And being negligent they live in suffering.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva sāraį¹ atikkamma phegguį¹ atikkamma tacaį¹, papaį¹­ikaį¹ chetvā ādāya pakkameyya ā€˜sāranā€™ti maƱƱamāno. Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heā€™d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But, passing over the heartwood, softwood, and bark, heā€™d cut off the shoots and depart imagining they were heartwood.

Tamenaį¹ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw him theyā€™d say,

ā€˜na vatāyaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso aƱƱāsi sāraį¹, na aƱƱāsi phegguį¹, na aƱƱāsi tacaį¹, na aƱƱāsi papaį¹­ikaį¹, na aƱƱāsi sākhāpalāsaį¹. ā€˜This gentleman doesnā€™t know what heartwood, softwood, bark, shoots, or branches and leaves are.

So tāya samādhisampadāya majjati pamajjati pamādaį¹ āpajjati, pamatto samāno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that accomplishment in immersion. And being negligent they live in suffering.

Ime panaƱƱe bhikkhÅ« ajānaį¹ apassaį¹ viharantÄ«ā€™ti. These other mendicants meditate without knowing and seeing.ā€™

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena majjati pamajjati pamādaį¹ āpajjati, pamatto samāno dukkhaį¹ viharati. And so they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that knowledge and vision. And being negligent they live in suffering.

ā€˜otiį¹‡į¹‡omhi jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkhotiį¹‡į¹‡o dukkhapareto, ā€˜Iā€™m swamped by rebirth, old age, and death; by sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. Iā€™m swamped by suffering, mired in suffering.

appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paƱƱāyethāā€™ti. Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.ā€™

So evaį¹ pabbajito samāno lābhasakkārasilokaį¹ abhinibbatteti. When theyā€™ve gone forth they generate possessions, honor, and popularity.

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena na attamano hoti, na paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re not happy with that, and havenā€™t got all they wished for.

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donā€™t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.

So tena lābhasakkārasilokena na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno sÄ«lasampadaį¹ ārādheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence on account of those possessions, honor, and popularity. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in ethics.

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re happy with that, but they havenā€™t got all they wished for.

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donā€™t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.

So tāya sÄ«lasampadāya na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno samādhisampadaį¹ ārādheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that accomplishment in ethics. Being diligent, they achieve accomplishment in immersion.

So tāya samādhisampadāya attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re happy with that, but they havenā€™t got all they wished for.

So tāya samādhisampadāya na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donā€™t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.

So tāya samādhisampadāya na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno Ʊāį¹‡adassanaį¹ ārādheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that accomplishment in immersion. Being diligent, they achieve knowledge and vision.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo. Theyā€™re happy with that, but they havenā€™t got all they wished for.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti. They donā€™t glorify themselves and put others down on account of that.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno asamayavimokkhaį¹ ārādheti. Nor do they become indulgent and fall into negligence regarding that knowledge and vision. Being diligent, they achieve irreversible freedom.

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, bhikkhave, anavakāso yaį¹ so bhikkhu tāya asamayavimuttiyā parihāyetha. And itā€™s impossible for that mendicant to fall away from that irreversible freedom.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato sāraƱƱeva chetvā ādāya pakkameyya ā€˜sāranā€™ti jānamāno. Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heā€™d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. Heā€™d cut out just the heartwood and depart knowing it was heartwood.

Tamenaį¹ cakkhumā puriso disvā evaį¹ vadeyya: If a person with clear eyes saw him theyā€™d say,

ā€˜aƱƱāsi vatāyaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sāraį¹, aƱƱāsi phegguį¹, aƱƱāsi tacaį¹, aƱƱāsi papaį¹­ikaį¹, aƱƱāsi sākhāpalāsaį¹. ā€˜This gentleman knows what heartwood, softwood, bark, shoots, and branches and leaves are.

Tathā hayaį¹ bhavaį¹ puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaį¹ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato sāraƱƱeva chetvā ādāya pakkanto ā€œsāranā€ti jānamāno. Thatā€™s why he cut out just the heartwood and departed knowing it was heartwood.

YaƱcassa sārena sārakaraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ taƱcassa atthaį¹ anubhavissatÄ«ā€™ti. Whatever he needs to make from heartwood, he will succeed.ā€™ ā€¦

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco kulaputto saddhā agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajito hoti:

ā€˜otiį¹‡į¹‡omhi jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi, dukkhotiį¹‡į¹‡o dukkhapareto,

So tāya samādhisampadāya attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo.

So tāya samādhisampadāya na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti.

So tāya samādhisampadāya na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno Ʊāį¹‡adassanaį¹ ārādheti.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena attamano hoti, no ca kho paripuį¹‡į¹‡asaį¹…kappo.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena na attānukkaį¹seti, na paraį¹ vambheti.

So tena Ʊāį¹‡adassanena na majjati nappamajjati na pamādaį¹ āpajjati, appamatto samāno asamayavimokkhaį¹ ārādheti.

Aį¹­į¹­hānametaį¹, bhikkhave, anavakāso yaį¹ so bhikkhu tāya asamayavimuttiyā parihāyetha. Itā€™s impossible for that mendicant to fall away from that irreversible freedom.

Iti kho, bhikkhave, nayidaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ lābhasakkārasilokānisaį¹saį¹, na sÄ«lasampadānisaį¹saį¹, na samādhisampadānisaį¹saį¹, na Ʊāį¹‡adassanānisaį¹saį¹. And so, mendicants, this spiritual life is not lived for the sake of possessions, honor, and popularity, or for accomplishment in ethics, or for accomplishment in immersion, or for knowledge and vision.

Yā ca kho ayaį¹, bhikkhave, akuppā cetovimuttiā€”Rather, the goal, heartwood, and final end of the spiritual life is the unshakable freedom of heart.ā€

etadatthamidaį¹, bhikkhave, brahmacariyaį¹, etaį¹ sāraį¹ etaį¹ pariyosānanā€ti.

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Attamanā te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinandunti. Satisfied, the mendicants approved what the Buddha said.
