Atha kho puį¹į¹o ca koliyaputto govatiko acelo ca seniyo kukkuravatiko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ puį¹į¹o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Acelo pana seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Puį¹į¹a bowed to the Buddha and sat down to one side, while Seniya exchanged greetings and polite conversation with him before sitting down to one side curled up like a dog.

āayaį¹, bhante, acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko dukkarakÄrako chamÄnikkhittaį¹ bhojanaį¹ bhuƱjati. āSir, this naked ascetic Seniya the dog votary does a hard thing: he eats food placed on the ground.
Tassa taį¹ kukkuravataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samÄdinnaį¹. For a long time he has undertaken that observance to behave like a dog.
Tassa kÄ gati, ko abhisamparÄyoāti? Where will he be reborn in his next life?ā

api ca tyÄhaį¹ byÄkarissÄmi. Nevertheless, I will answer you.
Idha, puį¹į¹a, ekacco kukkuravataį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkurasÄ«laį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkuracittaį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkurÄkappaį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹. Take someone who develops the dog observance fully and uninterruptedly. They develop a dogās ethics, a dogās mentality, and a dogās behavior fully and uninterruptedly.
So kukkuravataį¹ bhÄvetvÄ paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkurasÄ«laį¹ bhÄvetvÄ paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkuracittaį¹ bhÄvetvÄ paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, kukkurÄkappaį¹ bhÄvetvÄ paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä kukkurÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in the company of dogs.
Sace kho panassa evaį¹diį¹į¹hi hoti: āiminÄhaį¹ sÄ«lena vÄ vatena vÄ tapena vÄ brahmacariyena vÄ devo vÄ bhavissÄmi devaƱƱataro vÄāti, sÄssa hoti micchÄdiį¹į¹hi. But if they have such a view: āBy this precept or observance or fervent austerity or spiritual life, may I become one of the gods!ā This is their wrong view.
MicchÄdiį¹į¹hissa kho ahaį¹, puį¹į¹a, dvinnaį¹ gatÄ«naį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ gatiį¹ vadÄmiānirayaį¹ vÄ tiracchÄnayoniį¹ vÄ. An individual with wrong view is reborn in one of two places, I say: hell or the animal realm.
Iti kho, puį¹į¹a, sampajjamÄnaį¹ kukkuravataį¹ kukkurÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upaneti, vipajjamÄnaį¹ nirayanāti. So if the dog observance succeeds it leads to rebirth in the company of dogs, but if it fails it leads to hell.ā

api ca me idaį¹, bhante, kukkuravataį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ samattaį¹ samÄdinnaį¹. But, sir, for a long time I have undertaken this observance to behave like a dog.
Ayaį¹, bhante, puį¹į¹o koliyaputto govatiko. Sir, this Puį¹į¹a is a cow votary.

āayaį¹, bhante, puį¹į¹o koliyaputto govatiko. āSir, this Puį¹į¹a is a cow votary.

Idha, seniya, ekacco govataį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, gosÄ«laį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, gocittaį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹, gavÄkappaį¹ bhÄveti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ abbokiį¹į¹aį¹. Take someone who develops the cow observance fully and uninterruptedly. They develop a cowās ethics, a cowās mentality, and a cowās behavior fully and uninterruptedly.

Evaį¹ pasanno ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavati; I am quite confident that the Buddha
pahoti bhagavÄ tathÄ dhammaį¹ desetuį¹ yathÄ ahaį¹ cevimaį¹ govataį¹ pajaheyyaį¹, ayaƱceva acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko taį¹ kukkuravataį¹ pajaheyyÄāti. is capable of teaching me so that I can give up this cow observance, and the naked ascetic Seniya can give up that dog observance.ā
āTena hi, puį¹į¹a, suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, Puį¹į¹a, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho puį¹į¹o koliyaputto govatiko bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, sir,ā he replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āCattÄrimÄni, puį¹į¹a, kammÄni mayÄ sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ paveditÄni. āPuį¹į¹a, I declare these four kinds of deeds, having realized them with my own insight.
KatamÄni cattÄri? What four?
Atthi, puį¹į¹a, kammaį¹ kaį¹haį¹ kaį¹havipÄkaį¹; There are dark deeds with dark results;
atthi, puį¹į¹a, kammaį¹ sukkaį¹ sukkavipÄkaį¹; bright deeds with bright results;
atthi, puį¹į¹a, kammaį¹ kaį¹hasukkaį¹ kaį¹hasukkavipÄkaį¹; dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results; and
atthi, puį¹į¹a, kammaį¹ akaį¹haį¹ asukkaį¹ akaį¹haasukkavipÄkaį¹, kammakkhayÄya saį¹vattati. neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds.

ImÄni kho, puį¹į¹a, cattÄri kammÄni mayÄ sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ paveditÄnÄ«āti. These are the four kinds of deeds that I declare, having realized them with my own insight.ā

upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhagavÄ dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā

ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹

LabheyyÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹, labheyyaį¹ upasampadanāti. Sir, may I receive the going forth, the ordination in the Buddhaās presence?ā
āYo kho, seniya, aƱƱatitthiyapubbo imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye Äkaį¹
khati pabbajjaį¹, Äkaį¹
khati upasampadaį¹ so cattÄro mÄse parivasati. Catunnaį¹ mÄsÄnaį¹ accayena ÄraddhacittÄ bhikkhÅ« pabbÄjenti, upasampÄdenti bhikkhubhÄvÄya. āSeniya, if someone formerly ordained in another sect wishes to take the going forth, the ordination in this teaching and training, they must spend four months on probation. When four months have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, theyāll give the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.
Api ca mettha puggalavemattatÄ viditÄāti. However, I have recognized individual differences in this matter.ā

khantÄ upasampadaį¹ te cattÄro mÄse parivasanti catunnaį¹ mÄsÄnaį¹ accayena ÄraddhacittÄ bhikkhÅ« pabbÄjenti upasampÄdenti bhikkhubhÄvÄya, ahaį¹ cattÄri vassÄni parivasissÄmi catunnaį¹ vassÄnaį¹ accayena ÄraddhacittÄ bhikkhÅ« pabbÄjentu, upasampÄdentu bhikkhubhÄvÄyÄāti. āSir, if four months probation are required in such a case, Iāll spend four years on probation. When four years have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, let them give me the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.ā
Alattha kho acelo seniyo kukkuravatiko bhagavato santike pabbajjaį¹, alattha upasampadaį¹. And the naked ascetic Seniya received the going forth, the ordination in the Buddhaās presence.
AcirÅ«pasampanno kho panÄyasmÄ seniyo eko vÅ«pakaį¹į¹ho appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaāyassatthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti, Tadanuttaraį¹ābrahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja vihÄsi. Not long after his ordination, Venerable Seniya, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
āKhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti abbhaƱƱÄsi. He understood: āRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā
AƱƱataro kho panÄyasmÄ seniyo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Seniya became one of the perfected.
