Kukkuravatikasutta The Ascetic Who Behaved Like a Dog

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā koliyesu viharati haliddavasanaį¹ nāma koliyānaį¹ nigamo. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Haliddavasana.

Atha kho puį¹‡į¹‡o ca koliyaputto govatiko acelo ca seniyo kukkuravatiko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Acelo pana seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā kukkurova palikujjitvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Then Puį¹‡į¹‡a the Koliyan, a cow votary, and the naked ascetic Seniya, a dog votary, went to see the Buddha. Puį¹‡į¹‡a bowed to the Buddha and sat down to one side, while Seniya exchanged greetings and polite conversation with him before sitting down to one side curled up like a dog.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Puį¹‡į¹‡a said to the Buddha,

ā€œayaį¹, bhante, acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko dukkarakārako chamānikkhittaį¹ bhojanaį¹ bhuƱjati. ā€œSir, this naked ascetic Seniya the dog votary does a hard thing: he eats food placed on the ground.

Tassa taį¹ kukkuravataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. For a long time he has undertaken that observance to behave like a dog.

Tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyoā€ti? Where will he be reborn in his next life?ā€

ā€œAlaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€ti. ā€œEnough, Puį¹‡į¹‡a, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€

Dutiyampi kho puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko ā€¦peā€¦ For a second time ā€¦

tatiyampi kho puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and a third time, Puį¹‡į¹‡a said to the Buddha,

ā€œayaį¹, bhante, acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko dukkarakārako chamānikkhittaį¹ bhojanaį¹ bhuƱjati. ā€œSir, this naked ascetic Seniya does a hard thing: he eats food placed on the ground.

Tassa taį¹ kukkuravataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. For a long time he has undertaken that observance to behave like a dog.

Tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyoā€ti? Where will he be reborn in his next life?ā€

ā€œAddhā kho te ahaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, na labhāmi. ā€œClearly, Puį¹‡į¹‡a, Iā€™m not getting through to you when I say:

Alaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ti; ā€˜Enough, Puį¹‡į¹‡a, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€™

api ca tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.

Idha, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ekacco kukkuravataį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkurasÄ«laį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkuracittaį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkurākappaį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹. Take someone who develops the dog observance fully and uninterruptedly. They develop a dogā€™s ethics, a dogā€™s mentality, and a dogā€™s behavior fully and uninterruptedly.

So kukkuravataį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkurasÄ«laį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkuracittaį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, kukkurākappaį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä kukkurānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of dogs.

Sace kho panassa evaį¹diį¹­į¹­hi hoti: ā€˜imināhaį¹ sÄ«lena vā vatena vā tapena vā brahmacariyena vā devo vā bhavissāmi devaƱƱataro vāā€™ti, sāssa hoti micchādiį¹­į¹­hi. But if they have such a view: ā€˜By this precept or observance or fervent austerity or spiritual life, may I become one of the gods!ā€™ This is their wrong view.

Micchādiį¹­į¹­hissa kho ahaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, dvinnaį¹ gatÄ«naį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ gatiį¹ vadāmiā€”nirayaį¹ vā tiracchānayoniį¹ vā. An individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say: hell or the animal realm.

Iti kho, puį¹‡į¹‡a, sampajjamānaį¹ kukkuravataį¹ kukkurānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upaneti, vipajjamānaį¹ nirayanā€ti. So if the dog observance succeeds it leads to rebirth in the company of dogs, but if it fails it leads to hell.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko parodi, assÅ«ni pavattesi. When he said this, Seniya cried and burst out in tears.

Atha kho bhagavā puį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ koliyaputtaį¹ govatikaį¹ etadavoca: The Buddha said to Puį¹‡į¹‡a,

ā€œetaį¹ kho te ahaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, nālatthaį¹. ā€œThis is what I didnā€™t get through to you when I said:

Alaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€ti. ā€˜Enough, Puį¹‡į¹‡a, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€™ā€

ā€œNāhaį¹, bhante, etaį¹ rodāmi yaį¹ maį¹ bhagavā evamāha; Seniya said, ā€œSir, Iā€™m not crying because of what the Buddha said.

api ca me idaį¹, bhante, kukkuravataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. But, sir, for a long time I have undertaken this observance to behave like a dog.

Ayaį¹, bhante, puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko. Sir, this Puį¹‡į¹‡a is a cow votary.

Tassa taį¹ govataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. For a long time he has undertaken that observance to behave like a cow.

Tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyoā€ti? Where will he be reborn in his next life?ā€

ā€œAlaį¹, seniya, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ā€ti. ā€œEnough, Seniya, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€

Dutiyampi kho acelo seniyo ā€¦peā€¦ For a second time ā€¦

tatiyampi kho acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and a third time Seniya said to the Buddha,

ā€œayaį¹, bhante, puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko. ā€œSir, this Puį¹‡į¹‡a is a cow votary.

Tassa taį¹ govataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. For a long time he has undertaken that observance to behave like a cow.

Tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyoā€ti? Where will he be reborn in his next life?ā€

ā€œAddhā kho te ahaį¹, seniya, na labhāmi. ā€œClearly, Seniya, Iā€™m not getting through to you when I say:

Alaį¹, seniya, tiį¹­į¹­hatetaį¹; mā maį¹ etaį¹ pucchÄ«ti; ā€˜Enough, Seniya, let it be. Donā€™t ask me that.ā€™

api ca tyāhaį¹ byākarissāmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.

Idha, seniya, ekacco govataį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gosÄ«laį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gocittaį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gavākappaį¹ bhāveti paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹. Take someone who develops the cow observance fully and uninterruptedly. They develop a cowā€™s ethics, a cowā€™s mentality, and a cowā€™s behavior fully and uninterruptedly.

So govataį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gosÄ«laį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gocittaį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹, gavākappaį¹ bhāvetvā paripuį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ abbokiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä gunnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of cows.

api ca me idaį¹, bhante, govataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samādinnaį¹. But, sir, for a long time I have undertaken this observance to behave like a cow.

Evaį¹ pasanno ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavati; I am quite confident that the Buddha

pahoti bhagavā tathā dhammaį¹ desetuį¹ yathā ahaį¹ cevimaį¹ govataį¹ pajaheyyaį¹, ayaƱceva acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko taį¹ kukkuravataį¹ pajaheyyāā€ti. is capable of teaching me so that I can give up this cow observance, and the naked ascetic Seniya can give up that dog observance.ā€

ā€œTena hi, puį¹‡į¹‡a, suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, Puį¹‡į¹‡a, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ he replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œCattārimāni, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammāni mayā sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā paveditāni. ā€œPuį¹‡į¹‡a, I declare these four kinds of deeds, having realized them with my own insight.

Katamāni cattāri? What four?

Atthi, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ kaį¹‡haį¹ kaį¹‡havipākaį¹; There are dark deeds with dark results;

atthi, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ sukkaį¹ sukkavipākaį¹; bright deeds with bright results;

atthi, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkavipākaį¹; dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results; and

atthi, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ akaį¹‡haį¹ asukkaį¹ akaį¹‡haasukkavipākaį¹, kammakkhayāya saį¹vattati. neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds.

KatamaƱca, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ kaį¹‡haį¹ kaį¹‡havipākaį¹? And what are dark deeds with dark results?

Idha, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ekacco sabyābajjhaį¹ kāyasaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, sabyābajjhaį¹ vacÄ«saį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, sabyābajjhaį¹ manosaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti. Itā€™s when someone makes hurtful choices by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tamenaį¹ sabyābajjhaį¹ lokaį¹ upapannaį¹ samānaį¹ sabyābajjhā phassā phusanti. where hurtful contacts strike them.

So sabyābajjhehi phassehi phuį¹­į¹­ho samāno sabyābajjhaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedeti ekantadukkhaį¹, seyyathāpi sattā nerayikā. Touched by hurtful contacts, they experience hurtful feelings that are exclusively painfulā€”like the beings in hell.

Iti kho, puį¹‡į¹‡a, bhÅ«tā bhÅ«tassa upapatti hoti; This is how a being is born from a being.

yaį¹ karoti tena upapajjati, For your deeds determine your rebirth,

upapannamenaį¹ phassā phusanti. and when youā€™re reborn contacts strike you.

Evampāhaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ā€˜kammadāyādā sattāā€™ti vadāmi. This is why I say that sentient beings are heirs to their deeds.

Idaį¹ vuccati, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ kaį¹‡haį¹ kaį¹‡havipākaį¹. These are called dark deeds with dark results.

KatamaƱca, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ sukkaį¹ sukkavipākaį¹? And what are bright deeds with bright results?

Idha, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ekacco abyābajjhaį¹ kāyasaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, abyābajjhaį¹ vacÄ«saį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, abyābajjhaį¹ manosaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti. Itā€™s when someone makes pleasing choices by way of body, speech, and mind.

So abyābajjhehi phassehi phuį¹­į¹­ho samāno abyābajjhaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedeti ekantasukhaį¹, seyyathāpi devā subhakiį¹‡hā. Touched by pleasing contacts, they experience pleasing feelings of perfect happinessā€”like the gods of universal beauty.

Iti kho, puį¹‡į¹‡a, bhÅ«tā bhÅ«tassa upapatti hoti; This is how a being is born from a being.

yaį¹ karoti tena upapajjati, For your deeds determine your rebirth,

upapannamenaį¹ phassā phusanti. and when youā€™re reborn contacts strike you.

Idha, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ekacco sabyābajjhampi abyābajjhampi kāyasaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, sabyābajjhampi abyābajjhampi vacÄ«saį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti, sabyābajjhampi abyābajjhampi manosaį¹…khāraį¹ abhisaį¹…kharoti. Itā€™s when someone makes both hurtful and pleasing choices by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tamenaį¹ sabyābajjhampi abyābajjhampi lokaį¹ upapannaį¹ samānaį¹ sabyābajjhāpi abyābajjhāpi phassā phusanti. where hurtful and pleasing contacts strike them.

So sabyābajjhehipi abyābajjhehipi phassehi phuį¹­į¹­ho samāno sabyābajjhampi abyābajjhampi vedanaį¹ vedeti vokiį¹‡į¹‡asukhadukkhaį¹, seyyathāpi manussā ekacce ca devā ekacce ca vinipātikā. Touched by both hurtful and pleasing contacts, they experience both hurtful and pleasing feelings that are a mixture of pleasure and painā€”like humans, some gods, and some beings in the underworld.

Iti kho, puį¹‡į¹‡a, bhÅ«tā bhÅ«tassa upapatti hoti; This is how a being is born from a being.

yaį¹ karoti tena upapajjati. For what you do brings about your rebirth,

Upapannamenaį¹ phassā phusanti. and when youā€™re reborn contacts strike you.

Evampāhaį¹, puį¹‡į¹‡a, ā€˜kammadāyādā sattāā€™ti vadāmi. This is why I say that sentient beings are heirs to their deeds.

Idaį¹ vuccati, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkavipākaį¹. These are called dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results.

KatamaƱca, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ akaį¹‡haį¹ asukkaį¹ akaį¹‡haasukkavipākaį¹, kammakkhayāya saį¹vattati? And what are neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds?

Tatra, puį¹‡į¹‡a, yamidaį¹ kammaį¹ kaį¹‡haį¹ kaį¹‡havipākaį¹ tassa pahānāya yā cetanā, yamidaį¹ kammaį¹ sukkaį¹ sukkavipākaį¹ tassa pahānāya yā cetanā, yamidaį¹ kammaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkaį¹ kaį¹‡hasukkavipākaį¹ tassa pahānāya yā cetanāā€”Itā€™s the intention to give up dark deeds with dark results, bright deeds with bright results, and both dark and bright deeds with both dark and bright results.

idaį¹ vuccati, puį¹‡į¹‡a, kammaį¹ akaį¹‡haį¹ asukkaį¹ akaį¹‡haasukkavipākaį¹, kammakkhayāya saį¹vattatÄ«ti. These are called neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds.

Imāni kho, puį¹‡į¹‡a, cattāri kammāni mayā sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā paveditānÄ«ā€ti. These are the four kinds of deeds that I declare, having realized them with my own insight.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, puį¹‡į¹‡o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he had spoken, Puį¹‡į¹‡a the Koliyan said to the Buddha,

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bhante, abhikkantaį¹, bhante. ā€œExcellent, sir! Excellent! ā€¦

Seyyathāpi, bhante ā€¦peā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€

Acelo pana seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: And Seniya the naked ascetic said to the Buddha,

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bhante, abhikkantaį¹, bhante. ā€œExcellent, sir! Excellent! ā€¦

Seyyathāpi, bhante ā€¦peā€¦ pakāsito.

Esāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavantaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gacchāmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹…ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹…gha.

Labheyyāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹, labheyyaį¹ upasampadanā€ti. Sir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the Buddhaā€™s presence?ā€

ā€œYo kho, seniya, aƱƱatitthiyapubbo imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ākaį¹…khati pabbajjaį¹, ākaį¹…khati upasampadaį¹ so cattāro māse parivasati. Catunnaį¹ māsānaį¹ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhÅ« pabbājenti, upasampādenti bhikkhubhāvāya. ā€œSeniya, if someone formerly ordained in another sect wishes to take the going forth, the ordination in this teaching and training, they must spend four months on probation. When four months have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, theyā€™ll give the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.

Api ca mettha puggalavemattatā viditāā€ti. However, I have recognized individual differences in this matter.ā€

ā€œSace, bhante, aƱƱatitthiyapubbā imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye ākaį¹…khantā pabbajjaį¹ ākaį¹…khantā upasampadaį¹ te cattāro māse parivasanti catunnaį¹ māsānaį¹ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhÅ« pabbājenti upasampādenti bhikkhubhāvāya, ahaį¹ cattāri vassāni parivasissāmi catunnaį¹ vassānaį¹ accayena āraddhacittā bhikkhÅ« pabbājentu, upasampādentu bhikkhubhāvāyāā€ti. ā€œSir, if four months probation are required in such a case, Iā€™ll spend four years on probation. When four years have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, let them give me the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.ā€

Alattha kho acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹, alattha upasampadaį¹. And the naked ascetic Seniya received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddhaā€™s presence.

AcirÅ«pasampanno kho panāyasmā seniyo eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, Tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Not long after his ordination, Venerable Seniya, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro kho panāyasmā seniyo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Seniya became one of the perfected.
