Goliyānisutta With Gulissāni

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivāpe. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā€™ feeding ground.

Tena kho pana samayena goliyāni nāma bhikkhu āraƱƱiko padasamācāro saį¹…ghamajjhe osaį¹­o hoti kenacideva karaį¹‡Ä«yena. Now at that time a wilderness mendicant of boorish behavior named Gulissāni had come down to the midst of the Saį¹…gha on some business.

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto goliyāniį¹ bhikkhuį¹ ārabbha bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: There Venerable Sāriputta spoke to the mendicants about Gulissāni:

ā€œÄ€raƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena sabrahmacārÄ«su sagāravena bhavitabbaį¹ sappatissena. ā€œReverends, a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should have respect and reverence for his spiritual companions.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto sabrahmacārÄ«su agāravo hoti appatisso, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena, yo ayamāyasmā sabrahmacārÄ«su agāravo hoti appatissoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he has no respect and reverence for his spiritual companions?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena sabrahmacārÄ«su sagāravena bhavitabbaį¹ sappatissena. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should have respect and reverence for his spiritual companions.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena āsanakusalena bhavitabbaį¹: A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should be careful where he sits, thinking:

ā€˜iti there ca bhikkhÅ« nānupakhajja nisÄ«dissāmi nave ca bhikkhÅ« na āsanena paį¹­ibāhissāmÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜I shall sit so that I donā€™t intrude on the senior monks and I donā€™t block the junior monks from a seat.ā€™

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto na āsanakusalo hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena, yo ayamāyasmā āsanakusalo na hotÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s not careful where he sits?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena āsanakusalena bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should be careful where he sits.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena ābhisamācārikopi dhammo jānitabbo. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should know even the supplementary regulations.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto ābhisamācārikampi dhammaį¹ na jānāti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā ābhisamācārikampi dhammaį¹ na jānātÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he doesnā€™t even know the supplementary regulations?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena ābhisamācārikopi dhammo jānitabbo. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should know even the supplementary regulations.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena nātikālena gāmo pavisitabbo nātidivā paį¹­ikkamitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t enter the village too early or return too late in the day.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto atikālena gāmaį¹ pavisati atidivā paį¹­ikkamati, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he does so, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā atikālena gāmaį¹ pavisati atidivā paį¹­ikkamatÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he enters the village too early or returns too late in the day?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena nātikālena gāmo pavisitabbo, nātidivā paį¹­ikkamitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t enter the village too early or return too late in the day.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena na purebhattaį¹ pacchābhattaį¹ kulesu cārittaį¹ āpajjitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t visit families before or after the meal.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto purebhattaį¹ pacchābhattaį¹ kulesu cārittaį¹ āpajjati, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he does so, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Ayaį¹ nÅ«nimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena viharato vikālacariyā bahulÄ«katā, tamenaį¹ saį¹…ghagatampi samudācaratÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜This wilderness venerable, staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, must be used to wandering about at the wrong time, since he behaves like this when heā€™s come to the Saį¹…gha.ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena na purebhattaį¹ pacchābhattaį¹ kulesu cārittaį¹ āpajjitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t visit families before or after the meal.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena anuddhatena bhavitabbaį¹ acapalena. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t be restless and fickle.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto uddhato hoti capalo, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he is, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Idaį¹ nÅ«nimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena viharato uddhaccaį¹ cāpalyaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹, tamenaį¹ saį¹…ghagatampi samudācaratÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜This wilderness venerable, staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, must be used to being restless and fickle, since he behaves like this when heā€™s come to the Saį¹…gha.ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena anuddhatena bhavitabbaį¹ acapalena. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t be restless and fickle.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena amukharena bhavitabbaį¹ avikiį¹‡į¹‡avācena. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t be scurrilous and loose-tongued.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto mukharo hoti vikiį¹‡į¹‡avāco, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he is, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā mukharo vikiį¹‡į¹‡avācoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s scurrilous and loose-tongued?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena amukharena bhavitabbaį¹ avikiį¹‡į¹‡avācena. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha shouldnā€™t be scurrilous and loose-tongued.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena suvacena bhavitabbaį¹ kalyāį¹‡amittena. A wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should be easy to admonish, with good friends.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu saį¹…ghagato saį¹…ghe viharanto dubbaco hoti pāpamitto, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If heā€™s hard to admonish, with bad friends, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā dubbaco pāpamittoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s hard to admonish, with bad friends?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā saį¹…ghagatena saį¹…ghe viharantena suvacena bhavitabbaį¹ kalyāį¹‡amittena. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk who has come to stay in the Saį¹…gha should be easy to admonish, with good friends.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā indriyesu guttadvārena bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should guard the sense doors.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu indriyesu aguttadvāro hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā indriyesu aguttadvāroā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he doesnā€™t guard the sense doors?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā indriyesu guttadvārena bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should guard the sense doors.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā bhojane mattaƱƱunā bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should eat in moderation.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu bhojane amattaĆ±Ć±Å« hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā bhojane amattaĆ±Ć±Å«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he eats too much?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā bhojane mattaƱƱunā bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should eat in moderation.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā jāgariyaį¹ anuyuttena bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should be committed to wakefulness.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu jāgariyaį¹ ananuyutto hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he isnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā jāgariyaį¹ ananuyuttoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s not committed to wakefulness?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā jāgariyaį¹ anuyuttena bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should be committed to wakefulness.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā āraddhavÄ«riyena bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should be energetic.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu kusÄ«to hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he isnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā kusÄ«toā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s not energetic?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā āraddhavÄ«riyena bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should be energetic.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā upaį¹­į¹­hitassatinā bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should be mindful.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu muį¹­į¹­hassatÄ« hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he isnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā muį¹­į¹­hassatÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s not mindful?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā upaį¹­į¹­hitassatinā bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should be mindful.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā samāhitena bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should have immersion.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu asamāhito hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he doesnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā asamāhitoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he doesnā€™t have immersion?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā samāhitena bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should have immersion.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā paƱƱavatā bhavitabbaį¹. A wilderness monk should be wise.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu duppaƱƱo hoti, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he isnā€™t, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā duppaƱƱoā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since heā€™s not wise?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā paƱƱavatā bhavitabbaį¹. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should be wise.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā abhidhamme abhivinaye yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. A wilderness monk should make an effort in regards to the teaching and training.

Santāvuso, āraƱƱikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ abhidhamme abhivinaye paƱhaį¹ pucchitāro. There are those who will question a wilderness monk about the teaching and training.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu abhidhamme abhivinaye paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyati, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he is stumped, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā abhidhamme abhivinaye paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyatÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he is stumped by a question about the teaching and training?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā abhidhamme abhivinaye yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should make an effort to learn the teaching and training.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā tattha yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. A wilderness monk should practice meditation to realize the peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending form.

Santāvuso, āraƱƱikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā tattha paƱhaį¹ pucchitāro. There are those who will question a wilderness monk about the formless liberations.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā tattha paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyati, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he is stumped, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā tattha paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyatÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he is stumped by a question about the formless liberations?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā ye te santā vimokkhā atikkamma rÅ«pe āruppā tattha yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should practice meditation to realize the peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending form.

ĀraƱƱikenāvuso, bhikkhunā uttari manussadhamme yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo. A wilderness monk should practice meditation to realize the superhuman state.

Santāvuso, āraƱƱikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ uttari manussadhamme paƱhaį¹ pucchitāro. There are those who will question a wilderness monk about the superhuman state.

Sace, āvuso, āraƱƱiko bhikkhu uttari manussadhamme paƱhaį¹ puį¹­į¹­ho na sampāyati, tassa bhavanti vattāro. If he is stumped, thereā€™ll be some who say:

ā€˜Kiį¹ panimassāyasmato āraƱƱikassa ekassāraƱƱe serivihārena yo ayamāyasmā yassatthāya pabbajito tamatthaį¹ na jānātÄ«ā€™tiā€”ā€˜Whatā€™s the point of this wilderness venerableā€™s staying alone and autonomous in the wilderness, since he doesnā€™t know the goal for which he went forth?ā€™

tassa bhavanti vattāro.

Tasmā āraƱƱikena bhikkhunā uttari manussadhamme yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why a wilderness monk should practice meditation to realize the superhuman state.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When Venerable Sāriputta said this, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to him,

ā€œÄraƱƱikeneva nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā ime dhammā samādāya vattitabbā udāhu gāmantavihārināpÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, should these things be undertaken and followed only by wilderness monks, or by those who live within a village as well?ā€

ā€œÄ€raƱƱikenāpi kho, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhunā ime dhammā samādāya vattitabbā pageva gāmantavihārināā€ti. ā€œReverend Moggallāna, these things should be undertaken and followed by wilderness monks, and still more by those who live within a village.ā€
